NBA Team Releases LeBron James' Former Teammate After Draft Night

NBA Team Releases LeBron James' Former Teammate After Draft Night originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 NBA Draft is in the books, and a new wave of talent is ready to leave its mark. While draft night brought fresh excitement and hope for franchises, it also marked the beginning of tough roster decisions as teams prepare for the NBA Summer League. Advertisement Ahead of Summer League action, front offices are actively reshaping their rosters to make room for newly drafted talent. That often means parting ways with players who no longer fit the team's long-term direction or developmental goals. One such move involved a former teammate of LeBron James. According to NBA insider Michael Scotto, "the Brooklyn Nets have waived Maxwell Lewis.' Lewis, 22, is a Las Vegas native who played college basketball at Pepperdine. He was selected in the second round of the 2023 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets, then traded to the Lakers on draft night. During his rookie season with Los Angeles, Lewis appeared in 34 games but averaged just three minutes per contest. He played seven more games in the 2024-25 season before being included in the trade that sent D'Angelo Russell to Brooklyn. In total, Lewis played 21 games for Brooklyn, including one start, and averaged 5.3 points per game. Advertisement The Nets were busy on draft night, making five first-round selections. They began by picking Egor Demin, a 6-foot-9 guard from Russia who played at BYU. They followed with Nolan Traore from France, Drake Powell from North Carolina, Ben Saraf from Israel and Danny Wolf from Michigan. After the draft, Nets general manager Sean Marks shared his thoughts with ESPN. 'I'm thrilled with the group we got tonight,' Marks said. 'We've got some guys who play the right way, move the ball the right way and have some untapped skills there.' Brooklyn's Summer League campaign begins July 10 in Las Vegas. Maxwell Lewis becomes Nets roster casualty with historic draft class coming in

The Nets waived forward Maxwell Lewis on Friday, clearing up roster space after taking the biggest crop of first-round draft picks in NBA history. Lewis had initially arrived in the Dec. 29 trade that had sent Dorian Finney-Smith to the Lakers, but he immediately fractured his left tibia making a 3-pointer seconds into his New Year's Day debut. The injury stunted his opportunity to show what he could do, in the end averaging 5.3 points in 14.2 minutes over just 21 appearances. The Nets took five players in the first round of Wednesday's NBA draft, a league record. Two days later, they waived Lewis to clear the deck. The schedule was released Friday, showing four games, though every team is guaranteed to play at least five tilts. 4 Egor Demin of the Brooklyn Nets speaks to the media after being drafted eighth overall during the 2025 NBA Draft at Barclays Center on June 25, 2025, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. Late-season signee Drew Timme will play in the summer league per CBS Sports, while 2023 first-round pick Dariq Whitehead — who has seen his first two years slowed by injuries — presumably should be in the mix as well, along with several undrafted prospects. Six-foot-11 Alabama forward Grant Nelson and 6-foot-5 Oregon wing TJ Bamba will both join the Nets for the summer league. The former is in the mix for a two-way contract, per HoopsHype, while the latter is a Bronx native who was on the Big Ten All-Defensive team. 4 Maxwell Lewis was waived by the Brooklyn Nets on Friday. Getty Images Sunday is the deadline for Brooklyn to pick up team options on Timme, Keon Johnson, Tyrese Martin and Jalen Wilson, as well as make qualifying offers to Cam Thomas, Day'Ron Sharpe and Ziaire Williams in order to make them restricted free agents. Nets' Maxwell Lewis, Dariq Whitehead available Wednesday vs. 76ers

The Brooklyn Nets (19-34) have been playing well as of late as they have won five of their past six games, including their most recent win over the Charlotte Hornets. As Brooklyn continues their season with one game left before the All-Star break, they will be getting back one of their young players that has missed significant time over the past month. The Nets announced on Tuesday that forward Maxwell Lewis, who came to Brooklyn in the trade that sent Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton to the Los Angeles Lakers, is available for Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Lewis has missed the past 20 games for Brooklyn with a left tibia fracture and after being seen at practice on Sunday, it looks like he's ready to take the floor with the rest of his teammates. It's also notable that guard Dariq Whitehead, the 22nd overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, is also available Wednesday against the 76ers after spending the majority of this season with Brooklyn's G League team, the Long Island Nets. Whitehead is coming one of his most impressive performances on Tuesday against the Windy City Bulls in which he dropped 20 points and four rebounds. The negative part of the Nets' injury report is that center Nic Claxton is questionable Wednesday against Philadelphia due to a right ankle sprain. Claxton played in Monday's 97-89 win over the Hornets, but there wasn't any indication that he was dealing with an ankle injury of some sort, but he did play just 24 minutes in the contest when he is averaging 26.5 minutes per game this season. If Claxton is unable to play Wednesday against the 76ers, that would most likely mean that Day'Ron Sharpe, Claxton's backup, will be thrust into the starting lineup and have to deal with whoever Philadelphia plays at center, assuming that it isn't Joel Embiid. Claxton has played in 46 of Brooklyn's 53 games this season so the team will have to figure out how to make up for his absence if he is unable to play. The Nets say that Nic Claxton is QUESTIONABLE for tomorrow's game against the 76ers due to a right ankle Whitehead, who was recalled from Long Island, is Lewis, who has missed the past 20 games with a left tibia fracture, is also AVAILABLE. — Sharif Phillips-Keaton (@SharifKeaton) February 11, 2025 This article originally appeared on Nets Wire: Nets' Maxwell Lewis, Dariq Whitehead available Wednesday vs. 76ers
