Nets waive F Maxwell Lewis prior to June 29 $2.2 million deadline

The Brooklyn Nets came away from the 2025 NBA Draft with five new players being added to the team ahead of the 2025-26 season in which the Nets continue the rebuild. Brooklyn will be heading into the 2025 Las Vegas Summer League with the anticipation of seeing all of the new rookies, but it looks like the roster is already being affected by the many additions. The Nets announced on Friday that they have waived forward Maxwell Lewis, two days before the team had to decide whether to keep Lewis on the roster given that his $2.2 million salary would become guaranteed on that date. June 29 is a pivotal date for Brooklyn since that is when they have to decide whether to extend qualifying offers to their four restricted free-agents and pick up the team options on four other players. Advertisement Lewis, 22, came to the Nets in December as part of a trade that sent forward Dorian Finney-Smith and guard Shake Milton to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Lewis, guard D'Angelo Russell, and three second-round picks, all from the Lakers. Lewis went on to average 5.3 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while shooting 42.2% from the floor and 38.0% from three-point land. By waiving Lewis, the Nets will incur a $100,000 dead money cap hit or in other words, 0.1% of the salary cap for the 2025-26 season as a result of the move. As Nets Wire previously mentioned, Brooklyn was running into a roster crunch given that they technically had 23 players prior to Lewis being waived, including the five incoming rookies, restricted free-agents, and forward Terance Mann, who was acquired from the Atlanta Hawks in a multi-team trade earlier this week. Now, the Nets have 22 players that are on the roster in some capacity so the numbers crunch is still an issue, but they still have some time to address that. Lewis being waived is the beginning of an offseason in which Brooklyn will have to make some tough decisions, especially since maximizing cap space is still presumably part of the equation for the rebuilding franchise. Report: Nets extend $5.99 million QO to Cam Thomas to make him RFA

The Brooklyn Nets had to make some tough decisions to begin the offseason as they had to decide which players they would be relying on from the 2025 NBA Draft. Brooklyn already made some decisions that will affect the rest of the roster by waiving forward Maxwell Lewis, and they continued to make some key choices with an important deadline coming up. HoopsHype NBA insider Michael Scotto reported on Sunday that the Nets extended a $5.99 million qualifying offer to guard Cam Thomas, officially making a restricted free-agent heading into the 2025 offseason. Now that Thomas is a restricted free-agent, Brooklyn has the right to match any offer sheet that any other team offers him in free-agency as teams might seek his scoring talents for next season. Advertisement Thomas, 23, is coming off a 2024-25 season in which he averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land. However, Thomas heads into free-agency having played just 25 games last season as he dealt with multiple bouts of a left hamstring strain, the last of which ended his season in March. There have been various reports concerning Thomas and how much money he is expected to command in free-agency during a summer in which most NBA teams don't have much money to spend on free-agents. Per NetsDaily, Thomas is expected to command around $25 million per season in free-agency, whether that comes from the Nets or from another team via an offer sheet. Thomas should command plenty of attention in free-agency as he is regarded as one of the better free-agents on the market while having a scoring talent that every team can use on the floor. The Nets would be able to offer Thomas a contract around $25 million per year and if Brooklyn feels as committed to Thomas as he does to them, he should have a new deal coming sometime soon. NBA Team Releases LeBron James' Former Teammate After Draft Night

NBA Team Releases LeBron James' Former Teammate After Draft Night originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 NBA Draft is in the books, and a new wave of talent is ready to leave its mark. While draft night brought fresh excitement and hope for franchises, it also marked the beginning of tough roster decisions as teams prepare for the NBA Summer League. Advertisement Ahead of Summer League action, front offices are actively reshaping their rosters to make room for newly drafted talent. That often means parting ways with players who no longer fit the team's long-term direction or developmental goals. One such move involved a former teammate of LeBron James. According to NBA insider Michael Scotto, "the Brooklyn Nets have waived Maxwell Lewis.' Lewis, 22, is a Las Vegas native who played college basketball at Pepperdine. He was selected in the second round of the 2023 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets, then traded to the Lakers on draft night. During his rookie season with Los Angeles, Lewis appeared in 34 games but averaged just three minutes per contest. He played seven more games in the 2024-25 season before being included in the trade that sent D'Angelo Russell to Brooklyn. In total, Lewis played 21 games for Brooklyn, including one start, and averaged 5.3 points per game. Advertisement The Nets were busy on draft night, making five first-round selections. They began by picking Egor Demin, a 6-foot-9 guard from Russia who played at BYU. They followed with Nolan Traore from France, Drake Powell from North Carolina, Ben Saraf from Israel and Danny Wolf from Michigan. After the draft, Nets general manager Sean Marks shared his thoughts with ESPN. 'I'm thrilled with the group we got tonight,' Marks said. 'We've got some guys who play the right way, move the ball the right way and have some untapped skills there.' Brooklyn's Summer League campaign begins July 10 in Las Vegas.
