Charles Melton and Stephanie Hsu to Lead Voice Cast of Surf-Themed Animated Film ‘In Waves' From Silex, Anonymous Content, Charades (EXCLUSIVE)

Fast-rising stars Charles Melton ('May December,' 'Warfare') and Stephanie Hsu ('Everything Everywhere All At Once,' 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel') are set to headline the voice cast of 'In Waves,' the California surf-themed animated feature adapted from illustrator AJ Dungo's celebrated graphic memoir. Described as an 'unconditional first love story, and tale of loss and memories,' the film — produced by Silex Films, Charades and Anonymous Content — is directed Phuong Mai Nguyen, a former student of French animation schools Gobelins and La Poudrière. Phuong helmed episodes of the Silex-produced animated series 'Brazen' and was Oscar-shortlisted for her short 'My Home.' More from Variety ADVERTISEMENT Charades and Anonymous Content will show a promo-reel to buyers at the upcoming Cannes market. 'In Waves' — which has just been announced as one of five titles at the Annecy Animation Showcase — follows AJ, a shy teenager in Los Angeles, who falls deeply in love with Kristen, a vibrant surfer. Their shared passion for the ocean becomes a source of strength as they face the devastating impact of illness together. The film blends personal narrative with surf history, reflecting the emotional depth of Dungo's original work. The graphic novel has received international acclaim, including the BD Fnac-France Inter Award (2020, France), the Prix des Libraires du Québec (2020, Canada), and the American Library Association Alex Award (2020, USA). It was also an official selection at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in France. 'In Waves' is also co-produced by France 3 Cinéma and Belgium's Panique! It is written by Fanny Burdino and Samuel Doux, screenwriters of movies by Joachim Lafosse ('After Love') and Laurent Cantet ('Arthur Rambo') and Warner Bros. Discovery's soon-to-release first French original miniseries, 'The Mythomaniac Of The Bataclan,' directed by Just Philippot. The film marks Melton's first voice role on an animated feature. Hsu, meanwhile, was among the voice cast of 'The Wild Robot.' The two will lead the English voice cast of 'In Waves.' A French version will be led by Lyna Khoudri ('The French Dispatch') and Rio Vega ('Deerskin') ADVERTISEMENT Melton is represented by CAA, 111 Media, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Hsu is represented by CAA and Hanson Jacobson. Best of Variety Sign up for Variety's Newsletter. For the latest news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Julianne Moore on her children's book being restricted at DOD schools: ‘It is a great shock'

Actor Julianne Moore says she is surprised that schools overseen by the Department of Defense Education Activity have apparently decided to pull her children's book 'Freckleface Strawberry' amid an ordered review of educational content. 'It is a great shock for me to learn that my first book, 'Freckleface Strawberry,' has been banned by the Trump Administration from schools run by the Department of Defense,' Moore wrote Sunday in a post on Instagram. Amid the review, the department has also reportedly pulled at least two other children's books: Kathleen Krull's biography of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 'No Truth Without Ruth,' and Amy Ellis Nutt's 'Becoming Nicole.' The DOD Education Activity notified parents with children in these schools that these books were pulled due to a review focusing on materials related to gender and equity ideologies, according to The Guardian. A spokesperson for DOD Education Activity told The Hill the department is reviewing its current policies and instructional resources in light of recent executive orders from President Trump and Department of Defense guidance. 'At this time, we are conducting a review — no materials have been permanently removed from our school libraries pending completion of the review. During this period, materials under review will have access limited to professional staff,' according to a statement from the department. Moore wrote in her Instagram post that 'Freckleface Strawberry' is a semi-autobiographical story about a 7-year-old girl who does not like her freckles but later accepts them when she realizes that she is different 'just like everybody else.' 'It is a book I wrote for my children and for other kids to remind them that we all struggle, but are united by our humanity and our community,' the 'May December' star added. 'I can't help but wonder what is so controversial about this picture book that caused it to be banned by the US Government,' Moore said. 'I am truly saddened and never thought I would see this in a country where freedom of speech and expression is a constitutional right.' Last month, the Department of Education dismissed 11 complaints regarding book bans that it had received during the Biden administration. The department announced at the time it was ending former President Biden's 'book ban hoax,' saying the complaints about book removals were 'meritless' and based 'upon a dubious legal theory.' Todd Haynes Says How Trump's Presidency Will Affect Movie Business Is a ‘Real Question Hanging Over All American Filmmakers': ‘We're in a Particular Crisis Right Now'

Todd Haynes, who is serving as Berlin Film Festival jury president, spoke out against Donald Trump's administration as the fest kicked off on Thursday. When asked his thoughts on Trump's second term at the jury press conference, the 'May December' director said bluntly: 'We're in a state of particular crisis right now in the United States.' I think that's been part of the strategy, to create a sense of destabilization and shock among the people. So how we proceed through coalescing different forms of resistance are still in the works and are still being figured out among Democrats. I have no doubt there will be many people who did in fact vote for this president who will be quickly disillusioned by promises he made about economic stability in the U.S.' Haynes also said that the how Trump's return 'will affect filming is a real question hanging over all American filmmakers.' 'I think it's a question that extends beyond the world of filmmaking, it's how do you protect your own integrity and point of view and speak out against these issues … Always with filmmaking in particular, the filmmaking question is complicated,' he said. 'So it's about financiers who are willing to take a risk and …. it takes examples and positive outcomes to fortify these risks.' Haynes is joined on the jury by Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing, Moroccan filmmaker Nabil Ayouch ('Everybody Loves Touda'), German costume designer Bina Daigeler ('Tár'), Argentinian director Rodrigo Moreno ('The Delinquents'), film critic Amy Nicholson and actor-director Maria Schrader ('She Said'). The festival will open on Thursday night with the premiere of Tom Tykwer's new film, 'Das Licht' ('The Light'). The film marks Tykwer's return to the big screen after seven years and four seasons as writer and director of the hit series 'Babylon Berlin.' Berlin Film Festival runs through Feb. 23.
