Mayfield Village to hold public meeting on proposed charter changes
Mayfield Village has announced that its Charter Review Commission, which was appointed by Mayor Brenda Bodnar and City Council in January, will present six different possible amendments to voters in the upcoming election. Although village officials said that they don't legally need to provide the public with a chance to review the proposals before they hit the Nov. 4 ballot, they will be having a public hearing on several charter amendments at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Mayfield Village Civic Center, 6622 Wilson Mills Road. One change would be to allow the village council to meet online instead of in person. Law Director Diane Calta said that if the amendment did get approved by voters, that the council itself would iron out the details, and set the requirements that would determine if meetings were held online or not. Calta said that council would also be on the hook for making sure that online meetings were understandable for those that tune in, as ensuring the public can attend and participate would still be a requirement even if the meeting was held virtually. 'That would be part of Village Council discussion because in order to implement virtual meetings you need to be able to have the communication accessible. So, there could be monetary expenditures that have to made to implement the technology to have all that.' Another proposed amendment in the charter, according to a written explanation posted to the Voice of the Village by Calta, would remove the requirement to form a committee that consists of at least five registered electors in any incidences that involves 'nominate(ing) candidates to run for office, propose ordinances through initiatives, repeal ordinances through referendums or bring a recall election.' This requirement is onerous and outdated and is not mentioned in Article VI which governs nominating petitions, creating an ambiguity.' wrote Calta.
