Shivambu confirms Afrika Mayibuye is eyeing 2026 local government elections

JOHANNESBURG - A year since his departure from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), joining another organisation and then getting dumped, Floyd Shivambu has confirmed his new political home, Afrika Mayibuye, has set its eyes on the 2026 local government elections. He's told supporters in Gauteng this weekend that they're in the process of registering the consultative process. News of wanting to contest elections comes after the MK Party officially expelled him from the organisation, led by former president Jacob Zuma. In a move that comes as a surprise to no one, Shivambu has confirmed it's rolling the dice, entering the fray, and asking for the backing of ordinary South Africans at the polls. 'We are already registering the Afrika Mayibuye movement as a political party, which will contest elections in 2026, 2029, and moving forward.' The decision to contest comes even before Mayibuye's consultation process has been finalised. Shivambu said they still have to go to KwaZulu-Natal – the epicentre of his last political home , the MK Party. 'The people of KwaZulu-Natal have been saying to us please come to KwaZulu-Natal. We almost made a mistake last year; we want to correct that mistake.' Shivambu, in the last 12 months, has donned at least three different political colours, but insists his current one will have a lasting impact on the country.

Shivumbu says he's accepted his termination from MK Party, won't appeal decision

JOHANNESBURG - Former uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party secretary-general, Floyd Shivambu, said that he has accepted his termination from the party and won't be appealing the decision. At a media briefing on Friday, the MK Party announced it had expelled Shivambu, saying that the former secretary-general's actions and public statements were at odds with the organisation's constitution. After being demoted as secretary-general in June, Shivambu started his own political organisation and called the MK Party a family affair, saying he no longer had faith in it to bring about the liberation of black people in the country. At the same time, MK Party leader, Jacob Zuma, said the organisation should also look forward and not to the past. Speaking on the constant changes to the party's leadership, Zuma said it was a sign that the organisation did not tolerate ill-discipline. "Some of you are very lucky because I would have fired more people, but I was advised by the leaders behind me to calm down and they will fix the problems," said Zuma. Bongani Mncwango has been announced as the MK Party's secretary-general, becoming the seventh different person to occupy the position since the party was formed less than two years ago in December 2023.

Floyd Shivambu now slams MK Party as Jacob Zuma 'family stokvel'

Former MK Party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu has denounced the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party under Jacob Zuma as a 'family stokvel,' accusing its leadership of looting party coffers for personal gain. Shivambu, who is now the national convenor of the Mayibuye Consultative Process, had previously describing joining the MK Party as the best decision ever. After allegations he plotted against Zuma, Shivambu refused to resign and launched the Mayibuye consultation process to engage traditional and civic leaders across South Africa. He was speaking in Mpumalanga this weekend when he denounced the MK Party, the ANC and the EFF.

MK Party Gauteng hopes sanity will prevail for members who defected to Shivambu's Mayibuye Consultation

JOHANNESBURG - The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party in Gauteng says it hopes sanity will soon prevail for members who left it to join Floyd Shivambu's Mayibuye Consultation process. Last month, Shivambu announced the national leadership of his new political organisation, which is dominated by former MK Party members, particularly from Gauteng. MK Gauteng spokesperson Abel Tau said the defection of members from the organisation has been a setback in uniting black political leaders and parties under one umbrella. 'We still hope that sanity will prevail that people will understand that MK is their home but MK is not just a political home but it is a weapon but which can finally get a two-thirds majority, go into parliament and legislate in a manner that can respond to the socio-economic needs of our people and finally liberate our people and make them players in the economy of their country.'
