Big Mama leads Atletico to victory
LIMPOPO – Giyani Atletico's jersey number nine, affectionately known as 'Big Mama' by her teammates, played a pivotal role in leading the team to a dominant 5–0 victory over Ward 12's New Castle FC during a Mayor's Cup clash held on the side pitch of Giyani Stadium on Saturday. Just minutes after kick-off, Big Mama wasted no time making her presence felt on the field. With remarkable speed and precision, she broke through New Castle's shaky defence and netted the opening goal, putting Atletico ahead early in the match. New Castle's players appeared stunned and struggled to regain their composure. Before they could reorganise or settle into the game, Big Mama struck again. Capitalising on a defensive error, she fired in a second goal, further widening the gap. By the time the referee blew the whistle for half-time, Atletico was already leading 3–0. In the second half, Atletico maintained their dominance, controlling possession and keeping constant pressure on New Castle's backline. Big Mama remained central to the action, although she narrowly missed several attempts that went just wide or were blocked at the goal line; her relentless presence continued to unsettle the opposition. She also created multiple scoring opportunities for her teammates through clever passes and well-timed runs. It wasn't long before Atletico scored again, netting their fourth goal and tightening their grip on the match. To put the final nail in New Castle's coffin, Big Mama squared a ball into the box that resulted in a penalty for Atletico. One of her teammates stepped up confidently and converted the spot kick, bringing the score to a commanding 5–0. The goal sealed an already emphatic performance, and the match ended with Atletico walking away victorious. Meanwhile, as the tournament draws closer to semi semi-finals, the spotlight remained on Big Mama, also affectionately called 'Biggie' by her teammates. Her consistent goal-scoring prowess and overall contribution to the team's success have not gone unnoticed in the past. She was once named the top goal scorer of the tournament in the 2023 Mayor's Cup, a title that reflects her dedication, talent, and leadership. Judging by her current form, there is a strong possibility she could clinch the top scorer award again this year. Even more exciting is that, unlike in previous years when there were no formal prizes for individual achievements, the municipality has now allocated funds to reward outstanding players in various categories.

Giyani Stadium pitch upgrade targets PSL return
LIMPOPO – The Greater Giyani Municipality is embarking on a major renovation project to upgrade the Giyani Stadium pitch to meet Premier Soccer League (PSL) standards, a move that could see top-tier football return to the town. Municipal manager Vusi Duncan Khoza revealed the plan during a recent event at the stadium, confirming that all current stadium bookings would be suspended to pave the way for the pitch upgrade. 'As you know, we recently had a meeting with PSL officials regarding the upgrading of our pitch. They were quite clear on what needs to be done for the stadium to host PSL matches again,' said Khoza. He highlighted that, while the Giyani Stadium has a legacy of hosting PSL fixtures, its current condition falls short of league requirements. 'The pitch needs to be upgraded to meet PSL standards. Today marks our last event here before we begin renovations,' he stated. According to Khoza, the municipality has taken proactive steps to ensure the success of the project. Officials visited the new Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane to benchmark against a facility that successfully meets PSL criteria. 'Through that benchmarking exercise, we got valuable guidance. We've already gone through a procurement process focused on the specifications required to meet PSL standards,' he explained. The upgrade is scheduled to begin in the coming week, with hopes that the pitch will be ready by the start of the upcoming PSL season. Meanwhile, PSL representatives are expected to return for an inspection to verify compliance. Khoza also noted that much of the infrastructure within the stadium, such as change rooms and ablution facilities, has already been improved in previous phases. The pitch upgrade marks the beginning of phase one of the current project, while phase two will focus on the running track and aesthetic improvements like painting the grandstand. 'Residents have raised concerns about the lack of a proper running track, and we've listened. And that will be part of the next phase,' he added. When asked about the implications for the upcoming Mayor's Cup tournament, Khoza confirmed that alternative venues would be considered. 'We'll look at options such as the Homu Stadium or other outer pitches here. It will depend on what the community wants. Maybe by the final, the pitch could be partially ready, but that remains to be seen,' said Khoza. He concluded by affirming the municipality's commitment to responding to community calls for PSL action in Giyani. 'We have heard the cries of the people. There's a hunger to see PSL matches played here again—and we're doing something about it,' he said. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
