Iraq and Syria to reopen Al-Qaim border crossing next week

Shafaq News/ Iraq and Syria will reopen the Al-Qaim–Al-Bukamal border crossing to travelers and commercial traffic next Monday, officials from both countries confirmed on Thursday. Turki Al-Mahlawi, the district commissioner of Al-Qaim in Iraq's Al-Anbar Province, told Shafaq News that the crossing will resume normal operations at the beginning of next week following a bilateral agreement. The reopening does not pose any security threat to Al-Anbar or Iraq, noting that the border is 'well-secured and jointly managed,' he added. Additionally, Syria's General Authority for Land and Maritime Border Crossings announced that the Al-Bukamal crossing will reopen on June 14 for both travelers and freight trucks. — الهيئة العامة للمنافذ البرية والبحرية السورية (@Syrianborders) June 12, 2025 Mazen Alloush, the Authority's Director of Public Relations, told Shafaq News that the reopening 'revives the eastern economic artery of the trade route between Syria and Iraq and strengthens overland connectivity along the Damascus–Bukamal–Qaim–Baghdad corridor, reducing costs and accelerating the flow of goods.' He added that the move 'will help restore economic activity in Syria's Deir ez-Zor province and Iraq's Al-Anbar, where local populations depend heavily on the exchange of agricultural and livestock products.' According to Alloush, the crossing 'serves as a cornerstone for reconstruction programs and the systematic supply of raw materials needed for Syrian industry, while also creating opportunities for exporting national products to Iraqi markets.' Separately, Syria's Ministry of Economy and Industry said the reopening of the Al-Bukamal crossing 'is more than just the passage of trucks—it marks the beginning of a new economic vision between Syria and Iraq, one built on production and integration rather than rentier exchange and consumption.' A spokesperson from the Ministry indicated to Shafaq News that the Ministry is developing a practical investment roadmap based on real projects, noting that the crossing would serve as a vital route for the flow of raw materials and Syrian goods into Iraqi and Gulf markets. The crossing has remained closed since December 2024 due to security concerns stemming from clashes in the area and the withdrawal of Syrian government forces.

Tartous Port Receives the Largest Palm Oil Shipment

SANA 11 Jun 2025, 19:26 GMT+10 Tartous, SANA - A ship carrying 40,000 tons of palm oil has arrived at Tartous Port as the largest shipment of its kind to arrive at this port since the fall of the former regime. Mazen Alloush, Director of Public Relations at the General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, said in a statement that "the ship was carrying a shipment of 40,000 tons of crude palm oil, 23,000 tons of which were allocated for the Syrian Market, and were unloaded at the Port of Tartous within a record time." The ship, which arrived from Malaysia and Indonesia, continued its journey to the port of Izmit, Turkey, to unload the remaining 13,000 tons, he clarified. Alloush added that since the reactivation of the Port, it has received hundreds of commercial vessels carrying various cargoes, including foodstuffs, industrial raw materials, and production supplies. "This reflects the port's recovery and the gradual restoration of its capacity to support national commercial and economic activity," Alloush added. Reem/Abdul / Fedaa

425,000 Syrians return since Al-Assad's fall

Shafaq News/ More than 425,000 Syrians have returned to neighboring countries since the fall of the former regime, the Director of Public Relations at the Syrian General Authority for Land and Sea Border Crossings, Mazen Alloush, confirmed on Monday. Alloush stated that from December 8, 2024, to June 8, 2025, Syrian border crossings recorded the return of these citizens as part of the voluntary repatriation process, noting that over 250,000 of them are from Turkiye, with significant numbers also coming from Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. He added that border crossings have also logged the arrival of tens of thousands of expatriates from Europe, the Gulf, and various other countries, either for visits or permanent resettlement in Syria. Alloush reported that since the reopening of the Arida border crossing with Lebanon last Tuesday, more than 20,000 travelers have crossed in both directions. Revealing that work is currently underway to establish a permanent commercial route between Syria and Lebanon through the Arida crossing after the Eid al-Adha holiday, he clarified that 'infrastructure upgrades and full rehabilitation of service facilities at the crossing are also ongoing.' Shafaq News/ Syria has deployed military reinforcements to the eastern city of al-Bukamal near the Iraqi border, Syrian state media reported on Friday. Iraq and Syria to reopen Al-Bukamal crossing

Shafaq News/ Syria and Iraq have agreed to reopen the Al-Bukamal–Al-Qaim border crossing after a four-month closure, a Syrian official said on Tuesday. Mazen Alloush, Director of Public Relations at Syria's General Authority for Land and Sea Ports, revealed to Shafaq News that the Syrian Foreign Ministry reached an agreement with its Iraqi counterpart to resume trade activities through the crossing. He did not specify a precise date for the full reopening, but logistics and security arrangements are reportedly underway. The crossing was shut in December 2024 amid armed clashes in the border region and the subsequent withdrawal of Syrian government forces. Since then, it had remained partially operational, restricted to humanitarian aid and repatriation of displaced civilians, with over 10,000 Syrians returning via the crossing in recent months according to Syrian officials, although Iraq maintained a halt on commercial transit during that period. The Al-Bukamal–Al-Qaim corridor is also regarded as a strategic segment of the land route for the 'Axis of Resistance,' connecting Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon. The route has seen repeated airstrikes and security incidents, often attributed to tensions involving regional and international armed groups. Other Syrian border crossings remain restricted, however. The Al-Tanf crossing in southern Syria is controlled by Global Coalition forces, while in northeastern Syria, several crossings remain under control by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Humanitarian corridors coordinated with international organizations remain operational.
