Tornado batters Linton, one dead

Tornadoes battered the Midwest Friday night, with one leading to the death of a motorist in Linton. About 7 p.m. Greene County Dispatch was advised of a single vehicle with a tree collapsed atop it near 1461 N. 1500 W. in Linton. Deputies found the driver — Allison L. McCammon, 33, of Dugger — was deceased. There were three juvenile passengers in the vehicle, one of whom was listed in critical condition. "Our community was devastated by a tornado," said the sheriff's office news release, completed by Greene County Sheriff's Deputy Andrew Shelton. "This storm caused a long line of damage north of city Linton that stretched an estimated 15 miles. We were so thankful and encouraged to see the amount of people out helping their neighbors." City utility workers were out repairing damage within an hour after the storm had passed, the sheriff's department said. "While the worst is over, we still have several utility workers working diligently day and night to rebuild our infrastructure," the deputy continued. "Make sure to drive responsibly and do not clog the streets to survey the damage." National Weather Service Meteorologist Earl Breon said the tornado's highest winds were measured at 128 miles per hour, which would make it category EF-2 (winds between 111-135 mph). The EF-2 tornado traversed a path from 1 mile east of Indiana 54 just north of Linton, extending 14 miles to Switz City. By the time it reached just south of Worthington, it had been downgraded to an EF-1 tornado. McCammon's death appeared the only known fatality in Indiana due to the storm, though tornadoes also descended upon Bloomington. In Kentucky, 19 people died as a result of tornadoes. Linton Mayor John Preble offered a Facebook post with a message from Roger Axe, director of Linton Emergency Medical Services, announcing a multi-service center to offer assistance to those affected by the storm. The former National Guard Armory at 2000 W. Indiana 54 will be open for the next few days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. offering aid to those in need as well as receiving donations from the United Way, the Red Cross, Baptist Disaster Relief of Indiana and other generous neighbors. Those wishing to contribute are asked to provide essential personal items like clothing, pillows and blankets, hygiene supplies and other comfort items. No monetary contributions will be accepted, Axe said. On Tuesday, the Linton Assembly of God at 1503 A St. will provide mental health care from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for those traumatized by the storm. Axe surveyed the damage with members of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security early Saturday. About 60 homes were damaged, displacing 200-250 people, he said. They are being cared for now but will need other shelter in the near future. A turkey barn was also destroyed, with no remaining turkeys found in the area, Axe said, adding that he has not heard any reports of other damaged structures. Fairview Road, home to the town's cemetery, was hit pretty hard, he noted. The county's Emergency Management Agency had recently created a "Reverse 911" service — instead of people calling in for assistance, the county will phone those in localized areas to alert them about all manner of emergencies. Residents are encouraged to sign up at "This (tornado) underscores the need for people to sign up for Reverse 911," Axe said. Axe said the NWS said that tree damage was worse than usual because of the wet spring and the fact that trees have sprouted leaves that were caught in the wind's gusts. The NWS tracked and surveyed the results of Friday's storms in Monroe, Sullivan, Greene, Brown and Bartholomew Counties on Sunday. Those looking for direct assistance from the American Red Cross can call 1-800-RED CROSS.

1 woman dies, others injured when tornadoes pass through Greene, Monroe, Brown counties

A 33-year-old woman who was driving in her vehicle near Linton died Friday, May 16, when a tree fell on the car during a storm that produced an EF-2 tornado. Allison L. McCammon of Dugger died at the scene of the 7 p.m. incident near County Road 1500 West near Linton. Three children were taken to the hospital, one in critical condition, according to a Greene County Sheriff's Office news release. Dispatchers received a 911 call about a tree on top of a car. Deputies arrived and determined the driver of the 2006 Pontiac had died from injuries from the tree falling on the vehicle. In Monroe County no one died or was seriously hurt during the severe weather that spawned an EF-2 tornado and left swaths of damage in western and southern Monroe County May 16. 'We also are aware of five storm-related non-severe injuries and one 96-year-old male sustained a head injury and was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital via ambulance. His injury was reported as non-life threatening,' a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said. But there was widespread property damage and destruction. NWS confirms Bloomington, Monroe County area hit by EF2 tornado Friday. On Bloomington's south side, the Ranchero Motel at 4805 S. Old Ind. 37 and the Clear Creek Post Office at 4888 S. Rogers St. sustained significant damage. Residents were told mail to Clear Creek postal customers would be taken to the Smithville post office. Customers with postal boxes at Clear Creek can get mail at Smithville in the short term. On the west side of Monroe County, there was significant damage to barns at Bloomington's People & Animal Learning Services (PALS) headquarters on Elwen Road. None of their therapeutic riding horses were reported injured. Nearly 100 homes had tornado damage, many of them on the west side near Ind. 45 and the area around Stanford, Ison, Elwren and Harmony roads. Monroe County Highway Department crews worked throughout Friday night and throughout the weekend responding to assist with roadway hazards. West Ison Road between South Harmony and South Dunlap roads were impassable throughout the weekend. Anyone who needs housing resources or additional support should contact the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS. Brown County officials believe a tornado damaged some houses on the south side, likely from a tornado that began in Monroe County. Brown County Emergency Management Director Chad Jenkins said some people in the Horsemen's Campground at Brown County State Park suffered injuries that were not life threatening. Indiana University Health took the injured to the Bloomington hospital. One horse at the campground died and another was injured during the storms. Local middle school wrestler representing U.S. in international competition

SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One middle school wrestler in Sullivan has been dominating at the local, state, and national level. Now, he is ready to show his talents to the world. 8th grader at Sullivan Middle School, Spenser McCammon, will soon trade out his Sullivan purple for a red, white, and blue singlet, representing team USA at this year's Pan-American Wrestling Championships. 'I think it will be a pretty cool experience', Spenser McCammon said. 'Hopefully it's the first of many.' McCammon has been living and breathing wrestling since he was born, watching his father, Jade, compete on a national level. Jade said his son picked up the sport naturally. 'Having him in the room, just being around it, before he even competed in it, really gave him a leg up', Jade McCammon said. 'He was learning through osmosis, and he didn't even know it.' Spenser began competing himself as soon as he entered kindergarten, racking up wins with ease, so he strived for more. 'He said he wanted to win a state title, so we went and did that the next year', Jade McCammon said. 'I asked him what he wanted to do after that and he said he wanted to be a triple crown, which is all three state titles in one year, so he went on a four-year run where he did that every year. Then I asked him what he wanted to do after that and he said national titles, so he's done that. Now, present day, he's making a USA team.' Although the wins were coming in bunches, McCammon said his relationship with the sport hasn't been all positive. 'I've kind of fell in and out of love with it, sometimes you can go through a little adversity', Spenser McCammon said. 'I've really fallen back in love with it over these last 8-9 months.' In April, McCammon made a name for himself in Las Vegas at the U.S. Open, where nearly 80 wrestlers competed at the 15U level. He said that didn't waiver his confidence. 'I've always been in the running with some of the best guys in the country, just at any competition, so I knew I had a chance at being up there with them', Spenser McCammon said. Not long after, he got the news. 'We kind of had an idea, just from the system that they used, but I didn't really figure it out until two weeks ago', Spenser McCammon said. On May 22nd and 24th, McCammon will represent the United States in the 48-kilogram weight division at the Pan-American Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala. But of course, he isn't looking to stop there. 'It's going to be a goal from here on out, but next year I'll be eligible to make a world team, not just the Pan Ams', Spenser McCammon said. 'That will be the goal for the coming years.' The Pan-American Championships will be both a team and individual competition for Spenser. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Karma Automotive solidifies lineup with focus on energy range-extended powertrains

IRVINE, Calif. — In November 2023, Karma Automotive introduced the Kaveya coupe, a sleek electric vehicle pitched as the brand's halo model, launching an ambitious quest to go upmarket as an ultraluxury brand along with plans for a reimagined product portfolio. In the 16 months since, the Southern California company, which dates to 2014 when Chinese auto parts maker Wanxiang Group acquired some of the assets of bankrupt Fisker Automotive, has built out its future product lineup with three new nameplates, while shifting its focus from EVs to energy range-extended powertrains. And while the electric Kaveya remains in Karma's plans — the automaker said it'll launch in 2027 instead of 2026 — the brand is ready to execute, said Marques McCammon, the company's president. Want to keep up with the latest product planning news? Go to Automotive News' regularly updated database of product plans for brands that sell in the United States. Future Product Pipeline >5-year product timelines by brand > 'Everything right now is about what we do and what we deliver,' McCammon told a crowd inside the company's headquarters here on March 20. Karma, which McCammon likened to a grown-up startup during the presentation, took a pivotal step in late 2024 when it resumed output of the updated Revero sedan, an extended-range vehicle, at the automaker's Moreno Valley, Calif. Karma is now shipping about four Reveros a week out of the plant, McCammon told journalists, and should sell around 250 new vehicles in 2025. Pricing for the Revero sedan starts at $125,600 including shipping. Production of the Invictus, based on the Revero, is set to begin in the second quarter. The performance variant features carbon-fiber body panels, chassis upgrades and aluminum wheels. Pricing starts at $187,500 including shipping. The Gyesera sedan, first pitched as an EV, will now arrive as an extended-range vehicle, in the fourth quarter. It will be the Revero's successor. Karma said the change was in response to near-term market demand for EVs, which has softened. The Amaris coupe, which debuted March 20, will arrive in 2026. The Karma lineup will be rounded out by the Ivara crossover in 2028. Both the Amaris and the Ivara will have energy range-extended powertrains. The Ivara, which would be the automaker's first entry in the high-volume crossover segment, is critical to Karma's financial outlook. 'Our profitability is tied to Ivara, so 2028, 2029 is when we expect the business to be profitable,' McCammon said He said Karma's ownership remains committed to the brand and noted he meets with the board quarterly. McCammon said he's made it clear to the board that Karma will attract new capital and financial support from U.S. investors but declined to specify beyond equity markets. Sign up for the Automotive News Cars & Concepts newsletter, a weekly roundup of new and future product, design and auto show news. The Revero, with roots dating to the 2011 Fisker Karma, features a 28-kilowatt-hour battery pack along with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine mated to an onboard generator for a total of 536 hp and 550 pound-feet of torque. It has an electric-only range of 80 miles and a total range of 360 miles. While details about the Amaris' powertrain and range have not been released, Karma said the coupe will use a turbocharged, four-cylinder engine as a generator. Ed Kim, chief analyst at automotive research firm AutoPacific, said Karma has an opportunity to use its energy range-extended powertrain knowledge to gain an advantage. The powertrain was ignored for a long time, Kim said, but that's changing with high-profile use cases such as the Ram 1500 Ramcharger and Scout Motors' Harvester extended-range EV energy system. 'All of a sudden, it's super relevant and they [Karma] happen to have it,' Kim said of the energy range-extended setup. 'That is their powertrain.' But how well-heeled consumers will respond to Karma remains to be seen. And Karma's product rollout is taking place just as a trade war unfolds and threatens to drive new-vehicle prices higher. Karma could see some impact despite its vehicles being built in the U.S. Analysts believe some exotic brands will be able to absorb the impact of U.S. auto tariffs because their customers often aren't deterred by higher prices. McCammon said if Karma were to raise prices to mitigate the impact of any tariffs, customers would generally be less sensitive to such changes but acknowledged the brand doesn't enjoy the legacy or history of some competitors, which means Karma models need to be a relative value proposition. McCammon is positioning Karma to be an ultraluxury U.S. brand and said it's an opportunity to return to a time 'where American ingenuity reigned atop the most prominent brands in the world,' pointing to Packard, Duesenberg, Cord and Auburn. Karma customers, who McCammon said are typically entrepreneurs or business owners, are familiar with established ultraluxury and luxury brands. A Karma might be a third, fourth or fifth vehicle in someone's fleet, he noted, with many of those customers also owning a Mercedes-Benz, Bentley or Aston Martin. Karma has 36 dealerships globally, including in the U.S., Canada, Europe and the Middle East. The company's sales goal for 2025 — about 250 — is modest, but McCammon told Automotive News that the brand still intends to eventually reach annual deliveries of around 5,000. 'At that point, we're solid and profitable and we're able to innovate the way that we want,' McCammon said. 'For us to get to that stability is about half of that. We don't need to do a lot. We just need to do what we do well.' Have an opinion about this story? Tell us about it and we may publish it in print. Click here to submit a letter to the editor.
