Man traveled over 100 miles to WA hotel intending to sexually abuse kids, feds say

A man is accused of traveling over 100 miles from Oregon to Washington to sexually abuse two children, federal prosecutors said. But the children were fictitious, and Marc David McCool was greeted by law enforcement instead, according to prosecutors, who said McCool is now heading to prison. The 64-year-old, from Portland, was sentenced to four years behind bars in connection with traveling with the intent to engage in a sexual act with a minor, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Washington said in a May 20 news release. McClatchy News reached out to McCool's attorney for comment May 20 and was awaiting a response. During sentencing, McCool said 'his life has been forever changed' and he hopes to undergo treatment during his time behind bars, per the news release. In 2024, an undercover agent – posing as a 'taboo mommy' – posted an ad online as part of an operation to find people with 'a sexualized interest in children,' according to a plea agreement. Interested parties were asked to respond to a Kik account, the plea agreement said. McCool reached out and said he'd travel for sexual activity with the 'mom's' two young kids, the plea agreement said. 'Over more than six weeks of 'chats' via the Kik messenger app, McCool described his sexual interest in children,' prosecutors said. He eventually took a train to Seattle to meet the agent and 'kids' at a hotel 'for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity,' the plea agreement said. Agents arrested him there, according to the plea agreement, which said he had stuffed animals, condoms, baby oil and rope with him. McClatchy News couldn't immediately reach MediaLab, which owns Kik, on May 20 for comment. McCool's prison time is to be followed by 15 years of supervised release, prosecutors said. Suspect arrested in US Homeland Security Secretary Noem's purse theft

WASHINGTON, April 28, (AP): A suspect has been arrested in connection with the theft last week of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem 's purse as she ate at a Washington, DC, restaurant, officials said Sunday. Noem's purse was nabbed on Easter Sunday and reportedly contained about $3,000 in cash, her keys, driver's license, passport and Homeland Security badge. The Homeland Security Department said Noem had cash in her purse to pay for gifts, dinner and other activities for her family on Easter. A suspect was taken into custody without incident in Washington after an investigation by the US Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department, according to Secret Service Washington Field Office Special Agent in Charge Matt McCool. The suspect was arrested Saturday, the police department said. Interim District of Columbia US Attorney Ed Martin told NBC News the suspect was in the country illegally. In a prepared statement, McCool called the suspect a "serial offender" and said there was no evidence Noem was targeted because of her position. "There is no indication it was because of that. It was frankly, it was a nice looking purse,' Martin told NBC News. McCool said the investigation revealed evidence of potential device and credit card fraud. The Metropolitan Police Department said the suspect was connected to two other purse thefts in Washington restaurants earlier this month through video evidence. The suspect was charged with robbery for the other incidents. The Secret Service is investigating the Noem theft and will present its findings in federal court. There was no indication of criminal charges being filed against the suspect as of Sunday. The Secret Service referred questions to the US Attorney's office, which did not respond to emails seeking more information. Noem thanked law enforcement agencies "for finding and arresting the criminal who stole my bag on Easter Sunday as I shared a meal with my family.' "This individual is a career criminal who has been in our country illegally for years," Noem said in a prepared statement. DHS did not immediately respond to an email requesting further detail on the suspect's immigration status. Martin told NBC another suspect was being sought.

Suspect Arrested for Allegedly Stealing DHS Secretary Noem's Purse

A suspect has been arrested in connection with the theft of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's purse while she was dining out on Easter Sunday, and officials say he's in the country illegally. Noem lost $3,000 in cash, her keys, driver's license, passport, and Homeland Security badge a week ago on April 20. 'This individual is a career criminal who has been in our country illegally for years,' Noem told NTD in an emailed statement. 'Unfortunately, so many families in this country have been made victims by crime, and that's why President Trump is working every single day to make America safe and get these criminal aliens off of our streets.' Secret Service Washington field office special agent in charge Matt McCool said an investigation by the Secret Service and the Metropolitan Police Department led to a suspect being taken into custody on April 26 in Washington. Charges are yet to be filed. The name of the suspect who allegedly stole Noem's purse has yet to be disclosed. McCool called the suspect a 'serial offender' who likely did not know about Noem's position at the time of the crime. 'Thank you to Secret Service and ICE and our law enforcement partners for finding and arresting the criminal who stole my bag on Easter Sunday as I shared a meal with my family at a Washington, D.C., restaurant,' Noem added in the statement. Related Stories 4/9/2025 4/9/2025 The cash in Noem's purse was meant to pay for her children and grandchildren's Easter gifts, dinner, and other activities, according to Homeland Security. McCool added that there is also evidence of potential device and credit card fraud. The Metropolitan Police Department obtained video evidence that shows the suspect is likely linked to two other incidents of purse snatching in Washington restaurants during the month of April, and the suspect was charged for those thefts. The Secret Service is expected to present its findings to federal court upon completing the investigation into Noem's purse theft. U.S. Attorney Ed Martin's office did not respond to requests for comment by press time. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Suspect arrested in theft of Noem's purse at DC restaurant

A suspect was arrested in the theft last weekend of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem's purse at a restaurant in downtown Washington, D.C, law enforcement officials said Sunday. The purse included some major belongings, including $3,000 in cash, Noem's DHS access badge, her passport, her driver's license, blank checks and her keys. The theft occurred as Noem was celebrating Easter with her family. 'Thank you to Secret Service and ICE and our law enforcement partners for finding and arresting the criminal who stole my bag on Easter Sunday as I shared a meal with my family at a Washington DC restaurant,' Noem said Sunday in a statement, provided to The Hill through a spokesperson. Law enforcement officials did not identify the suspect by name but accused the individual of being a repeat offender who had immigrated to the United States illegally some years ago. 'This individual is a career criminal who has been in our country illegally for years,' Noem continued in the statement. 'Unfortunately, so many families in this country have been made victims by crime, and that's why President Trump is working every single day to make America safe and get these criminal aliens off of our streets,' she said. U.S. Secret Service Washington Field Office Special Agent in Charge Matt McCool said in a statement that the individual 'was taken into custody without incident' in D.C., following 'an intensive investigation' conducted in coordination with local and federal law enforcement agencies. McCool called the defendant 'a serial offender' and said there was no indication Noem was targeted because of her status as DHS secretary. 'We have also determined that this incident had no protective nexus to Secretary Noem or her role as Secretary of Homeland Security. The investigation revealed alleged criminal activity, including potential device and credit card fraud,' McCool added. The Hill has reached out to the Metropolitan Police Department for comment.
