Why Donaven McCulley switched from quarterback to Michigan football wide receiver
Why Donaven McCulley switched from quarterback to Michigan football wide receiver Michigan football has a new No. 1 receiver, both literally and figuratively. This offseason, the Wolverines brought in former Indiana quarterback and wideout Donaven McCulley, who made the switch to receiver full time two years ago while still in Bloomington. Now that he's in Ann Arbor, the 6-foot-5 pass catcher isn't just expected to be the top target for the maize and blue offense, but he also switched from wearing No. 13 to No. 1 after the spring game. But usually, players yearn to be the man under center, with the ball in their hands every play. However, for McCulley, it made sense for him to make that switch to receiver in 2023, and he hasn't looked back. "I grew up playing quarterback, and that was just how I was raised wanting to be the quarterback," McCulley told Jon Jansen on the In the Trenches Podcast. "But as I got older, I started to grow a little more, get taller, and stuff. And I just noticed I had like really good hands and that was just something that I really wanted to do, play receiver." Though McCulley isn't looking back in terms of wanting to throw darts around The Big House (he already did that as the IU starting QB in 2021), he is grateful that he had the opportunity. Not just because that was part of his childhood dream, but also because it helps him as a receiver. He explained that knowing what the quarterback wants to do, how he reads the wide receiver routes, ball placement, and more, that it's helped him become better once he made the switch to pass catcher. "It helped me a lot like with understanding where the quarterback wants me to be," McCulley said. "Coming to college, I feel like I didn't really get to experience that next level of the quarterback position because I switched so early. But just playing it like really my whole life, I just kind of understand like how the quarterback is going to throw this football or where he's going to be looking like when he scrambles out or something like that. And I think that just kind of helps build chemistry." Fans will get an opportunity to see more of McCulley than they did in the spring game (where he had one catch on one target) come August 30 when the Wolverines host New Mexico for the season opener.

Why Fredrick Moore is emerging as a potential breakout for Michigan football in 2025
Why Fredrick Moore is emerging as a potential breakout for Michigan football in 2025 With so many changes on the offense, you'd think there would be a lot of uncertainty for Michigan football entering 2025. But many of the positions have returning starters, so even with a new offensive coordinator coming in with Chip Lindsey leading the charge, many players are somewhat entrenched. But one position that remains, even in spring ball, a big question mark for the Wolverines is wide receiver. The most prolific receiver entering spring was a transfer in Indiana wideout Donaven McCulley, the former quarterback. But outside of him, no player has more than 200 receiving yards in a season. On Wednesday, McCulley shared his candidate for potential breakout in the room of the extant pass catchers and it's someone who started to look the part late last season. "Fred Moore, he's doing a pretty good job," McCulley said. "I like how he brings a lot of energy. Even if I'm down or maybe I drop a pass or something like that, I know Fred is gonna make a big play." As mentioned, Moore started to come in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Alabama, where he tied a career-high three catches and missed his career high in yards, with 37. His touchdown against the Crimson Tide was his first at the college level. With that, Moore went into that game knowing he had to make an impact. He did, and now he's using that to propel him forward this season. "The ReliaQuest Bowl just gave my confidence back," Moore said. "I had fun out there, and we was in Tampa having fun. I just wanted to prove that I know that we had a receiver left. We had (Tyler Morris) leaving, so it was just my time to step up." So, what has he done to improve? Many might say they've been on the jugs machine, doing drills, looking to increase or decrease this or that. But Moore has particularly honed in on getting his body right -- working on his hips while also increasing size. "From last year, I've been getting my nutrition right. On my body, really getting my hips more flexible," Moore said. I say I've been more flexible. The only things I couldn't really do last year -- and getting bigger, that's about it. "I was playing last year like at 180, I'm like 191." Fans will get an opportunity to see the somewhat new-look Michigan wide receiving corps on April 19 in the annual spring game at The Big House.

Woman takes plea deal in 2023 Santa Fe murder, faces 30 years in prison
SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – It was a bizarre case out of Santa Fe where police say a couple conspired and killed a woman as part of a 'secret organization.' One of the suspects took a plea deal on Monday as prosecutors gear up for trial for the second suspect. Story continues below Don't Miss: Family reunited with lost cat who was missing in desert for nearly a month Crime: Former APD officer used MVD info as tool to bring more clients into DWI scandal National: Former Disney Channel actress 'shot in the face' at birthday event for husband 'This is one of the most unusual cases I've ever encountered,' said Haley Murphy, deputy district attorney for Santa Fe County. 'What happened to Grace is horrific and has shocked law enforcement and has shocked members of this office since the day it came in and we started approving search warrants. Santa Fe Police said Kiara McCulley and Isaac Apodaca killed Grace Jennings in 2022. According to a criminal complaint, McCulley and Apodaca exchanged text messages talking about killing Jennings and how they would clean it up. Police say Apodaca also texted McCulley saying if she killed Jennings, she would move up the 'ranks' in an alleged secret organization. 'The facts and the stories that were told that were told by McCulley and Apodaca were very unusual, involving elements of vigilante groups or that Grace was somehow a sex trafficker that does not seem to have any basis in fact or reality,' said Murphy. 'There's many elements of the ongoing investigation and the case that I can't speak to but I do feel saying that that particular allegation is one that we've never found to have any basis in fact or reality.' On Monday, there was a big development in the case with McCulley admitting to her role in the murder. She pleaded guilty to aggravated murder in the second degree and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. She now faces 30 years in prison. 'We're grateful to have some measure of justice today in the case against Kiara,' said Murphy. She said the plea deal guarantees there is no appeal after trial or incompetency challenges. It also requires strong cooperation from McCulley including her testifying against Apodaca in his upcoming trial. 'It really is a case that has shocked the community, shocked law enforcement, and has left a family devastated,' said Murphy. 'The family has talked at length to what a kind-hearted person Grace was and that her favorite color was purple. And those are two things we are keeping in mind.' Apodaca is set to go to trial in April. krqe News 13 reached out to McCulley's defense attorney for comment on the plea but it was after business hours. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
