All-star athletes to join Damar Hamlin for a weekend of giving back to Pittsburgh kids

McKees Rocks native and current Buffalo Bills Damar Hamlin is gearing up for his weekend giving back to Pittsburgh, the city he says raised him. The weekend will start on Friday, June 13, with a youth football camp at Sto-Rocks High School. Kids can register by clicking here. Advertisement 'The kids can come get the experience of not only being around me, but also, you know, being around my teammates who will be coming out, former teammates, and just some other college, local colleges, you know,' Hamlin said. 'Robert Morris has players that volunteer. Pitt has players that volunteer. Duquesne has players that volunteer. My high school, Central Catholic, has players that come and they volunteer for the youth camp. It's all about the kids.' Empowering children and heart health are two issues Hamlin says are very dear to him. That's why his celebrity basketball game on Saturday night is called 'Hoops for Hearts.' It'll happen Saturday, June 14 at Duquesne University's Cooper Fieldhouse. In last year's celebrity basketball game, Hamlin hit the buzzer-beater to lead his team to the win. 'After hitting the game winner last year, I'm preparing like it's NBA Finals. I feel like I'm Tyrese Halliburton right now,' Hamlin said, talking about the Indiana Pacer guard who recently hit a similar shot in the NBA playoffs. Advertisement Hamlin said Dez Brown, Stefon Diggs, Debo Samuel, Von Miller and Romeo Miller are all committed to coming to the event. Also, some of his former Pitt alumni, including Aaron Donald, Tyler Boyd, and Dane Jackson. WPIAL great Miles Sanders has also committed. 'This is truly about the community. So, not only are you coming out to enjoy an event, but you're coming out to show your support in your community, that you're willing to do your part to show up for your community, that to show that you know we are all stronger together,' Hamlin said. 'The City of Pittsburgh raised me, so to be able to come back and put on events like this, it's truly all about the people and the people who raised me, and the people truly make this event what it is.' Hamlin advises people to get tickets for the event early. Last year's event was packed. On Sunday, there'll be CPR and AED training from 11 am- 3 pm at Mellon Park. It is in conjunction with the Juneteenth YouthFEST. Advertisement Sunday night is the high school football All-Star Game. It features team Jester versus team Chasing M's. 'I'm always excited to be able to continue to make more impact and put in more work. Everything I do is earned through the work,' Hamlin said. It just makes me excited to be able to have a lane to where I can bring something special to the city of Pittsburgh. We're a small, blue collar, hardworking city and we don't always get the praise for being as special as we are. And you know our city is truly special." McKees Rocks man pleads guilty to setting up meeting with FBI agent posing as minor

A McKees Rocks man accused of trying to coerce a minor into sexual activity pleaded guilty in federal court. The United States Attorney's Office said police first encountered Ryan Peters, 35, after receiving a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about his online activity. Investigators said they found a cell phone in a cat litter box in the hallway and a laptop. Child pornography was found on those devices. Police said Peters tried to set up a meeting to engage in sexual activity with what he believed was a 12-year-old girl from Pittsburgh but was actually an undercover FBI agent. He allegedly asked for sexual images and tried to set up multiple meetings. Officers took Peters into custody after he arrived at the predetermined meeting place. He pleaded guilty in court on Tuesday. Peters will be sentenced on Nov. 12. He faces a total maximum sentence of not less than 10 years and up to life in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both. Dogs left without food and water after owner admitted to hospital, neighbor says

2 dogs left without food and water after owner goes to hospital, friend says 2 dogs left without food and water after owner goes to hospital, friend says 2 dogs left without food and water after owner goes to hospital, friend says A woman is trying to get help for two dogs she says are left in deplorable conditions after their owner was admitted to the hospital. The woman reached out to KDKA-TV because she didn't know where else to turn. She said she has called the police, fire department, and county dog warden, but they all told her they can't help. She fears the worst if someone doesn't intervene soon. "I'm worried that these dogs are going to die in this situation," Christina Bowes said. Bowes has been trying to help two dogs in McKees Rocks who have been alone since their owner was admitted to the hospital nearly a week ago. She said she took it upon herself when she found out they were left without food and water. "They're very out of control. They're not potty-trained that good. Whenever I let them out of the cage, if I'm by myself, I can't get them both back in the cage," she said. "I'm trying my best to feed them, but they haven't eaten in three days." Not only is Bowes worried about the dogs not eating, she said she's also concerned for their safety. She described the living conditions of the home as dangerous. That's why she said she doesn't let the dogs run loose throughout the house and confines both of them to one cage. "There's poop and pee all throughout the house, stuck in the wooden floors, and the smell is unbearable," Bowes said. "It kind of looks like hoarding with poop and pee everywhere." KDKA touched base with Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh, which got the ball rolling. HARP acknowledges it's a unique situation because the dogs are still the property of the owner, so it is looking into ways it can legally assist. In a statement, it told KDKA-TV: "Our team has been in contact with the family and local authorities to assess the situation and are looking into every possible solution. Like many shelters, we are currently at capacity, but we are actively exploring the ways we might be able to help." "I'm doing this because I love him. I hope he realizes that. I do have to do what's best," Bowes said. In the meantime, Bowes is looking for another friend or neighbor who may be willing to step up and lend a hand.

Damar Hamlin signs one-year extension with Buffalo Bills

Former University of Pittsburgh safety and McKees Rocks native Damar Hamlin has signed a one-year extension with the Buffalo Bills, the team announced on Wednesday. Hamlin, 26, was one of Buffalo's full-time safety starters in 2024, starting 14 games. He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. With a starting role, Hamlin finished third in total tackles (89), and tied for the team lead in interceptions with two. Hamlin's first career interception came on Monday Night Football in Week 3 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hamlin's rise to team starter comes less than two years after he suffered cardiac arrest on the field after taking a hit to the chest during Buffalo's Week 17 game against the Bengals on Jan. 2, 2023. Since recovering and returning to the field, Hamlin has also participated in several community-based programs, including launching new scholarship programs in honor of the Bills' training staff and the 10 University of Cincinnati Medical Center staff members who helped save his life. More recently, Hamlin delivered a PSA for the American Heart Association's Nation of Lifesavers initiative, emphasizing the importance of AEDs and CPR training in saving lives. "You never know when it's going to be your opportunity to step in and save a life. CPR and AEDs are why I'm still here today," said Hamlin at the time.
