NFL Draft expert Todd McShay likes Cade Klubnik's game, gives an NFL player comp

NFL Draft expert Todd McShay likes Cade Klubnik's game, gives an NFL player comp Former ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay had high praise for Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik this week, offering a notable NFL comparison as Klubnik prepares for his senior season. On The McShay Show, McShay said Klubnik reminds him of Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix, noting similarities in their feel for chaos and improvisation. 'I see a lot of Bo Nix in this kid,' McShay said. 'He's great when the play breaks down — climbing the pocket, sidestepping pressure. It's almost soothing for him. He also has that elastic arm. The ball comes out with more energy than you expect.' McShay said he underestimated Nix during his time at Auburn but came to appreciate his development at Oregon. He now sees those same traits in Klubnik — mobility, size, arm flexibility, and poise under pressure — though he made clear that the comparison was about style, not necessarily ceiling. Klubnik enters the 2025 season as a potential first-round pick and legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate. In 2024, he threw for 3,639 yards, 36 touchdowns and just six interceptions, while rushing for 463 yards and seven more scores. He was one of only two FBS quarterbacks to throw for over 3,500 yards and rush for more than 400. His 43 total touchdowns were second most in the country. In McShay's Way-Too-Early 2026 NFL Mock Draft, he projected Klubnik to the Cleveland Browns at No. 5 overall, calling Clemson's roster 'possibly the most talented Dabo Swinney has had in a decade.' Stephen Muench, McShay's co-host, offered a different comp: veteran NFL quarterback Matthew Stafford. 'I think both Stafford and Klubnik are very tough, very smart,' Muench said. 'He makes confident throws, gets to his third read. That's what you want to see in a next-level guy.' With both arm talent and experience, Klubnik will be a quarterback to watch closely this fall as NFL scouts continue to evaluate one of college football's most intriguing prospects. Rule of Legendary NFL Coach May Prevent Arch Manning From Entering 2026 NFL Draft

Rule of Legendary NFL Coach May Prevent Arch Manning From Entering 2026 NFL Draft originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The stark contrast in perceived talent at quarterback between the 2024 and 2025 NFL Draft was night and day. Advertisement The 2024 class, headlined by Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels, saw six quarterbacks taken in the opening round, one shy of a draft record. The class was viewed as having multiple franchise quarterbacks with superstar potential. When it came to this year's class, the pool of talent was so shallow that immediately after the draft, many already turned their attention to 2026. There is still a lot that needs to unfold, but plenty of people around the sport have been penciling Texas quarterback Arch Manning in as the top prospect in the class. A distinction that some think is due to the pedigree of his last name, while others are convinced they've seen enough flashes despite him having just two career starts. On a recent episode of the "McShay Show," NFL draft insider Todd McShay dove into the prospect that is the youngest Manning, and addressed the notion of him leaving after just one season as the starter in Austin. Aside from pointing out that his uncles, Peyton (Tennessee) and Eli (Ole Miss), stayed at the college level longer than most expected, McShay also referenced an old rule of thumb for drafting quarterbacks that the legendary Bill Parcells pioneered. "They are as well equipped as any family (the Mannings) to have shown through history, through proof that they value the importance of learning and starting games in college," McShay said. "It's the old Parcells theory." Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning (16).Jerome Miron-Imagn Images The two-time Super Bowl Champion head coach had seven things that needed to be checked off a list to really consider a quarterback: Advertisement Be a senior. In the process of graduating or already possessing their degree Three-year starter Have at least 23 wins Start at least 30 games 2:1 touchdown to interception ratio 60% completion percentage McShay pointed out notable flops who were taken early but didn't reach the marks, such as Mitch Trubisky, Mark Sanchez and, most recently, Anthony Richardson. While not every case is the same, and Manning simply could be the generational prospect that some think he will be, there seem to be more signs pointing to him returning to Texas after 2025 than people realize. His uncles each stayed four years, Texas was his dream school and most importantly, history shows that a quarterback who leaves early has struggled. So, although speculating his draft spot is fun, it does feel safer to assume he won't be leaving anytime soon. Todd McShay sparks major buzz regarding Baltimore Ravens rookie

When you're the smallest guy in the room, you better be the toughest. That's exactly the attitude LaJohntay Wester is bringing to Baltimore — and ESPN's Todd McShay says NFL fans, especially Colorado Buffaloes faithful, shouldn't underestimate what he can become. Wester, a sixth-round pick (No. 203 overall) by the Ravens, stands just 5'10' and 163 pounds. But McShay isn't concerned. In fact, while speaking on his own podcast, The McShay Show, he let it be known he's bullish on Wester's NFL chances. 'He's a tough little nugget, man,' McShay said. 'This guy's going to get in there with the Ravens receiver room… and he's going to look around and be like, 'Hey, I can play on this team.'' Ravens fans may not know him yet, but Colorado certainly does. After transferring from Florida Atlantic — where he posted 108 receptions in 2023 (second-most in the FBS) — Wester quickly became one of Coach Prime's most trusted weapons. In his lone season in Boulder, Wester logged 74 receptions for 931 yards and 10 touchdowns, averaging nearly 13 yards per catch. Advertisement While much of the national spotlight stayed on Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, McShay saw something different. 'If they were double teaming or rolling coverage to Travis Hunter, [Wester] showed up,' he said. 'He's been doing it for a while. Just nobody knew about it.' Baltimore's wide receiver room is crowded — but not impenetrable. Zay Flowers is locked in. Rashod Bateman has battled injuries. DeAndre Hopkins is 32 and nearing the end of his career. The fourth-leading wideout in receptions last year? Tylen Wallace — with just 10 catches. He's quicker than fast, slippery in space, and built for big moments in small windows. And in an offense designed for creative mismatches, he might be exactly what Lamar Jackson didn't know he needed. Advertisement Buffs fans watched Wester shine when it mattered most. Now, with the Ravens looking for production beyond their stars, it might be time for the rest of the league to finally notice. There's more buzz about the Broncos making a trade in 1st round of NFL draft

There's been a lot of buzz this week that the Denver Broncos could trade up to make a big splash in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft on Thursday evening. The Ringer's Todd McShay released a podcast with his final mock draft on Wednesday, and he has the Broncos picking Michigan tight end Colston Loveland. McShay said in his podcast that he picked Loveland because he fell to Denver, but he didn't rule out the possibility of a running back pick. McShay also thinks the team could trade up. Advertisement "They're making a lot of calls -- according to people I'm talking to -- about moving up," McShay said. "So keep an eye on Sean [Payton] -- I think he's -- I think he knows he's got his guy at quarterback. I don't think that, I know he knows he's got his guy at quarterback. ... I think he's kind of in this emergency mode and, 'We've got our guy,' we need another Joker or two. ... "I think Denver is trying to be aggressive. It won't surprise me a little bit -- in fact, I'd say it's more probable than not that they're not picking at 20 [and] that they're picking earlier." McShay said in his podcast that he doesn't expect Loveland to fall to the Broncos, but that's how the board ended up falling in his mock. (Meanwhile, NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah has Denver trading up to pick No. 13 to select Loveland in his final mock draft.) Advertisement Not everyone is convinced the Broncos are actually a contender to trade up. KUSA-TV's Mike Klis tweeted this on Thursday morning: "From what I've heard if Broncos do make a trade from No. 20, it's more likely to be a trade back than up. A possible sweet trading spot as QB-needy Steelers are sitting No. 21." That tweet from Klis aligned with what ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted 10 minutes earlier: "Broncos have fielded calls in recent days from teams interested in potentially moving up to Denver's No. 20 selection, per sources. The Broncos currently hold the draft slot in front of Pittsburgh's No. 21." The two tweets having similar framing suggests that Klis and Schefter might have received the information from the same source (but that's just speculation). Advertisement So is Denver aiming to trade up, stay put or move back? Nobody knows! We'll get answers tonight (the draft begins at 8 p.m. ET/6 p.m. MT).
