There's more buzz about the Broncos making a trade in 1st round of NFL draft

Yahoo24-04-2025

There's been a lot of buzz this week that the Denver Broncos could trade up to make a big splash in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft on Thursday evening.
The Ringer's Todd McShay released a podcast with his final mock draft on Wednesday, and he has the Broncos picking Michigan tight end Colston Loveland. McShay said in his podcast that he picked Loveland because he fell to Denver, but he didn't rule out the possibility of a running back pick. McShay also thinks the team could trade up.

"They're making a lot of calls -- according to people I'm talking to -- about moving up," McShay said. "So keep an eye on Sean [Payton] -- I think he's -- I think he knows he's got his guy at quarterback. I don't think that, I know he knows he's got his guy at quarterback. ... I think he's kind of in this emergency mode and, 'We've got our guy,' we need another Joker or two. ...
"I think Denver is trying to be aggressive. It won't surprise me a little bit -- in fact, I'd say it's more probable than not that they're not picking at 20 [and] that they're picking earlier."
McShay said in his podcast that he doesn't expect Loveland to fall to the Broncos, but that's how the board ended up falling in his mock. (Meanwhile, NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah has Denver trading up to pick No. 13 to select Loveland in his final mock draft.)

Not everyone is convinced the Broncos are actually a contender to trade up.
KUSA-TV's Mike Klis tweeted this on Thursday morning: "From what I've heard if Broncos do make a trade from No. 20, it's more likely to be a trade back than up. A possible sweet trading spot as QB-needy Steelers are sitting No. 21."
That tweet from Klis aligned with what ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted 10 minutes earlier: "Broncos have fielded calls in recent days from teams interested in potentially moving up to Denver's No. 20 selection, per sources. The Broncos currently hold the draft slot in front of Pittsburgh's No. 21."
The two tweets having similar framing suggests that Klis and Schefter might have received the information from the same source (but that's just speculation).

So is Denver aiming to trade up, stay put or move back? Nobody knows!
We'll get answers tonight (the draft begins at 8 p.m. ET/6 p.m. MT). We'll track all of the team's moves on Broncos Wire.

Giants place Patrick Bailey on injured list. Logan Porter sees first MLB action since 2023

DENVER — Logan Porter battled traffic and airport security to get to Denver, and the San Francisco Giants catcher played in his first big league game since 2023. San Francisco Giants placed Patrick Bailey on the 10-day injured list with a strained neck on Wednesday and selected the contract of Porter from Triple-A Sacramento. Porter had to scramble to get from Seattle on Wednesday morning but arrived in time for batting practice at Coors Field before Wednesday night's game against the Colorado Rockies. 'Almost missed the flight, a lot of traffic,' Porter said before the Giants earned their seventh consecutive win . 'I think I was the last one on the flight and security took an hour and half. It was a mess. 'A little overwhelming. I was like, 'All right, if I don't make it, this is going to be interesting.' But we made it.' Bailey, whose trip to the IL is retroactive to Sunday, is batting .185 with one homer and 16 RBIs this season. The Giants hoped he would be OK to back up Andrew Knizner during the series at Colorado but he didn't improve. 'It's really hard to not have a second catcher and he just didn't get that much better (Wednesday),' manager Bob Melvin said. 'Didn't feel like were in position to try to push it to (Thursday). The prudent thing to do was to IL him right now.' Bailey is the second Giants player to hit the injured list this week. Third baseman Matt Chapman was placed on the IL with a sprained right hand, suffered in Sunday's win over Atlanta . 'It seems like it comes in waves,' Melvin said. 'Everybody goes through it. Expectation doesn't change. Logan knows our guys, knows all the signs, so it's a good fit as well.' Porter pinch hit in Wednesday night's 10-7 win, his first major league game since he was with the Kansas City Royals in 2023. He hit .194 over 11 games with one homer that season. He signed a minor league contract with San Francisco on Nov. 14, 2024, and was with the team during spring training. Melvin said Porter will likely be behind the plate Thursday when Hayden Birdsong is on the mound. Porter caught the starters and relievers during the Cactus League and feels comfortable with them at the major league level. 'It should just be easy transition, and I'm familiar with the bullpen,' he said. The team also designated infielder Osleivis Basabe for assignment. He was batting .242 with four homers with Sacramento. Basabe's contract was purchased by the Giants from Tampa Bay in February. ___ AP MLB:

Former NFL Kicker and SMU Great Unexpectedly Dies at 65 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Green Bay Packers kicker Eddie Garcia passed away at his home in Poygan, Wisconsin last week. He was 65. Advertisement The tenth-round pick in the 1982 NFL Draft spent three seasons with the Packers. While at SMU, Garcia earned first-team All SWC honors in 1980 and was a second-team AP All-American in 1981 for the Mustangs. As of the 2024 season, Garcia ranks 5th all-time in career points for SMU with 262 (130 PATs and 44 field goals) Garcia kicked in 19 NFL games over the 1983 and '84 seasons, making three of nine field goal attempts. In his first season, he handled the kickoff duties while Jan Stenerud kicked field goals and extra points. In 1984, Garcia was the kicker for seven games until he injured his hamstring and was placed on injured reserve. He was waived following the season, according to the Packers. Jets' Sauce Gardner Gets Strong Praise From Veteran Coaches

Jets' Sauce Gardner Gets Strong Praise From Veteran Coaches originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- When he is at the top of his game, New York Jets All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner is the best in the league. Advertisement The former fourth overall pick was the first defensive back in NFL history to be named a first-team All-Pro in his first two seasons. After a strong start to his career, though, Gardner struggled last season. He was still a Pro Bowl player but was penalized more for his aggressive style and struggled to tackle throughout the 2024 campaign. Under a new coaching staff, Gardner's expectations are back to where they were after 2023. Defensive coordinator Steve Wilks believes he can get the most out of their new star. "It's so many things that I feel like Sauce can do," Wilks said. "Again, the word consistent. He's been a Pro Bowl consistent can he be to take it to another level? Advertisement "And that's one of the things that I challenged him on day one when we had our conversation." It's important to remember that Gardner's worse season was still pretty damn good compared to other players in his position. If he can reduce the penalties and improve his tackling, Gardner should be expected to return to his All-Pro status. According to Wilks, that is precisely what the team expects out of him. And what Gardner expects out of himself. Few cornerbacks in the NFL have the kind of frame that Gardner is working with. Wilks commented about that on Wednesday as part of why consistency is such a focus for the All-Pro this year. Advertisement If Gardner can return to that status in 2023, the Jets' defense will continue to be one of the best in football.
