Gavin Cromwell's son Jake makes waves with first Dingle Festival winners

Gavin Cromwell's son Jake rode his first Dingle Festival pony race winners at the weekend. Cromwell senior, who is one of Ireland's top racing trainers, was present to join in the celebrations as 13-year-old Jake won aboard the highly-rated Little Chief on Saturday after leading from the front. And Jake left the famous county Kerry track with two wins over the course of the three-day as he was victorious on Little Chief on Sunday as well. It brings his haul of winners to 13 this term, including a treble at Navan in mid-June. The Meath-based trainer is plotting a successful defence of the prestigious Cheltenham prize as Inothewayurthinkin could make it a festival hat-trick after eye-catching wins in 2024 and again this year. Cromwell is hoping that Inothewayurthinkin, already the favourite for next year's Gold Cup, can emulate the back to back success of Al Boum Photo and Galopin Des Champs in recent years. Breaking Ex-cathaoirleach pleads guilty to €172,000 theft from charity

A former cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council has pleaded guilty to the theft of just over €172,000 from a Co Meath charity. Seán McKiernan, with an address at Trinity Bungalow, Virginia Road, Bailieborough in Co Cavan, was charged with 58 counts of theft at various unknown locations within the State. The charges relate to thefts in amounts ranging from €500 to €7,500 from Navan Mental Health Housing Association on dates in 2019. McKiernan, 43, appeared before Judge John Martin at Trim Circuit Court, where the former Fine Gael councillor pleaded guilty to two sample charges. The first sample count relates to the theft of €5,230 on 26 March 2019 at an unknown location, while the second count involves the theft of €800 from the Meath-based charity on the 6 April 2020. McKiernan was a councillor for the Bailieborough electoral area from 2007 to 2014. He made history in 2011 when, at age 29, he was elected as the youngest ever Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council. He was a member of the Cavan Monaghan Education Training Board and served a term as its chair. McKiernan was also a member of the national executive of Fine Gael for over a decade. Free legal aid was previously granted to Mr McKiernan in the form of a solicitor and two barristers. Judge Martin remanded McKiernan on continuing bail to appear before Trim Circuit Court on 21 October next for a sentencing date to be set.

Revenue seeks to wind up Dublin accountancy firm

Murlyn Accountants is controlled by Adrian O'Lionscaigh. In recent months, he has been attempting to assist a number of Chinese nationals to recoup a total of €9m they ploughed into an Irish construction company that was building social housing units. A notice in the official state gazette Iris Oifigiúil on Tuesday states that a petition was filed by the Revenue Commissioners on June 13. The petition against Murlyn Accountants is due to be heard before the High Court on July 14. 'Any creditor or contributory of the said company who wishes to support or oppose the making of an order on the said petition may appear at the time of hearing by himself or his counsel for that purpose,' the notice said. Mr O'Lionscaigh has been asked for comment. Murlyn Accountants is owned by UK-based H And H Avalon Holdings which is listed as being dormant and Mr O'Lionscaigh is listed as its only director. A compulsory strike-off notice was issued for H and H Avalon Holdings last year, but the process was suspended in October following opposition to the move. In December last year, the company's address was changed by the UK's Registrar of Companies to the Companies House head office in Cardiff. The company secretary of Murlyn Accountants is Danni Zeng. She is also involved in another Irish accountancy firm co-founded by Mr O'Lionscaigh, Dublin-based PLZ Accountants, which is not affected by or subject to the petition by the Revenue Commissioners. The last set of publicly available accounts for Murlyn Accountants, which are for 2023, show that it had fixed assets of almost €272,000 at the end of that year, including debtors of almost €230,000. It owed just over €175,000 to creditors. It was reported earlier this year that seven of nine Chinese nationals who invested €9m into Meath-based Trinity Homes between 2018 and 2022 have turned to Mr O'Lionscaigh in an effort to secure the return of their funds. The money was invested by the Chinese nationals as part of the Irish Government's now defunct Immigrant Investor Programme, which allowed foreign nationals to secure residency in Ireland for a fixed period if they made qualifying investments.
