Maruti Suzuki opens admissions for new skill development institute in Sonipat

Maruti Suzuki has commenced admissions for the inaugural batch at its newly established Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM) in Sonipat, Haryana. This marks the company's fourth JIM in India and the second in the state after Uncha up in partnership with the Government of Haryana at the Master Atul Government ITI campus, JIM Sonipat will train over 100 students annually across four trades, which includes Mechanic Motor Vehicle (MMV), Machinist, Welder, and Fitter. The first academic session is set to begin in September institute is backed by a Rs 10 crore investment from Maruti Suzuki and follows a dual-training model that blends theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. The curriculum is aligned with the National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) and incorporates Japanese best practices, including safety, quality and discipline. Praising the initiative, Minister of State for Youth Empowerment and Entrepreneurship Gaurav Gautam, called it a valuable contribution to the Skill India Mission and Haryana's economic growth. "Maruti Suzuki's commitment to skill development in Haryana through its state-of-the-art JIMs at Uncha Majra and now at Sonipat is truly commendable. By training youth and equipping them with industry-relevant skills, the Company is paving the way for their brighter future and contributing to Haryana's development and economic growth. This is in line with the Hon'ble Prime Minister's 'Skill India Mission' and I applaud Maruti Suzuki's efforts in this space," he Bharti, Senior Executive Officer, Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, emphasised the institute's role in fostering employability and a strong work ethic. "We are committed to supporting the Government of India's 'Skill India Mission' by training youth and making them industry ready. After setting up our first JIM in Haryana at Uncha Majra, we are thankful to the Government of Haryana for providing us the opportunity to set up the second JIM in the state. We are confident that both JIMs will prepare the students for opportunities across the automobile ecosystem and contribute to progress of Haryana," he added. The Haryana government has provided the land and building for JIM Sonipat, while Maruti Suzuki has undertaken civil infrastructure upgrades, set up an assembly line for real-world training, and will oversee operations and training JIM initiative stems from a 2016 bilateral agreement between the Governments of India and Japan aimed at training 30,000 Indian youth in manufacturing skills over 10 years. To date, over 2,100 students have graduated from Maruti Suzuki's three existing JIMs in Mehsana, Uncha Majra, and Suzuki's broader skill development program includes upgrading 23 government ITIs, equipping 130 institutes with EV-related training tools, and operating 31 Automobile Skill Enhancement Centres across India. Maruti Suzuki sets up JIM in Haryana to boost auto sector vocational training

The company has invested ₹ 10 crore in establishing the new JIM campus as part of its broader skill development initiatives aligned with the government's 'Skill India Mission'. This is Maruti Suzuki's second JIM in the state, following the earlier institute set up at Uncha Majra. This model blends classroom instruction with hands-on, shop-floor experience. The curriculum will cover essential subjects like safety, quality control, and technical disciplines, along with Japanese manufacturing practices such as kaizen (continuous improvement) and workplace discipline. This approach is intended to make students job-ready with a skillset that meets current industry standards, especially in the automotive manufacturing space. Government support and strategic collaborations Under a Memorandum of Agreement, the Haryana government provided the land and building for JIM Sonipat, while Maruti Suzuki took charge of infrastructure upgrades, installation of training equipment, and overall operations. Everything we know so far Haryana's Minister of State for Youth Empowerment & Entrepreneurship, Gaurav Gautam, recognised the initiative as a significant contribution to state development. He emphasized that the training offered by Maruti Suzuki would fill the skills gap in the manufacturing industry and meet national employment objectives. Part of a larger skill-building strategy JIM Sonipat is part of various initiatives under the multi-pronged skill development strategy of Maruti Suzuki. Besides establishing standalone JIMs, the company also assists 23 government ITIs pan-India and facilitated the establishment of 31 Automobile Skill Enhancement Centres (ASECs) for advanced auto training. Additionally, the Company made investments in new age technology education (hybrid and electric cars) with the launch of high-voltage technology in 130 ITIs in India. Maruti Suzuki invested over ₹ 450 crore for skill development as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program until FY2024–25. JIMs are a part of a collaboration between the governments of India and Japan to educate 30,000 Indian youth with manufacturing capabilities as the target to finalize this by 2026. JIMs have seen over 2,100 students graduate from Maruti Suzuki sponsored JIM since the program was conceptualized. As the automotive industry transitions from older technologies and quality requirements to newer technologies and higher quality requirements, Maruti Suzuki and their future in Sonipat will help prepare India's workforce for the future.
