MarQuel Mederos said he was just throwing sh*t\u00a0without a plan at UFC 316

MarQuel Mederos said he was just throwing sh*t without a plan at UFC 316 Show Caption Hide Caption UFC 316: MarQuel Mederos post-fight interview UFC 316 winner MarQuel Mederos spoke to MMA Junkie and reporters post-fight after his unanimous decision victory over Yanal Ashmouz. NEWARK, N.J. – MarQuel Mederos met the media Saturday after his unanimous decision win over Mark Choinski at UFC 316. Mederos (11-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) used a punishing leg-kick attack against Choinski (8-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC), who took the fight on a week's notice, to open up the preliminary card at Prudential Center. Mederos won for the ninth straight time and landed 32 of his 38 leg kicks – and took Choinski off his feet multiple times with them. Mederos said when it comes to getting ready for an opponent on short notice, it's mostly about making sure he's well-versed across the board – and then listening to his coaches during the fight to make adjustments. But he landed enough interesting strikes that he could have been confused for having a game plan. Not the case. 'I was just in there doing sh*t – simple as that,' Mederos said at his post-fight news conference. 'Nothing was planned. I was just in there throwing sh*t.' Mederos also had the benefit of a training camp – though just not one he expected to be for this card. He was supposed to fight a week ago, but had to pull out during fight week with an illness. Then he got rebooked in a hurry against Choinski. Check out Mederos' post-fight news conference in the video above.

Angels DFA RHP Carl Edwards Jr. in bullpen shake-up

April 26 - The Los Angeles Angels adjusted their bullpen with a pair of moves Saturday, as left-hander Jake Eder was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake and right-hander Jose Fermin had his contract purchased from Double-A Rocket City. The Angels designated right-hander Carl Edwards Jr. for assignment after right-hander Victor Mederos was optioned to Salt Lake late Friday. Eder, 26, has one game of major league experience in a two-inning outing with the Chicago White Sox last season. He was 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in three appearances at Triple-A. Fermin, 23, is set to make his major league debut after he went 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA in six relief appearances at Rocket City. Edwards, who won a World Series title with the Chicago Cubs in 2016, gave up three runs in two outings for the Angels after he was called up Wednesday along with Mederos. An 11-year veteran, Edwards is 16-14 in his career with a 3.59 ERA in 298 relief outings for seven different clubs. Mederos, 23, gave up two runs in three innings of his lone outing Friday on the road against the Minnesota Twins.

UFC on ESPN 64 winner MarQuel Mederos says 'f*ck it' and calls out lightweight veteran

MEXICO CITY – MarQuel Mederos wasn't totally thrilled with his performance, so a callout wasn't the first thing on his mind. But just as he was going to officially decline a namedrop once and for all, he had a change of heart. Following his UFC on ESPN 64 win over Austin Hubbard on Saturday in Mexico City, Mederos (10-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) mentioned the experienced veteran Jared Gordon (20-7 MMA, 8-6 UFC) as a potential next fight. 'I have some things in mind,' Mederos told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a news conference after the win. 'But definitely after that fight, I think I need to sit my ass down and go do some training. Then, we can talk about that later. That's my next move. Actually, you know what? F*ck it. I had Jared Gordon in mind and that's who I wanted. If they can make that happen, let's make it happen. I don't really have a date necessarily, but I'd love to have that fight.' Mederos said the callout is rooted less in what Gordon does and more in his own self-confidence. Mederos has yet to lose as a professional and thinks he has the skills to beat a crafty veteran like Gordon. 'I like a lot of things,' Mederos said. 'You see when you ask me about it, it puts a smile on my face. I like a lot of things. I more like the idea of what I can do, rather than what he has going on. But I love the idea of the fight, just in general.' For more on the card, visit MMA Junkie's event hub for UFC on ESPN 64.

Mixed-status Modesto family worry about Trump administration's immigration policy

MODESTO — As President Trump's pledge to increase immigration enforcement begins, ICE is confirming crackdowns are ramping up in cities across the country. Now, the fear factor is setting in for migrant families in California communities. One undocumented Modesto couple sat down with me to talk about their concerns. Gabriella Mederos and Alfredo Renteria said they wanted to share their story to help others. The couple are parents to a teenage son, Miguel, who was born in the U.S. and is a citizen. They own a Modesto printing business and have five employees. They're wondering what will come next. I asked why they were willing to risk sharing their story and showing their identities on camera. "It's simple. We want to help people wake up," Renteria said. When asked if they were concerned about being deported, Mederos responded, "Yes because we don't have a fixed status. We are in a process, but we don't know what might happen." "When you decided to come, were you aware of the risk that without documents, you could be deported?" I asked the couple. "I already completed my degree in Mexico," Mederos said. "In 2010, I decided to come here due to a very dangerous situation. My life completely changed." Mederos came with her father, paying a human smuggler often referred to as coyotes or polleros, to help her cross the border. Renteria arrived on a tourist visa legally. When the visa expired, he never went back. "Here, if you work, you'll come along successful," Renteria said. Nonprofit immigrant rights groups like El Concilio California are now hosting crowded classrooms preparing undocumented immigrants with what to tell law enforcement if they are detained. California Assemblymember Heath Flora is a Stanislaus County farmer, a Republican and a Trump supporter who says undocumented workers who do not have a criminal record should be encouraged to come forward to get legal papers without fearing deportation. "I've supported President Trump. I support a secure border as well, but I think there is a right and a wrong way to do things, and I think that President Trump wrote a book about the art of the deal," Flora said. "I'm hoping that we come back and have a more comprehensive approach to immigration policy." For Renteria and Mederos, their future as undocumented immigrants is uncertain. "I never thought I would arrive in this country," Mederos said. "My greatest wish is that if we're able to gain legal status, that everything will be good for my son, my family — and to help others get inspired by my story." This Modesto couple serves as a symbol for the U.S. immigration debate, seeking a citizenship solution. Renteria and Mederos are working on their citizenship process through El Concilio California. Under current law for undocumented couples like them, it's tough to get legal status with no parent or spouse to petition them.
