Maharashtra Govt Scraps 10% EWS Quota in Private Medical Colleges After Protests

The announcement for EWS reservation was introduced in the brochure without any formal announcement and this left aspirants and their parents shocked. New Delhi: The Maharashtra government has scrapped the economically weaker section (EWS) quota in private medical colleges. Hindustan Times has reported the government took this decision after protest from those who were seeking admission to these colleges and their parents. These colleges were supposed to implement 10% EWS reservation for the MBBS courses. However, the total number of seats were not increased and this would have reduced the seats open for unreserved categories to 3,500. The announcement for EWS reservation was introduced in the brochure without any formal announcement and this left aspirants and their parents shocked. Quoting the brochure, Medical Dialogues reported in government, government aided, corporation and private medical colleges (not having minority status) 10% of the total seats that came under state quota should have been reserved for the EWS category. The aspirants had written to Maharashtra education minister, Hasan Mushrif, stating a Supreme Court ruling that seats can be reserved under EWS category when it does not affect the total number of seats available to others in ither categories. The revised brochure, as per Medical Dialogues stated thus: 'For MBBS/Bachelor of Dental Surgery/Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery/Bachelor of Homeopathy and Surgery and Bachelor of Unani Medicine and sSurgery courses, this reservation will be applicable only if central Government/ respective council increased existing seats. For courses other than MBBS/ BDS/ BAMS/ BHMS and BUMS courses 10% EWS reservation will be applicable on available seats.'
