D.A.: Third person charged in fatal Mattapan shooting from February
24-year-old Jair Meeks of Mattapan has been charged in connection with a fatal Mattapan shooting from February, the Suffolk County District Attorney has announced. Meeks is being charged with one count of accessory before the fact and has been ordered to be held on bail. Alongside Meeks, Shavon Darby, 29, of East Weymouth, and Roberto Orlando Taylor, 29, of Dorchester, were also charged back on May 8. The incident took place back on February 4, around 11:30 PM, when officers responded to a report of a person shot in the area of 35 Tennis Road near Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan. Upon arrival, officers found 33-year-old Mauricio Lawrence suffering from gunshot wounds. Lawrence passed away while being transported by EMS to Boston Medical Center. During the investigation, police obtained surveillance video which showed Meeks entering Lawrence's place of work about six hours before the shooting to record him. Outside, Darby and Taylor waited nearby in a Honda Accord. In audio obtained by the Honda's dashcam, Meeks can be heard telling Darby and Taylor to 'wrap [the gun] up in a bag' and to 'try to catch the shells'. Meeks also advised the two to put different tire rims on the car to alter its appearance and to use special tape to cover the license plate, making the vehicle harder to detect. Later that day, Darby and Taylor followed Lawrence in the Honda Accord when he left work. As Lawrence arrived to his apartment door, Taylor approached him and fired. A ShotSpotter activation had detected 18 shots in seven seconds. Taylor then returned to the car, and he and Darby drove away. Darby sent Meeks a text the following morning saying, 'It's complete.' Meeks, Darby, and Taylor are due back in Suffolk Superior on June 17 for pre-trial hearings. This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available. House Democrat: Trump wants to follow Putin ‘model,' destroy institutions
Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.) accused President Trump of trying to emulate Russian President Vladimir Putin by punishing Harvard University and other institutions Trump views as opposing his administration. 'He wants to follow the model of Vladimir Putin,' Meeks, the ranking member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told CNN's Sara Sidner in an interview Wednesday. 'He wants us to be similar to that.' Meeks said Trump is 'trying to destroy our institutions,' which he described as the 'fabric of America.' Trump has taken aim at Harvard by canceling federal contracts, threatening the college's ability to enroll students from other countries, launching multiple investigations and questioning the school's tax-exempt status, among other efforts. The university and the administration are in ongoing legal fights over the rifts. Trump accused Harvard of fostering discrimination and antisemitism on campus and said that's why he has gone after the nation's oldest and richest college. 'Harvard is an Anti-Semitic, Far Left Institution, as are numerous others, with students being accepted from all over the World that want to rip our Country apart,' Trump wrote in a recent Truth Social post. 'The place is a Liberal mess, allowing a certain group of crazed lunatics to enter and exit the classroom and spew fake ANGER AND HATE. It is truly horrific!' Meeks disagreed with Trump's claims. 'This is about retribution,' he told Sidner. 'This is about individuals, as we've seen again and again, universities, law firms, any individual that Trump perceives to be his enemy.' 'It's about him wanting to be a king,' Meeks added. Meeks said he views universities like Harvard as offering a valuable avenue for scholars to come to the U.S. and make the country better through research and other endeavors. 'That's what we should be about, not [Trump] trying to stand and look like a king and say, 'This is what I want; this against me, and so, therefore, I'm going after you,'' Meeks said. Trump has shown increasing hostility toward Putin in recent days after maintaining a friendly relationship with the Russian leader in the past. Trump lashed out this week over Russia's continued war against Ukraine. 'What Vladimir Putin doesn't realize is that if it weren't for me, lots of really bad things would have already happened to Russia, and I mean REALLY BAD,' Trump posted Tuesday on Truth Social. 'He's playing with fire!' Meeks has proposed legislation that would put new sanctions on Putin and Russia. 'There is no pressure on Russia at all, and I think it's time for the United States Congress to step up,' Meeks said on CNN. 'All along what Putin wanted to do was buy time and allow Trump to come in and do nothing so that they could do all that they wanted to do. And that's what's happening here.' Trump Admin Sidesteps Congress by Calling Trade Deficit a National Emergency, Dem Lawmaker Says: 'It Hasn't Been for Four Decades'
Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) criticized Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for claiming that long-standing trade deficits constitute a "national emergency," accusing the Trump administration of using a baseless claim to skirt the Constitution. During a Wednesday Congressional hearing, Meeks asked Bessent directly, "Does a trade deficit constitute a national emergency? Yes or no." Bessent responded affirmatively, stating, "It is a national emergency, sir." "Do you know that for the last four decades we've have trade deficits and nobody said it was a national emergency?" Meeks fired back. "You know what that says to me? That it's not an emergency, because it hasn't been for four decades." The congressman went on to accuse the Trump administration of using the label of "emergency" as a pretext to sidestep Congress and unilaterally impose tariffs. "It says to me that we should bring tariffs back to the United States Congress so that we can make that determination as the Constitution has said and not try to go around Congress," Meeks continued. "That's just unbelievable to me." The confrontation comes amid growing criticism of President Donald Trump's aggressive trade policies and what some speculate as reliance on emergency powers to act without congressional oversight. Law enforcement honor fallen officers at Kansas Statehouse
TOPEKA (KSNT) — Several law enforcement agencies gathered at the State Capitol Thursday to honor several officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Kansas law enforcement agencies held their annual candlelight vigil inside the Statehouse on May 1. The memorial service was in honor of National Police Week. Officers from across the state and their loved ones gathered in downtown Topeka. Before the vigil, there was a ride for the fallen, and people surrounded the memorial on the lawn outside the Statehouse. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, nearly 150 officers across the country were killed in 2024. Sarah Meeks told 27 News she has waited 48 years to see her husband's name on the memorial, and she was finally able to. 'It's amazing. And I see another name that I recognized, that I knew his wife for years,' Meeks said. 'And it just makes your heart tingle just to see it all.' The Kansas Law Enforcement Ceremony ends at 12 p.m. Friday, May 2, with a wreath-laying ceremony. The public is encouraged to attend. For more local news, click here.
