Forgotten Mega Millions tickets — worth $1M — found 5 months later in junk drawer

A couple checked their 'junk drawers' and instead of finding 'a pen with a missing cap,' they came across three forgotten lottery tickets, New Jersey officials said. Little did the duo know, one of the Mega Million tickets they bought on New Year's Eve in Trenton would be carrying a $1 million prize, according to a May 23 news release by the New Jersey Lottery. 'I was in the house and I just opened the drawer and I saw the tickets. I decided to get them checked,' the winner told lottery officials. 'I scanned them. One said 'not a winner,' and then another 'not a winner,' and then I scanned a ticket that said 'winner.'' Then the lucky player took the ticket home and compared the numbers on it to the lottery website, quickly learning they had 'matched the five white balls,' officials said. But theyremained skeptical. 'I thought maybe $1,000. Or $10,000. I couldn't believe it — $1 million?!?,' the winner said. Luckily, winning lottery tickets in New Jersey have a year to be claimed before they expire, officials said. As for what the pair will do with the money, they said, 'For us, it's more about helping the children, making sure they don't have debt,' according to the release.

Last chance for $2 tickets! Mega Millions prices, odds, jackpots change next week

Big changes are coming to the Mega Millions lottery next week. Today is the last Mega Millions drawing that tickets will cost $5. By next Tuesday, April 8, Mega Millions tickets will cost $5. And it doesn't stop at ticket prices, there are a few other 'mega' changes coming to the lottery game, like better odds of winning and bigger non-jackpot prizes. 'Beyond big jackpots, players told us they want bigger non-jackpot prizes and that's exactly what this new game delivers,' Joshua Johnston, Lead Director of the Mega Millions Consortium, said in a release last week. 'Non-jackpot prizes at every level are going up by 2X to 10X. That's the kind of value the new Mega Millions will deliver to our players at every single drawing.' Here's what to know about the new Mega Millions, which will begin next week. 7 things to know: Mega Millions jackpots to get bigger faster, ticket prices going up. On Tuesday, April 8, Mega Millions tickets will cost more than $2 for the first time in the history of the game. The price of the tickets will be more than double what they are now, at $5 per play. But the multiplier is included in this price, meaning the current $1 charge to add the multiplier will go away. This is only the second time the ticket price has gone up since the game began in 2002. In 2017, the price increased from $1 to $2. Here's a quick breakdown of all the changes coming to the Mega Millions lottery, beginning on Tuesday, April 8: Bigger starting jackpots will grow faster, higher: After someone wins a jackpot, the new one will reset to $50 million instead of the current $20 million and is expected to rise more quickly under the new system. According to the Mega Millions Consortium, the average jackpot win in the new game, currently about $450 million, will rise to more than $800 million. That means we could see more billion-dollar-plus jackpots. Non-jackpot prizes will also go up. New Mega Millions game to have better odds: The new game will feature 24 Mega Balls instead of 25, Mega Millions said, which will improve the overall odds to win any prize to 1 out of 23 from 1 out of 24. Prizes will get automatic, random multiplier of 2-10X: In Florida and some other states, when you buy a Mega Millions ticket you can pay an extra $1 to get a "Megaplier" that multiplies whatever you win (except the big jackpot) from two to five times. In the new game, everyone gets a multiplier built in for no extra charge, with chances to have your prize automatically and randomly multiplied by two, three, four, five or 10 times. The "Just the Jackpot" feature available in some states will be retired. Starting on Tuesday, April 8, Mega Million prizes will range from $10 to $10 million, compared to the current range of $2 to $1 million. Ticket prices rising to $5: The price of the tickets will be more than double at $5 per play, rather than the current $2. You'll always win more than the cost of the ticket: Right now, it's possible to pay $2 and win $2. Ticket prices are going up, but with every ticket including a multiplier of at least 2X, the minimum prize will be $10. With less Mega Balls included in the drawing, the odds of winning big will slightly rise. When the changes to the Mega Millions lottery take effect next Tuesday, the odds to win the jackpot will become 1 out of 290,472,336 instead of the current 1 out of 302,575,350. Tonight's drawing is the last chance to buy in for just $2. Mega Millions drawings are at 11 p.m. EDT on Tuesdays and Fridays. The first drawing after the new Mega Millions rules take effect on Tuesday, April 8. Powerball jackpot is now more than half a billion. When is the next drawing?

The Powerball is officially a half-billion-dollar prize. After no one won Tuesday, the estimated jackpot has grown to $515 million. If someone matches all six numbers in Saturday's Powerball drawing, they can win a one-time cash payment of $242.7 million. Will you be the next person to strike rich with the Powerball? See how to play and the odds of winning big. Nobody won the Powerball jackpot last night. Though no one took home the jackpot, there were a few lucky winners of the lesser prizes. Three people won $1 million and 12 people earned an extra $50,000 from the drawing, including one Tennessean. The $1 million winners were in California, New York and Washington D.C., according to Powerball. The winning Powerball numbers on March 26 were 5, 20, 29, 39, 53 and 6. Powerplay: 3X The next drawing is Saturday, March 29, just after 11 p.m. Powerball drawings are held three times a week, every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Having Powerball or Mega Millions hit the $1 billion mark isn't as uncommon as it used to be. In the last five years, there have been eight jackpots between Mega Millions and Powerball that have gone over the $1 billion mark. And three of those happened in 2023. The first came in January with a $1.53 billion Mega Millions winner. Next, a $1.08 billion Powerball jackpot in July. The latest was a $1.63 billion Mega Million jackpot in August. The highest lottery jackpot came in November 2022 at $2.04 billion. It was the second jackpot over $1 billion that year. Before that the only other times a jackpot hit over a billion was in 2021, 2018 and 2016. If you play Powerball, the chances of winning big are pretty small. The overall odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The overall odds of winning a Powerball prize (across all tiers) are about 1 in 24.9. $2.04 Billion – Nov. 7, 2022 $1.765 Billion – Oct. 11, 2023 $1.586 Billion – Jan. 13, 2016 $1.326 Billion – April 6, 2024 $1.08 Billion – July 19, 2023 $842.4 Million – Jan. 1, 2024 $768.4 Million – March 27, 2019 $758.7 Million – Aug. 23, 2017 $754.6 Million – Feb. 6, 2023 $731.1 Million – Jan. 20, 2021 Want to play Powerball, but not quite sure how it works? Here are some things to know. To play Powerball, you first select five white ball numbers. These five numbers will be between one and 69. Then, pick one "Powerball," or red ball, number. This number will be between one and 26. For an extra dollar, you may choose to "power play," which multiplies all non-grand prize winnings by a factor of 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10. If you match at least one number in the Powerball drawing, you win a prize. This article originally appeared on Nashville Tennessean: Did anyone win Powerball on March 26? When's the next drawing?
