Still swinging strong as Mei Xing fights against time

PETALING JAYA: Women's doubles shuttler Teoh Mei Xing (pic) is the epitome of perseverance. After nearly 17 months together with Go Pei Kee, the world No. 18 pair are now just one step away from matching or even surpassing the highest world ranking of Mei Xing's career. She previously hit a career-high of world No. 17 with Anna Cheong, a partnership that delivered two titles – the Syed Modi International and the Czech Open in 2021 before it ended when Anna suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and later left the national team in September last year. Mei Xing had to start from scratch with Pei Kee, and she admits the climb this time has been far tougher than her earlier rise with Anna. 'I was fortunate as my ranking with Anna went up during the Covid-19 period when not many players were competing, so it was much easier compared to now,' said Mei Xing. 'But my current rise in the rankings came after the Paris Olympics, when there were scratch pairings, some players had stopped competing and others were just returning to the game. So it's not as easy as people might think, nor is it too difficult, but it is still challenging. 'I had to start all over again. Many people had told me to give up badminton, but I thought it over and decided to just do my job and give my best,' said Mei Xing. One of the challenges Mei Xing has faced is the perception that, at 28, she has been in the national team far too long. She silenced some of those critics last month with a strong showing at the Japan Open, ousting world No. 9 pair Kie Nakanishi-Rin Iwanaga of Japan to reach the quarter-finals. 'Some told me to stop because of my age. There were those who said I was old and questioned when I would leave the national team. 'There have been plenty of such voices, but I feel that as long as I can play, I want to keep going, especially since I don't have any serious injuries. 'More importantly, I know myself better because I'm the one stepping onto the court, not those voices,' added Mei Xing. Mei Xing-Pei Kee will join world No. 2 pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah at the World Championships in Paris later this month, and are eagerly awaiting the draw scheduled for next Wednesday.

Mei Xing-Pei Kee combo set to gain traction with expected top 20 ranking

PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Teoh Mei Xing deserves credit for rebuilding her career in the women's doubles with Go Pei Kee after a series of setbacks. Mei Xing was on a promising path with previous partner Anna Cheong but their combination was cruelly cut short after the latter tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in her right knee at the end of 2022. Anna tried to make a comeback with Mei Xing in 2023 but never fully recovered and was forced to retire from the sport. The pair reached a career high No. 17 before Anna's injury and looked capable of breaking into the world's top 10. Without Anna, Mei Xing played in the mixed doubles with Hoo Pang Ron for a short while. It looked like her career was also going to peter out but the 28-year-old refused to give up and has found a new lease of life after combining with Pei Kee last year. Mei Xing is set to return to the top 20 in the world again with the 23-year-old when the official rankings list are updated today. Mei Xing-Pei Kee, who are currently ranked at No. 22, pulled off a sensational victory over Japan's world No. 8 Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi to reach the ongoing China Open quarter-finals in Changzhou. Although the duo then lost to world No. 7 home pair Jia Yifan-Zhang Shuxian, it was still a breakthrough for them after making it into their maiden World Tour Super 1000 last eight. It was also Mei Xing-Pei Kee's first win over a pair ranked in the top 10. Mei Xing hopes the breakthrough will be the start of more for her and Pei Kee. 'This is our best performance this year and we are feeling positive,' said Mei Xing. 'We hope to keep going. Our aim next is to try to win a Super 300 or 500 title.' Mei Xing-Pei Kee's only title so far together is the Malaysia Super 100 which they clinched last October. The pair have an opportunity to build on their performance in China when they compete next in the Super 300 Macau Open which starts on Tuesday. Mei Xing-Pei Kee are out to progress further in the tourney after quarter-final finishes in the Indonesian Masters, Orleans Masters and German Open this year.

China Open breakthrough fires up Pei Kee-Mei Xing for bigger targets

KUALA LUMPUR: Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing 's impressive China Open run has fired up their ambitions to win a World Tour title next, whether on Super 300 or Super 500-level tournaments. The world No. 22 reached their first-ever Super 1000 quarter-final in Changzhou yesterday before falling to world No. 9 Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian. The Chinese pair, featuring an Olympic champion in Yi Fan, proved too strong, winning 21-7, 21-15 in just 34 minutes. Despite the defeat, the Malaysians left Changzhou with the belief that they can now contend on the World Tour. "I think this has been our best performance of the year so far. Of course, it's a bit disappointing that we couldn't keep it going today," said Mei Xing. "But credit to our opponents — they played really well and we just couldn't match their speed. "Mei Xing noted that Yi Fan-Shu Xian's chemistry has grown significantly since pairing up earlier this season. Friday's loss was Pei Kee-Mei Xing's fourth consecutive defeat to the Chinese combination. "Their rotation and shot selection are more mature now. They're faster, stronger and more tactically complete," she said. "Compared to our last matches, their shots and rotations were sharper and harder to deal with. What we can learn from them is definitely their speed, power, and tactical execution." The China Open marks another step forward in what has been a promising season for Pei Kee-Mei Xing. They also reached the quarter-finals at the Indonesia Masters (Super 500), Orleans Masters and German Open (both Super 300) earlier this year. Their only triumph to date remains the Malaysia Super 100 title in October last year. Buoyed by their form, the pair now hope to challenge for a Super 300 or 500 title before year-end. Their next stop is the Macau Open next week, a Super 300 event where they are seeded fourth. With many top pairs skipping Macau, they will be aiming to ride their momentum all the way. "We hope to build on this momentum. Hopefully in the coming months, we can push for a title at a Super 500 or 300 tournament," said Mei Xing.

Deafening cheers of crowd power Mei Xing and Pei Kee to crack China wall

KUALA LUMPUR: The shouts of the fans were deafening and it fuelled women's doubles pair Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee to pull off one of the biggest upsets in the Malaysian Masters. Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee marched into the second round after ousting Olympic Games champion Chen Qingchen of China, who is currently partnering Wang Tingge, with a superb 21-19, 21-19 win in 53 minutes. This wasn't Mei Xing-Pei Kee's first win over the Chinese pair, having also beaten them in February in the second round of the German Open. Mei Xing was thrilled with the win. 'Since we had played them before at the German Open, we had higher expectations this time,' said Mei Xing. 'I think we started off well, but midway through we made some mistakes and got nervous. Fortunately, we managed to overcome it today. Leaping to tall order: Teoh Mei Xing returning a shot as Go Pei Kee looks on in their duel against China's Chen Qingchen-Wang Tingge. 'We were still a bit nervous because she's an Olympic champion and a very experienced player. But we really appreciate the chance to play against her,' said Mei Xing, who appreciated the fans for their support. Mei Xing-Pei Kee will next face another tough hurdle, Qingchen's regular partner Jia Yifan, who is currently teaming up with Zhang Shuxian. The Chinese pair had earlier defeated another young Malaysian duo, Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting, 21-11, 17-21, 21-13 in a 77-minute first round battle.

Olympic champion toppled by Pei Kee-Mei Xing again

THE national women's doubles pair, Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing once again stole the spotlight when they recorded a stylish victory over 2024 Paris Olympic champion, Chen Qing Chen who teamed up with Wang Ting Ge of China to advance to the second round of the Malaysia Masters 2025 at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, today. The first round today saw Pei Kee-Mei Xing, currently ranked 24th in the world, display an energetic performance to defeat the Chinese pair 21-19, 21-19 in 53 minutes, their second victory over the same pair after the 2025 German Open in February. 'This time, we have higher expectations. At the beginning of the match, we started well, but then we started making some mistakes and feeling nervous. However, today, we managed to overcome all that. 'We were a bit nervous too because she (Qing Chen) is still an Olympic champion and very experienced but we really appreciate the opportunity to play against them,' Mei Xing told reporters here today. Asked about the match against the seventh seeds of the tournament, Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian of China in the second round following their victory over national representatives Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting (21-11, 17-21, 21-13), Mei Xing said today's victory was the best tonic to face tomorrow's challenge. Meanwhile, national men's doubles, Muhammad Haikal Nazri-Choong Hon Jian defeated eighth seeds Kittinupong Kedren-Decaphol Puavaranukroh of Thailand, 21-15, 21-18 in the first round action, which lasted 40 minutes. It was their first win after six first-round losses since the China Open in September last year, and it was a boost for Muhammad Haikal, who had previously suffered a thigh muscle injury since last December. 'Of course, I am very happy, but there is still much to improve. The action at home gave us extra motivation. I feel comfortable after returning from injury, but after playing for a long time I start to feel tired because this is my first tournament since returning,' he said. In another action, national men's doubles pair Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong also advanced to the second round after defeating Taiwan's Chiang Chien Wei-Wu Hsuan Yi 21-14, 21-16. However, luck was not on the side of the national professional men's pair, Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub-Tan Wee Kiong, when they lost to Liu Kuang Heng-Yang Po Han from Taiwan, 19-21,15-21.
