Melaka monitors haze-linked illnesses amid poor air quality
MELAKA: The Melaka Health Department is closely monitoring cases of asthma, conjunctivitis, and upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) following unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in parts of the state since Sunday. State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said surveillance data from week 23 (June) to week 29 (ending July 19) showed no significant spike in haze-related illnesses. 'Trends remain stable, but we are maintaining vigilance as a precaution,' he told reporters outside the Melaka State Legislative Assembly sitting at Seri Negeri. Ngwe stated that the state follows the Health Ministry's 2020 Guidelines for Haze-Related Health Management and is prepared to activate the National Haze Action Plan if air quality deteriorates further. He advised vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions, to limit outdoor activities, wear masks, and stay hydrated. 'Seek immediate medical help if experiencing breathing difficulties, cough, eye irritation, or asthma flare-ups,' he added. Further health advisories are available on and - Bernama

Melaka to introduce QR code tags for livestock in 2026
MELAKA: The Melaka government will roll out QR code tags for livestock in 2026 to enhance tracking and reduce accidents caused by stray animals. State Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Committee chairman Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh announced the initiative today at the Melaka State Legislative Assembly. The system will primarily target cattle and buffaloes, allowing authorities to identify owners of animals that wander onto roads and pose risks to motorists. Dr Akmal said manual ear tagging will begin this August as a preliminary step before the digital system is implemented. 'Once in place, this system will allow enforcement action against owners whose animals cause accidents, injuries or fatalities,' he said. The QR code tags will be integrated with Melaka's Digital Village Initiative to create a centralised livestock database. Farmers will undergo training and register their animals with the Department of Veterinary Services (JPV). Responding to concerns about counterfeiting, Dr Akmal assured that each tag will have a unique serial number to prevent duplication. 'If the animal is sold, the owner must notify JPV to update ownership and issue a new QR code,' he added. - Bernama

Melaka to build inland port in Taboh Naning, says CM Ab Rauf
MELAKA: A new inland port in Taboh Naning here is poised to boost regional logistics capability without compromising environmental or public safety, says Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. He said the Melaka Inland Port (MIP), a development plan on 52.89ha of land owned by Perbadanan Melaka (MCORP), is set to become a secure and sustainable logistics hub that will exclude the handling of hazardous materials. "It's being designed to streamline cargo movement via railway, particularly supporting industries in Johor, Negri Sembilan and here. "The port will cater exclusively to container cargo, palletised goods, commercial items in full compliance with environmental, health and safety standards," he said during the second session of the 15th Melaka State Legislative Assembly on Monday (July 21). Ab Rauf said the planned port will focus solely on non-hazardous cargo and its development reflects our commitment to sustainable and responsible infrastructure. He said the project will adopt a full environmental, social and governance (ESG) approach, incorporating green technology, low-carbon rail connectivity, community empowerment and transparent governance. 'It aligns with Melaka's sustainability roadmap and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). "We want this to be a benchmark for future developments that place both community welfare and environmental protection at the forefront,' he added. Phase One of the project, Ab Rauf revealed, will involve a gross development cost (GDC) of RM230.8mil, following a formal agreement signed between MCORP and DS Rail Mobility Sdn Bhd on June 13. He said the MIP is part of a wider development strategy for the MCORP Hi-Tech Park, which spans approximately 2.02ha and the planning for the port began in November last year. He said currently, the company is preparing documentation for planning permission from the local authorities, including an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the port. "Phase One of the project is expected to commence operations by October 2026, featuring components such as a spur line to the KTMB main railway, enclosed warehouses, a container yard, depot services, a Customs inspection centre and an operations office building," he said.

Community leaders pay final respects to adoptive father of well-known social activist Kent Tan
A SON'S GOODBYE: Kent Tan Chow Teng (second from left with while T'Shirt) together his mother (with walking beside) at the late Bobby Tan Say Kuan's wake Jelutong Memorial Park in Batu Berendam, accompanied by state and NGO leaders. MELAKA: Community leaders and members gathered to pay their final respects to Bobby Tan Say Kuan, the adoptive father of well-known social activist and lawyer Kent Tan Chow Teng. Say Kuan passed away peacefully on July 18 at a nursing home in Ayer Keroh here following complications from liver cirrhosis, a condition he was diagnosed with recently. He had celebrated his 67th birthday on July 5 at the home as Kent, as the only son, had no choice but to arrange for nursing care as his mother was preparing for back surgery. Among those who attended the wake on Sunday (July 20) were Melaka State Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Kerk Chee Yee, Melaka entrepreneur development, cooperatives and consumer affairs committee chairman Allex Seah Shoo Chin and former state executive councillor and current chairman of International Labour Care Organisation (ILCO), Datuk M.S. Mahadevan. Overcome with emotion but determined to honour his father's wishes, Kent reminded mourners to find comfort in his father's legacy rather than sorrow in his passing. 'My dad didn't want anyone to be sad and that was his last wish,' he said when interviewed at the wake. Despite the grief, Kent said he was deeply touched by the turnout and the support shown by members of the public. 'He was a modest and kind-hearted man. "If reincarnation truly exists, I would choose to be born as his son in every lifetime,' he added. Kent's mother, Cindy Yeo Inn Inn, 63, shared that her son had insisted on a burial instead of cremation, wanting to uphold traditional filial piety and visit his father's grave each year during Qing Ming, the annual tomb-sweeping festival observed by the Chinese community. 'I told Kent that he may one day have to move to another state or go abroad and might not be able to visit regularly. 'But my son was firm and said he would always make time to remember and honour his father when we decided not to cremate my late husband, she said. Qing Ming holds deep cultural importance among the Chinese community, symbolising remembrance and respect for one's ancestors. Kent, 32, had previously shared with The Star on July 7 how he was adopted after being born to his biological parents in Johor on Aug 10, 1993. His adoptive parents had also been open about the adoption from the beginning, always reminding him that he came into their lives as a divine blessing. A familiar face in Melaka's cultural and social circles, Kent is fluent in seven languages and dialects, including Hainanese, Hokkien, Cantonese, Teochew, Malay, English and Mandarin. He currently serves as chairman of the Heng Leng Lion and Dragon Dance Association and acts as legal adviser to more than 20 temples and social organisations in the state.

Two strict conditions set for Paya Mengkuang pig farmers to resume operations
MELAKA: Operators of pig farms in Paya Mengkuang, Kuala Sungai Baru, Kuala Sungai Baru, must comply with two strict conditions if they wish to resume operations. State Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Committee chairman Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said the main condition was that pig farming activities be conducted under a closed-house system instead of the conventional method used previously. He said another condition was that any pigs brought in from outside Melaka must first obtain approval from the State Veterinary Services Department to ensure the animals were free from disease. 'If the farmers can comply with the conditions set, the state government has no objection to allowing their farms to resume operations. 'We have held a meeting with pig farmers in the area and they are aware of the conditions that have been set,' he told a press conference outside the Melaka State Legislative Assembly today. Elaborating, Dr Muhamad Akmal said he had not received any applications from existing farmers for the construction of farms with a closed-house system, which was required to resume operations. In January 2022, the media reported that the Melaka government had agreed to gazette 35 pig farms in Paya Mengkuang as African Swine Fever (ASF) disease outbreak and control areas. The gazetting was to control the spread of ASF but no specific timeframe had been set.
