BBL 2025-26: Melbourne Stars re-sign Mark Steketee

The 'proven wicket-taker' is back. Experienced seamer Mark Steketee has penned a one-season extension with the Melbourne Stars ahead of the 2025-26 season. Steketee has captured 104 Big Bash wickets at an average of 23 across his 78 appearances with the Stars and Brisbane Heat. Stars high performance manager, and ex-Australian quick, Clint McKay said Steketee was an important piece of the Stars' fast-bowling stocks. 'Full credit to Mark, he worked his way into the tournament and then capitalised on his opportunity in the attack,' McKay said. Melbourne Stars have re-signed fast bowler Mark Steketee. Picture:'He is a proven wicket-taker in the BBL and a fierce competitor and hopefully he can take the momentum and belief from last season into this year. 'We're really pleased with our fast-bowling stocks with Mark complementing Peter Siddle, Tom Curran, Scott Boland and Liam Hatcher.' Steketee said the Stars set the benchmark for the upcoming season with their red-hot run to the finals last campaign. 'I've loved my last couple of years at the Stars and the MCG is an amazing place to play when you're on a roll like the team was last year,' Steketee said. 'Hopefully, the boys can keep that momentum going and get back to the finals again in BBL|15.' Steketee's signing follows the two-year extension given to coach Peter Moores earlier this off-season. The show is over: Maxwell pulls stumps on ODI career

Glenn Maxwell realised it was time to retire from one-day international cricket when his creaking body struggled to deal with a rock-hard outfield at Lahore during Australia's ICC Champions Trophy quest in February. Maxwell is one of Australia's greatest short-form all-rounders but the 36-year-old's body has taken a beating over the years. The hero of Australia's 2023 World Cup win, with an innings considered the greatest of all time, announced his retired from ODIs on Monday after 149 matches, featuring 3990 runs at 33.81 with four centuries and 23 half centuries, and a strike rate of 126.7 - the second highest in ODI cricket behind only West Indian Andre Russell. He also had 77 wickets at 47.32. And that doesn't do justice to the dozens of spectacular moments the man dubbed the Big Show produced. However, Maxwell said he is still available for international T20 matches and domestic T20 tournaments, including the lucrative Indian Premier League and the Big Bash League with his Melbourne Stars. 'My decision to retire from one-day international cricket was probably more so on the back of the first couple of games of the Champions Trophy. I felt like I gave myself a good opportunity to be fit and ready for those games and the first game in Lahore we played on a rock-hard outfield and post that game, I was pretty sore,' Maxwell, a proud Victorian, told the Final Word podcast. 'We were lucky enough to have a washout against South Africa where I had a bit more time to have a bit of rest and get myself ready for the next game. The following game against Afghanistan we fielded for 50 overs on a really, really wet outfield. It was slippery, soft, and I just didn't pull up that well. And I started to think that if I don't have the perfect conditions in 50 over cricket, my body, probably, struggles to get through that. 'It feels like it's a tiring affair just to get through … surviving 50 overs, let alone being at my best through the 50 overs, then going out there and trying to perform with the bat as well. I felt like I was sort of letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions.'

‘World class': Stars' big announcement

It's two more for Peter Moores. The Melbourne Stars have locked the experienced coach in green for a further two years. Moores took the Stars to their first BBL finals campaign in five attempts despite starting the season 0-5 last summer. The Stars finished the season with five consecutive wins and were largely viewed as the championship favourite before they were eliminated in the first final. Moores, 62, has a vast coaching portfolio, including two stints as head coach of England. He is looking forward to pairing with captain Marcus Stoinis again and won't be 'putting a limit on' what they can accomplish in 2025-26. 'I'm absolutely thrilled to sign on for another two years,' Moores said. 'I've already experienced some incredible moments with the club and there was no better place to be last summer than the MCG when we got on a roll. 'It was a great reminder of what this club and our members and fans are capable of. 'I was so impressed with Marcus's leadership last year, and I expect he will only grow in that role again in BBL|15. 'Our list is in a really good place, and we've got a great opportunity to strengthen a couple of key areas in the upcoming draft. 'I'm not putting a limit on what we can all achieve together.' Newly appointed general manager Max Abbott says Moores' ability to maintain belief in the group last season despite a poor start is proof of his leadership. 'The feedback from all parts of the organisation has been overwhelmingly positive in the way Peter led the group as coach over the last two seasons,' Abbott said. 'You don't come back from a 0-5 start to make the finals without leadership in the dressing room and that is a testament to the way Peter was able to maintain camaraderie and belief within the playing group to turn the season around. 'Peter is a world-class coach and by maintaining continuity, we're confident the club can build on the momentum generated in the back-half of the season to hit the ground running in BBL15.' The Stars have a later pick in the draft this season and are set to be without Englishman Ben Duckett, who will be tied up on Ashes duties.
