Settling for Silver: Mustangs fall in Centennial Cup Final
The Calgary Canucks won the 2025 Centennial Cup in Calgary on May 18, 2025. (Source: Centennial Cup) It's silver, again. The Melfort Mustangs second straight appearance at the Centennial Cup National Junior A Championship tournament ended with a 7-2 loss to the Calgary Canucks on Sunday night. It's the first time in 30-years that the host team has won the tournament. Calgary is the 12th host team to win since the tournament format began in 1985. 'We went from coming to the rink and hoping to win to 'we're going to win,' Canucks captain Bowen Singleton told Hockey Canada after the game. 'It's everything i've dreamed of.' The Mustangs finished second in Group B in the round robin, just one point behind the eventual champions with a record of 2-1-1-0. The Canucks struck first on a goal by Rhett Melynk, who tucked a loose puck past Mustangs goaltender Kristian Coombs on the powerplay. Ashton Paul drew the Mustangs even before the period was out. It was the second period where momentum really swung. The Canucks connected for three goals (Hayden Feschner, Landon Pappas and Nolan DuPont). It proved to be too big of a hole for the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) champions to climb out of. Jayden Joly scored just 1:18 into the final frame to chase Coombs from the crease. Madden Mulawka made four stops in a closing effort. The Mustangs have become the second team to lose in the title game in back-to-back seasons joining the Carleton Place Canadians. Zayden Sadlemeyer scored with 14 minutes to go but it was too little too late to mount a comeback. The Mustangs fell 7-2 to the Canucks who celebrated in front of a happy hometown crowd. The Mustangs played the stretch of the tournament without their leading scorer Reilley Kotai (39 regular season goals, 77 points) due to injury. The host team for the 2026 Centennial Cup has yet to be named.

2025 Centennial Cup: Melfort Mustangs ready to give it another go
Article content It was oh-so-close-but-no-cigar-(or-Cup) a year ago for the Melfort Mustangs. Article content They're back at the Centennial Cup national junior A hockey championship for a second straight year. Article content The Mustangs — who will open the tournament Thursday night against the host Calgary Canucks — lost the 2024 national final 1-0 to the Collingwood, Ont. Blues. Article content They also reached the championship final in 1996, and came up short in the 2015 event. Article content Article content Is this going to be the year when the Mustangs finally win a national title, which has eluded them despite a handful of appearances? Article content Article content 'Ah, I don't know — we will see,' says Mustangs head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins, who played in the 1996 national final under then-head coach Kevin Dickie. Article content 'It'll be really good (competition). It'll be tough. There'll be some good teams. The Alberta teams will be among the best. Calgary looks really good. We have a good pool. It'll be challenging.' Article content Melfort finds itself in Group B with the host Calgary Canucks (Alberta Junior Hockey League), Rockland (Ont.) Nationals (Central Canada Hockey League), Valleyfield (Que.) Braves (Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League) and Edmundston (N.B.) Blizzard (Maritimes Hockey League). Article content The Mustangs finished first overall in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League this season with a 46-8-0-2 record, outscoring opponents 221-123 along the way. Article content They went on to win another Canterra Seeds Cup while repeating as SJHL champions. Article content Article content 'Unbelievable group,' praised Blevins. 'They really deserve it. I like our depth. I like how everyone's bought in, played the right way and in their roles. I really feel they've been able to re-set and respond faster than maybe others that I've had in recent years. Article content Article content 'I like the mental toughness of this group. We seem to bounce back whenever we need to.' Article content The Mustangs return to the national stage with a rebuilt roster after losing key performers like goalie James Venne, Chase Friedt-Mohr, Leith Olafson, Aidyn Hutchinson, Clay Steeva, Ryan Duguay and Logan Cox. Article content 'I think the mix of the guys returning from last year that know what it takes and know how to play the right way, and the new pieces who came in and adjusted and adapted, they did a fantastic job playing with our identity. It all gelled. Our culture and our chemistry is the highest I've seen in the last couple of years. It's a group that bought in to playing the right way.'
