EasyJet suspends pilot after ‘drunk and naked' incident at luxury hotel

An easyJet flight captain has been suspended pending an investigation after claims that he wandered naked around a luxury hotel at the end of an all-night drinking session. The pilot, who has not been named, was seen without any clothes in the reception of a five-star hotel on the Atlantic resort island of Cape Verde early last Tuesday morning. According to the Sun, which first reported the story, the captain had been drinking at the bar of the Meliá Dunas Beach Resort and Spa since the previous evening. It quoted witnesses who claimed to have seen the man stumbling in a 'paralytic' state. At 2.30am he reportedly removed all his clothes and walked into the reception area, before moving to the gym and spa. The man had been due to fly passengers back to Gatwick from Cape Verde on Wednesday 6 August. After the incident in the hotel, he was grounded by the airline and a replacement pilot was called up. An easyJet source told the Sun: 'Anyone who saw the pilot cavorting naked in the early hours on the day before a flight would not dream of getting on a plane with him at the controls.' An easyJet spokesperson said: 'As soon as we were made aware, the pilot was immediately stood down from duty, in line with our procedures, pending an investigation. 'The safety of our passengers and crew is easyJet's highest priority.' EasyJet's flights from Gatwick to Cape Verde are its longest from England, at 2,332 nautical miles. The flights are scheduled to last about six hours.

EasyJet pilot suspended ‘after stripping naked in a bar'

An easyJet pilot who reportedly walked around a luxury hotel drunk and naked has been suspended. The unnamed captain was set to fly holidaymakers back to the UK from Cape Verde, West Africa, before his passengers recognised him as their pilot. The man arrived at the five-star Melia Dunas Beach Resort and Spa, Cape Verde on August 4 and began drinking until the early hours, The Sun reported. At 2.30am, while in a 'paralytic' state, he is reported to have removed his clothes before walking into the hotel's reception area and then into its gym and spa. The pilot was set to fly passengers back to Gatwick the following afternoon on August 6, but he was stood down from duty. The airline had to find a new pilot as a result. A source told the paper: 'This was breathtakingly unprofessional behaviour from the pilot. It was the height of stupidity. His career with easyJet is doomed.' Another said: 'EasyJet managers couldn't believe what they were being told but took immediate action after complaints were raised at the highest level. 'Anyone who saw the pilot cavorting naked in the early hours on the day before a flight would not dream of getting on a plane with him at the controls. 'He was so drunk that you wouldn't have put him in charge of a toy aeroplane, never mind the real thing with hundreds of passengers.' An easyJet spokesman said: 'As soon as we were made aware, the pilot was immediately stood down from duty, in line with our procedures, pending an investigation. The safety of our passengers and crew is easyJet's highest priority.' Flights from Gatwick to Cape Verde take around six hours, and are easyJet's longest from England at 2,332 nautical miles. Tighter rules on pilots drinking It is not the first time a pilot has been caught drinking. In March last year, another drunk airline pilot, who was found with two bottles of Jägermeister as he prepared to take control of a transatlantic flight, was jailed for 10 months. He was found to be almost two and a half times over the alcohol limit, hours before he was due to fly a Boeing 767 from Edinburgh to New York. In recent years, other airlines have tightened up their rules on when pilots can have their last drink before flying. In 2019, United Airlines made it mandatory for pilots to wait more than 12 hours before entering the cockpit after drinking. It came after two United pilots were jailed after reporting to duty while over the limit before flying to Newark in 2016.

‘Drunk' easyJet pilot ‘seen stripping off' at hotel bar

An easyJet pilot has been suspended after allegedly being found drunk and naked at a luxury hotel in Cape Verde. The captain was scheduled to operate a flight from the West African island nation back to the United Kingdom the day after the incident. According to The Sun, the pilot arrived at the five-star Melia Dunas Beach Resort and Spa on 4 August. He reportedly engaged in a drinking session at a bar that extended into the early hours of 5 August. It was at 2.30am that he was 'seen stripping off' and proceeded to walk through the reception area before entering the gym and spa, the newspaper claimed. The Sun did not name the pilot in its reporting. It claimed that 'stunned' easyJet passengers recognised the 'paralytic' captain and raised the alarm. He had been due to operate a flight back to Gatwick approximately 36 hours later, on the afternoon of 6 August, but easyJet confirmed a replacement pilot was found. An easyJet spokesman said: 'As soon as we were made aware, the pilot was immediately stood down from duty, in line with our procedures, pending an investigation. 'The safety of our passengers and crew is easyJet's highest priority.' EasyJet's flights from Gatwick to Cape Verde are its longest from England, at 2,332 nautical miles. The flights are scheduled to last about six hours. Flight crew drinking incidents In 2018, armed police arrested a British Airways pilot just before takeoff at Gatwick after the cabin crew raised fears he may have been drunk. Attendants on the flight, which was bound for Mauritius, called 999 after allegedly smelling alcohol on one of the officers' breath. In 2019, a Delta pilot was arrested on suspicion of being drunk while onboard a full plane ready to take off. He was arrested at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport when officers smelt alcohol on his breath. And in 2023, a British Airways flight attendant was arrested 'on suspicion of performing an aviation function when over the prescribed limit for alcohol'.
