Warning as 17 weeks of travel disruption expected when huge project gets underway

Drivers in Melksham and surrounding areas have been warned ahead of a 17-week project to overhaul the water network that will see traffic measures on the A365. Wessex Water is urging road users to consider the time needed for their journeys when a £500,000 investment to improve the water supply network near Melksham gets under way in September. A 17-week project to replace two sections of ageing water main on the A365 Bath Road, east of Bowerhill and within Sells Green, will begin on Monday, September 8. An initial phase of two-way traffic lights will be in place on a short section of the road at Sells Green, just east of Spout Lane, until Friday, September 19, with nearby bus stops suspended. A Wessex Water spokesperson said: 'This is an essential investment to improve water supply in the area and we're carrying out to try and reduce disruption as much as possible. 'The project will be completed under temporary traffic lights which, at certain locations, will be manually controlled to help reduce congestion and delays. 'We have written to customers, businesses and schools in the area to inform them about the work and apologise for any inconvenience caused. The project is expected to be completed by Friday 19 December.''

Warehouse decision deferred for further surveys

A decision on whether to allow a warehouse to be built on agricultural land has been deferred. Family-run wholesaler Gompels Healthcare Ltd has applied for permission to build on the site near Bath Road in Melksham, Wiltshire. But the plans have attracted opposition from local residents. About 400 people have commented on the application on Wiltshire Council's website, with the majority opposing it. The council's planning committee decided at a meeting on Tuesday that further ecological surveys were required to consider the habitat, noise and flood risks presented by the application. More news stories for Wiltshire Listen to the latest news for Wiltshire A petition signed by 45 people stated they were objecting because of the planned number of visits to the warehouse each day, while there were also concerns about road safety, particularly near Melksham Oak School. Resident Michelle McAlinden said it would bring "more traffic and noise, and make life worse for people who live nearby". However, a spokesperson for Gompels said the site was "the only viable option" and that the building would be "far less disruptive than a housing development". Part of the site is within a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). In addition to the warehouse, the application also seeks permission to build offices and a parking area. West Coast Eagles champion Jeremy McGovern reveals messages of support from Melbourne forward Jake Melksham

Jeremy McGovern has revealed Melbourne's Jake Melksham, who was involved in the collision that led to his career-ending concussion, reached out to the West Coast champion over his retirement. McGovern was awarded a free kick in the round eight clash at Optus Stadium after Melksham pushed him into a marking contest. It resulted in McGovern clashing heads with Demon Harrison Petty, with both players concussed in the incident and placed in protocols. It would ultimately be the Eagles premiership defender's final game, with McGovern retiring on medical grounds following a recommendation from the AFL's concussion panel. The 33-year-old revealed he 'heard from Melksham straight after the game' and had remained in contact since. McGovern officially announced his retirement on Friday. 'He (Melksham) was extremely thoughtful and caring about what was going on,' McGovern told SEN. 'I've been chatting to him over the last few weeks, to be honest. He's been super.' Melsksham was cleared of any wrongdoing by the Match Review Officer over the collision, who found 'it was not reasonably foreseeable that McGovern and Petty would make contact in the manner that occurred'. Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin also defended Melksham's actions post-match, stating he was contesting the ball and the actions of West Coast defender Reuben Ginbey had also contributed to the collision. McGovern held no ill-will toward Melksham over the incident, saying he 'made it pretty clear to him' that the decision was made to protect his long-term health following multiple head knocks across his 197-game career. 'This is a lot of things that have happened before that,' he said. 'He (Melksham) seemed like a ripper, did shoot me a message.' Among the other messages of support was Brisbane co-captain and star defender Harris Andrews, McGovern revealed. 'I've always admired the way he's played, so that was nice,' he said. 'And then obviously past players and mates and people you didn't even know you had in your phone... so many people (reached out). 'And that's why I love footy. That's what footy is all about. Just that comradery and mateship and friendships. 'It's just nice for everyone to shoot you a message and say that they've watched you and enjoyed your career.'

Music events give Wiltshire grassroots sports clubs a boost

A growing number of grassroots sports clubs claim that staging a large music festival can be a vital source of extra Rugby Club is hosting a family music festival, CorFest, on 21 June, to raise funds. And the first Wiltshire Throwback Festival is being hosted by Melksham Town Football Club and Melksham Rugby Club at Oakfield Stadium from 20-21 June."From a football club perspective, we're probably talking about the festival making 15 to 20% of our (annual) income," said Melksham Town FC chairman, Adam Young. "It will be a major bonus to get this in the summer when we don't have as many people coming through the gates."Mr Young said they relied heavily on sponsorship for most of their income and "every penny" counted when running a small club."It's something that we've wanted to do, we've had a couple of smaller events here in the past, but to have 3,000-5,000 people at the site is incredible," he told BBC Wiltshire. Melksham Rugby Club chairman, Aaron Brailey, said: "It's for the community, for the rugby club, for the football club, so we're genuinely really excited for it."It's incredibly difficult as, historically, volunteers have always run the club, but we have aspirations to grow and we've got to take advantage of opportunities like this." Corsham Rugby Club is hosting CorFest for the third year running on 21 June. The family event raises money for the club, but also local charities, including Dorothy House Hospice and Corsham Food Bank. Chairman, Jim Williams, said: "Being a volunteer-led club, we like to help various local charities and it furthers our engagement with the local community, which is a priority for us."It also brings in much-needed funds, without events like this, the club would struggle to fund things like kit, coaching, maintenance and pitch repairs." The Wiltshire Throwback Festival is expected to attract up to 3,000 people per day, with the line-up including Boney M's Liz Mitchell, So Solid Crew, and Tinchy Menghini, co-director of festival organisers Jarboom, said after the licensing application was approved: "We're ecstatic, especially considering the amount of work we've put in to satisfy the authorities."We're already in the early planning stages for year two," he added.
