Veteran analyst warns major trouble ahead for markets
Meltem Demirors, crypto influencer, founder, and partner at Crucible Capital, has issued a pessimistic forecast for digital asset markets following this week's relief rally. On March 26, Demirors posted on X that while inflows were solid in 2024 due to ETF hype and what she describes as the "Trump Pump," the conditions behind the scenes for the market are far from rosy. "Are we back?" Demirors opened with "Not so fast," referencing a recent brightening of spirits about a potential rebound in the crypto space. She pointed out that even though ETF flows injected capital earlier in the year, Q1 has been challenging, with losses being realized by short-term holders selling. She said, "It's been a rough Q1 for ETF flows. The sell-off was driven by short-term holders selling at a loss. Let's see what comes out in the Q1 13F filings—our mercenaries may have been top buyers after all. Love that for us!" The macroeconomic backdrop is adding to the pressure, believes Demirors. Amid stocks pivoting below 200-day moving averages and rates in the sights of politicians looking to push for a decline, Demirors views price action as little more than a brief respite driven by retail traders and algorithmic CTAs. Funding rates are still not excessive, which she views as "constructive," but demands seem feeble. Implied volatility in options markets is "very depressed," and Bitcoin volumes are lower than before election time. "We'll be sideways for a bit," she said, referring to Mt. Gox distribution and the absence of strong catalysts. Demirors was also keen to call attention to the continued impact of $800 million worth of token unlocks on the market every week, saying, "Show me the bid. Show me liquid funds who haven't been carried out." Ending bluntly, she reminded traders: "A token doesn't care whether you like it or not. It doesn't even think about you at all." The market may be rallying now, but according to Demirors, the real test is yet to come. At press time, the global crypto market capitalization sits at $2.84 trillion, down 0.02% in the last 24 hours.
