500 km network of water pipelines yet to be laid under Jalasiri project in Mangaluru, says KUIDFC official

Approximately 500 km of the 1,260 km-long network of pipelines remain to be laid under the ongoing Jalasiri drinking water supply project in the city, according to an official of the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC). The official told the quarterly Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) Review Committee meeting here on Monday that a 760 km long network of pipelines has been laid under the project. 'We may take a few more days beyond the target month of November 2025 to complete the project,' the official said. Ivan D'Souza, MLC, accused the KUIDFC personnel of irrationally digging roads in the city and causing inconvenience to motorists. A member of the committee, Melwin D'Souza, said that some of the overhead tanks constructed under the project were leaking. When an official pointed out that nearly 40% of the sanctioned posts of land surveyors were lying vacant, and this had affected the ongoing 'Podi' work, the Minister said that Revenue Minister Krishna Byregowda was aware of the problem. Mr. Byregowda is keen on completing the survey in Belthangady, Sullia and Puttur taluks and resolving issues related to land records in these taluks, he said. The Minister said that counselling related to the compulsory rural posting of MBBS and postgraduate intern doctors is under way. All vacant posts of MBBS doctors and specialists in the Dakshina Kannada will be filled shortly. When MLAs pointed out the poor condition of some village roads, including the Uppinangady-Kuppetti road and the damage to the bridge on the Kalkuja-Palimaru road, Mr. Rao directed Mr. Darshan to submit a list of village roads where grants need to be released for immediate repair. Deputy Conservator of Forest Anthony S. Mariyappa stated that, according to the department's working plan, Acacia trees have been removed from 3,600 acres of forest land in Dakshina Kannada since 2023. The Acacia trees will be removed in 1,250 acres of forest land this year, he said. Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers Union Managing Director Vivek said the Union is contemplating installing a silage baling unit to provide silage to milk-producing farmers of Dakshina Kannada. Backward Classes Welfare district officer said a hostel each for boys and girls has been sanctioned for the district for BC students studying in Medical, Engineering and other professional courses.
