Scooter driver critical, passenger dead, after crashing on Florida Turnpike: FHP

A passenger on a scooter driving on Florida's Turnpike in Broward County Saturday died after becoming lodged underneath a van the small vehicle collided with Saturday afternoon, and the driver remains in critical condition, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The crash happened shortly before 3 p.m. in the southbound lanes at mile marker 55, according to the FHP. The driver of the Yongfu scooter, whom troopers say is a 21-year-old man from Miami, was in the center lane and changed lanes into the path of a 2017 Ford Transit van driven by a 27-year-old man from Davie, FHP Lt. Indiana Miranda said. The front of the van hit the rear of the scooter, and both the scooter driver and passenger — as well as the scooter — were trapped beneath the moving vehicle, Miranda said. The van driver, who has not been named, pulled to the inside lane, where the passenger became dislodged, according to the FHP. The van driver pulled over to the shoulder with the scooter and driver still stuck underneath, Miranda said. Paramedics took the scooter driver, who has not been named, to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he remained in critical condition Wednesday, Miranda said. His passenger, who has also not been identified, died on the scene, according to the FHP. The van driver was not injured, Miranda said. Troopers are still investigating the crash. Driving a scooter with an engine smaller than 50 cubic centimeters is illegal. The size of the Yongfu involved in the crash was not immediately known.

Teen allegedly ‘showing off' new car in Pembroke Pines crash that killed 2

A 17-year-old boy is facing charges as an adult in connection with a crash in Pembroke Pines earlier this year that killed two people, court records show. Albert Oswaldo Yanez Quintana, of Sunrise, was booked into the Paul Rein Detention Facility on Thursday on seven charges. Yanez Quintana is accused of speeding in his 2019 Dodge Charger near the area of North Dykes Road and Northwest 12th Street in Pembroke Pines just after 6:30 p.m. Feb. 14 when he crashed into a 2018 Ford Fusion at nearly twice the posted speed limit of 45 mph, according to a probable cause affidavit. The driver of the Ford tried to make a left turn onto Northwest 12th Street when Yanez Quintana smashed into its right side at about 85 mph, the affidavit said. The force ripped the Ford in half and ejected one of the two people inside. That person, whose name is redacted in the affidavit, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other person from the Ford, whose name is also redacted, was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital and died on Feb. 22, the affidavit said. Pembroke Pines Police identified them only as 'an elderly man and an elderly woman' in a statement announcing the arrest on Thursday. Yanez Quintana and his three passengers were taken to hospitals, the affidavit said. One passenger had a fractured shoulder while Yanez Quintana and another passenger had minor injuries. The third passenger needed extensive physical therapy for damage done to his spine. Police received a search warrant for the event data recorder in the Dodge a few days later and found that the car was traveling at 85 mph less than one second before the crash, according to the affidavit. Five seconds before the crash, the Dodge was recorded with 'the accelerator pedal depressed at one hundred percent.' If Yanez Quintana had been driving at the speed limit, the Ford Fusion would have had a few extra seconds to cross the intersection and avoid the crash, the affidavit said. Yanez Quintana and three others, whose names are redacted, were summoned to give official statements in March. They all told police they met at Westfork Plaza, in the 15000 block of Pines Boulevard, before the crash, the affidavit said. One witness told police Yanez Quintana was driving erratically when leaving the plaza, 'intent on showing off his new car and what speeds it was capable of,' the affidavit said. Yanez Quintana swerved around slower cars on the road as he accelerated at dangerous speeds, the affidavit said, seriously injuring some of his passengers and causing the deaths of the man driving the Ford and his passenger. He is facing two counts of vehicular homicide, one count of reckless driving causing serious bodily injury and four counts of reckless driving with damage to person or property, jail records show. He remained in the jail as of Friday afternoon.

Boyfriend arrested in Houston after fatal Hialeah shooting

MIAMI - A man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend in Hialeah was arrested in Houston alongside two others who police say helped him evade capture. Elijah Clarke, 19, was taken into custody Tuesday by Houston police, two days after investigators say he shot 20-year-old Delilah Ruiz during an argument over money at her home on NW 63 Court Circle. Clarke fled the scene in a black Lexus IS350 driven by his friend, Christopher Valdes, authorities said. Ruiz was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Deadly Miramar Walgreens shooting was case of mistaken conversation, police say

MIRAMAR - A case of mistaken conversation may have led to a deadly shooting at a drug store in Miramar on Monday. The shooting occurred just before noon at the Walgreens in the 2400 block of S.W. 101st Avenue, near Miramar Boulevard and Palm Avenue. Miramar Police Chief Delrish Moss said the incident stemmed from an argument between the two men inside the store. "This was a dispute between two customers, and they got into an argument," Moss said. "One of those customers pulled out a gun and shot the other person." Anthony Souvenir, 27, who was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in critical condition, and later died from his injuries. According to Souvenir's family, Monday was his birthday. His father said the day began with joy, as the family sang "Happy Birthday" and celebrated. Souvenir later went to Walgreens to withdraw money but never returned. According to Miramar police, surveillance video from the store shows accused gunman Jaime Taylor, 28, walk in around 11:20 a.m. He was on his phone as he went to the front register. A few minutes later, a woman later identified as Souvenir's girlfriend and the father of her child walked in carrying their baby. About a minute later Souvenir walked in. Souvenir's girlfriend told police she heard him arguing with Taylor. She said at one point she heard Taylor say "I'm not even (expletive) talking to you, I'm on the (expletive) phone." She said as they continued to exchange words Souvenir walked toward Taylor. She told police she tried to get him to back down. As the two men argued, she said Taylor pulled out a gun, pointed it at Souvenir and began shooting. He then ran out of the store. The woman said Souvenir then pulled out his own gun and tried to go after Taylor. She said he collapsed on the ground before he reached the front door. According to the store manager, while she was helping Taylor at the front desk area, he was on the phone. When Souvenir walked in, she said, he believed that Taylor was talking to him when he was actually talking to someone on the phone. She said that's when they began to exchange words and then Taylor shot at Souvenir. According to police, while Souvenir ran out of the store after the shooting, he did return and turn himself in. During questioning, Taylor said he had gone to the store to load money onto a CashApp. He said he noticed Souvenir's girlfriend walk in, but didn't pay too much attention to her. A short time later, Souvenir walked in and said to him, "You're looking too hard," according to Taylor. Taylor told investigators that Souvenir then walked away but turned around when he heard comments he made to his cousin on the phone. He said that's when they started exchanging words. When Taylor told Souvenir that he had a gun, he said Souvenir replied "I see you got one, I got one too." Taylor told police at that point he feared that Souvenir was either going to fight him or shoot him, so he pulled his gun and pointed it to the side. He said when he saw Souvenir reach into his backpack, reportedly for the gun, he shot at the bag and ran away. He said he returned to the store a short time later and informed officers that he was involved in the shooting. He was arrested and has been charged with murder without premeditation.
