Clemson football's ranking in 2025 preseason AP Top 25 poll revealed
Only 19 days remain until the Clemson Tigers take the field on Aug. 30 for their much-hyped 2025 college football season opener against the LSU Tigers at Memorial Stadium. After the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll was unveiled last week, many argued that Clemson deserved to be ranked higher than No. 6 Monday saw release of the preseason AP Top 25 poll, and the media members who make up the AP's poll agreed with that sentiment. Clemson debuted at No. 4 in the AP poll, one spot below the reigning national champion Ohio State Buckeyes at No. 3 and one spot ahead of the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs. Clemson was ranked ahead of two teams that landed in front of the Tigers in the Coaches Poll: Georgia and Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish were No. 6 in Monday's AP poll after being ranked fifth by the coaches. The Texas Longhorns earned the top spot in the AP poll, while Penn State was ranked No. 2. Besides Clemson, two other ACC teams cracked the preseason AP poll. The Miami Hurricanes debuted at No. 10, and the SMU Mustangs were ranked No. 16. Clemson faces SMU on Oct. 18 in Death Valley. Two opponents on Clemson's nonconference schedule were ranked in the top 15. LSU debuted at No. 9 in the AP poll, with rival South Carolina ranked No. 13 -- the same spot both teams landed in the Coaches Poll. Clemson was ranked No. 14 in last year's preseason AP poll. Behind Cade Klubnik's stellar 2024 season that included 3,639 passing yards and 36 touchdowns to only five interceptions, the Tigers went 10-4 and won the ACC for the ninth time under Dabo Swinney to earn a trip to the 12-team College Football Playoff. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney shares his thoughts on the first scrimmage of fall camp
Clemson football held its first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday inside Memorial Stadium, and Dabo Swinney came away calling it one of the most competitive first scrimmages he's seen in years. The Tigers' head coach said both sides traded blows throughout the day. The defense set the early tone with big plays from defensive backs Misun Kelley and Branden Strozier, each coming up with an interception. Kelley returned his pick for a touchdown, while Strozier's came in the red zone. 'The offense battled back and made some big plays,' Swinney said. 'Probably one of the more competitive scrimmages we've had in a while in a first scrimmage. I thought there were moments where I was mad at the offense, then I was at the defense, then happy with the offense, and then happy with the defense, and then pissed at both of them. That is good when you have both sides that really competed.' Quarterbacks Cade Klubnik and Christopher Vizzina were responsible for the turnovers but bounced back to finish strong. Vizzina also stepped in with the first-team offense during a sudden-change drill, leading a three-play touchdown drive. The two-hour scrimmage covered red zone work, short-yardage situations, goal-line sets, and live special teams. Swinney said the punters, Robert Gunn III, Jack Smith, and Will McCune, are in a 'three-horse race' but must improve. 'We tried to put a lot of pressure on those guys today. There was some good, but I need them to be consistently good, not occasionally great,' he said. Swinney highlighted several standouts. Tight end Ian Schieffelin, still adjusting from basketball, is 'getting better every day.' Running backs earned a 'plus' for their productivity. Vic Burley made his presence felt with multiple sacks, while Jeremiah Alexander and a deep group of linebackers continued trending upward. Freshman Tristan Smith caught a touchdown in the back of the end zone, Chase Byrd showed his speed after the catch, and T.J. Moore hauled in a highlight grab. Backup quarterbacks Trent Pearman and Chris Denson also performed well, with Swinney calling Denson 'explosive.' The young safeties are 'arrow up,' according to Swinney, as Khalil Barnes works back from a sore hamstring. Kelley and Shelton Lewis split nickel duties, with Kelley also getting work at corner. Kicker Nolan Hauser went 2-for-3 on field goals, missing one, Swinney said, that was '100 percent on him.' The head coach was pleased with the tackling overall and said there were no glaring misses. One player who didn't participate was freshman defensive tackle Amare Adams, who sprained his ankle in practice Friday. 'He'll be back soon,' Swinney said. Clemson will hold its second and final scrimmage of camp later this month. The Big Ten is not lacking for historic college football venues. The Big House, The Horseshoe, the Rose Bowl and even Wrigley Field are among the home fields Big Ten teams will play on during the 2025 season. But it was one of the league's newest members that currently has the best-reviewed stadium in the Big Ten. Nebraska's Memorial Stadium, which opened in 1923, had the best average rating among Big Ten venues, according to an analysis of more than 5,000 reviews doled out by users on Google, Yelp and Tripadvisor. Memorial Stadium was slotted as the eighth-best Big Ten stadium in that exercise. But most of the best stadiums in the Big Ten weren't separated by much in terms of ratings, with 10 venues registering a combined average score of more than 4.6 stars out of 5. Michigan Stadium, Ohio Stadium, Penn State's Beaver Stadium, Iowa's Kinnick Stadium and Oregon's Autzen Stadium were among the other top-rated places to watch Big Ten football.
