Willy Chavarria on some of his finest celebrity fashion looks

Last month, award-winning Latino fashion designer Willy Chavarria brought his renegade sensibilities to the runway in France, finally making his long-awaited debut at Men's Fashion Week in Paris with his fall collection, 'Tarántula.' Chavarria tells the story of American fashion through a Chicano lens, creating now-distinctive oversize, sculptural silhouettes that pull from various eras of Mexican American style, from sharply angular zoot suits to blue-collar workwear. Since launching his eponymous brand in 2015, the Fresno-born designer's ability to weave together culture, politics and identity into the fabric of his clothes has made him one of the buzziest designers working in fashion today. At one point during 'Tarántula,' models walked down the runway to the sound of Bishop Mariann Edger Budde, whose sermon at the Inaugural Prayer Service included a direct plea to President Trump that he 'have mercy' upon immigrants and LGBTQ+ people. By drawing from his Mexican and Irish American roots, as well as his life as a proud gay man, Chavarria flaunts his progressive principles while creating new and novel experiences on the runway. It's one reason why, despite his rising profile, Chavarria still relies heavily on street-casting for his shows, finding everyday faces to model his collection. 'I like for us to see the magnificent beauty within ourselves, especially those of us who are used to seeing a stereotypically negative portrayal,' he tells De Los over email. There were more than a few familiar faces to be found on the runway in Paris, including Becky G, J Balvin and Tokischa — just a few of the high-profile stars the designer has worked with. Chavarria understands the power of visibility, and he's selective in who he chooses to work with, knowing that their celebrity will help amplify his message. 'The WILLY CHAVARRIA brand is a belief in human dignity and a right to identity,' he says. 'When a celebrity chooses to wear the brand, it's not just to look and feel sickening, but to share alignment with a belief in social justice. I've tended to attract the people I am attracted to, and we often become friends. I like to dress people who have worked hard to get where they are, and who are bold in their personal identity.' Here are some of the celebs who have boldly represented Chavarria's brand on runways, red carpets or just out on the town. The singer, a longtime supporter of Chavarria, was almost unrecognizable in her vampy, chola-inspired makeup look, sporting a 'Sad Mami' tank top as part of the 'Tarántula' show. In an Instagram post after the show, she wrote, '[Willy Chavarria] was one of the first designers to move me to tears…few years ago I sat in a New York City church behind Madonna as the sounds of my childhood played while the models, who looked like my family, walked down the aisle. Willy's fashion made me believe that I belonged. That there was actually someone who cared enough about us to create & dedicate art to our culture. Chicano culture.' With their shared West Coast pride, it was almost inevitable that these two would link up. Chavarria first worked with the rapper on his Big Steppers Tour in 2023, and later dressed him for the viral sensation 'Not Like Us' music video. Most recently, the duo announced a Super Bowl-themed capsule collection ahead of upcoming halftime performance. 'Kendrick performing is so monumental given his voice on the empowerment of brown and Black people and I love his pure L.A. heart,' Chavarria said in an interview with WWD. 'Working with Kendrick is an important cultural moment for the two of us. We both have an unwavering voice when it comes to our people.' The buzz around Chavarria skyrocketed when Madonna sat front row at his spring menswear show during New York Fashion Week in 2022. Since then, he's worked with the legendary singer on numerous occasions. The 'Pose' actor and activist sported an expertly tailored funeral coat on the 'Tarántula' runway — a fitting, dramatic choice for the show's setting at the American Cathedral. 'It's difficult to integrate meaningfulness in fashion culture, it can be unkind, at times hostile, and unintentional,' they wrote on Instagram. '[I'm] grateful for Willy's creative capacity to create garments that hold us in ways that engage our dignity, as opposed to just our egos.' By now, Eilish has become known for her oversize looks, but the 'What Was I Made For?' singer still managed to stun when she hit the 2024 Golden Globe Awards wearing a full Willy Chavarria fit that included a black blazer, wide-leg khakis and a black necktie. She doubled up with another of Chavarria's busines- casual-inspired looks at the Grammys a month later. The actress has become a familiar fixture in the front row of Chavarria's shows, and has been seen on the red carpet and out on the town wearing his designs. 'There's an element of flamboyance, glamour and street that really matches my soul,' she said of his work in an interview with Elle. The Colombian singer has been a friend (and official muse) of Chavarria's for years — so it was only natural that Balvin would pull double duty at the designer's latest show. Not only did Balvin model one of Chavarria's iconic suits, but he also gave an intermission performance. Back in 2022, the Puerto Rican superstar modeled a satin set from Chavarria in a story for Vogue, and later wore a floor-length black coat from the designer's Fall 2023 collection when he graced the cover of Time the following year. The tennis superstar turned heads when she arrived at the 2023 U.S. Open wearing an Alaïa dress and a Chavarria blazer. After making a surprise appearance as a guest at Chavarria's 2024 New York Fashion Week Show, the singer upped his game this year and walked the runway wearing an oversize plaid button-down and a white cowboy hat. When Chavarria was being honored as the CFDA's Menswear Designer of the Year in 2023, he arrived with Tokischa and Rauw Alejandro, all wearing complementary outfits that featured oversize silk gardenias. This year, the Dominican rapper supported her friend by walking the runway in a retro bouffant and black funeral dress. 'Your first Paris show was a powerful celebration of our culture, our roots, and the beauty of BLACK & LATINx Queer community,' she wrote on Instagram. 'Thank you for sharing such a loud and clear message with the world.'

Nostalgia and escapism: Highlights from Paris Couture Week

A model presents a creation for Germanier during the Women's Haute-Couture Spring/Summer 2025 Fashion Week, in Paris on Thursday (AFP photo) PARIS — Nostalgia-tinged evening wear, fantasy-fuelled escapism and messages about world peace featured during a packed Paris Couture Week that also saw new changes on fashion's artistic director merry-go-round. Twenty-nine houses showed off collections during Couture Week, which wrapped up on Thursday, following Men's Fashion Week last week. 'Past centuries' Dior chief designer Maria Grazia Chiuri said her Spring-Summer 2025 collection was inspired by 'the creativity of past centuries', making the Italian one of several artistic directors who was looking back for inspiration. Retro draped skirts or short crinolines, as well as trapeze dresses and coats inspired by Yves Saint Laurent's designs in the 1950s for the venerable Parisian brand, were highlights of a show watched by a star-studded audience at the Rodin Museum. Daniel Roseberry, chief designer at Parisian house Schiaparelli, sent out models including Kendall Jenner in a range featuring corsets prominently, saying he had been inspired by ribbons he discovered from the 1920s and 30s. In his notes accompanying the show he said he 'wanted to travel through time, to create silhouettes that might conjure up the haute couture of the past'. Escapism For many fans of haute couture, it serves as pure escapism, a celebration of beauty, creativity and craftsmanship. But just like everyone else, designers have the rapidly shifting and unpredictable nature of our world on their minds. Zuhair Murad, who has been working with his homeland Lebanon under Israeli bombardment, said his collection was inspired by the idea of a tropical island that would be a refuge from the harsh realities of life. 'The message of this collection is about escaping from our hectic world. I imagined this beautiful island, far from the cities, far from technology, far from the world that we live in right now, a peaceful world,' he told AFP. 'Out of the bubble' But as conflicts rage from Ukraine to Congo and Sudan, French designer Franck Sorbier tackled war and peace directly in a theatrical show that combined music, singing and dance. Titled 'Symphonie Barbare' ('Barbaric Symphony'), it featured bare-chested 'barbarian' men and female 'warriors of peace' dressed in trapeze gowns adorned with tassels or sequins. It ended with a 'peace' phase and concluded with Sorbier appearing in a black anorak bearing the words 'peace and love'. 'The idea is not to get stuck in a bubble of haute couture,' he told AFP afterward. 'Even though we do haute couture, we can still talk about the news and worrying issues, without sounding like we're lecturing people.' Eccentric Dutch duo Viktor & Rolf riffed on technology and the advent of our worrisome AI-powered era by sending out 24 variations of the same outfit, announced each time with the same slightly robotic voice. 'It is a collection of 24 variations of the same dress, taken to the extreme. It is somewhat a human interpretation of the unlimited possibilities of artificial intelligence,' Rolf Snoeren told. Change at the top Amid the ruffles and glitter, the game of musical chairs among top fashion houses continued this week. British designer Stella McCartney announced Monday her departure from the LVMH group, while Belgian designer Glenn Martens was appointed artistic director Wednesday at Maison Margiela to succeed John Galliano. Meanwhile, rumours continue to swirl about Grazia Chiuri at Dior, with speculation she is set to cede her place to British designer Jonathan Anderson from Loewe, which is also owned by LVMH. Chanel is currently in flux, with its latest show crafted by the brand's creative studio following the sudden departure of artistic director Virginie Viard in June. Her successor, Matthieu Blazy — who made his mark at Italian leather goods specialist Bottega Veneta — was appointed in December but is not expected to present a collection before September. One of the traditions of Haute Couture Week is that each fashion house closes its show with a bridal look. This season, several designers from Chanel to Giambattista Valli sent out white dresses that were short at the front and long at the back. Jean Paul Gaultier's collection featured a full-length feathered gown that was highly transparent, also leaving the legs prominently visible.

Soo Joo Park Celebrates Her New Single at Kenzo

Model Soo Joo Park celebrated the release of 'Take It Off,' her new single that dropped Friday morning, by attending the Kenzo show that night. A friend told her they had heard it on the radio earlier in the day. More from WWD EXCLUSIVE: Aesop President Talks New Perfume, Fragrance Category Nathalie Gerschtein Departs L'Oréal Kiton and Triennale Team Again on Education Showcase During Paris Men's Fashion Week 'So, I feel pretty good. I'd written it such a long time ago, and I've been waiting for the right time, and it was in a little bit of a holding pattern, so I'm just really happy to share it with the world and have it out,' she said. It's the first single from her upcoming album 'No Ghost,' which has been in the works for the last two-and-a-half years. The album will have five tracks and stick close to what has become her dreamy signature sound. It will be out Feb. 14. 'It's written and inspired by my experience and a little bit of fashion references,' she said. Park has also tried her hand at acting in the series 'Sense8,' and is a regular at Cannes through her L'Oréal ambassadorship, but she doesn't know if any more screen roles are in the cards. Though it was a menswear show, Park gave a little preview of what is to come by wearing pieces that will be shown for the women's collection in March. The model sported a pair of fuzzy pink briefs with a cropped polo top and a long black coat. Rapper NLE Choppa just released the single 'Dare U' with Imagine Dragons, and credited the collaboration to 'a lot of prayer.' 'I feel like I put God first and when you put him first a lot of things just fall into your lap sometimes when you're working hard, so it's a blessing,' he said. 'I'm blessed. I'm so grateful to be here. It's a beautiful setup. Out of every show I've been to I think this is the most beautiful establishment,' he said, sweeping his arms across the expanse of the Palais Chaillot and its stunning view of the Eiffel Tower. The show's ending was coordinated to coincide with a minute of dazzling sparkle, proving that the Eiffel Tower was the real star of the show. – With contributions from Alex Badia Launch Gallery: Celebrities Front Row at Kenzo Men's Fall 2025 Ready-to-Wear Show Best of WWD Lauren Sanchez's Inaugural Outfit, Natalie Portman in Versace & More Peekaboo Bra Layering Trends [PHOTOS] Melania Trump's Wedding Planner Describes the Party and Guests — 20 Years Later History of Mar-a-Lago: How It Transformed From Post Cereals Heiress' Estate to Donald Trump's Members-only Club

Equinox Taps Charlotte Wales for Campaign and Kenny Scharf for L.A. Fires Relief Effort

Equinox has unveiled its new advertising campaign, and has cued up the artist Kenny Scharf for a project to help support relief efforts for victims of the L.A. wildfires. The high-end health, fitness and wellness operation's new campaign is a fresh take on its 'Commit to Something' mantra that was debuted about a decade ago with a Steven Klein shoot. This time Equinox tapped British fashion photographer Charlotte Wales, whose portfolio includes work for Chanel, Hermès, Bottega Veneta, Chloé, Pop magazine and others. The Equinox images include one set in a living room, where a bare-chested, well-chiseled man in a pair of jeans is doing a one-handed side plank with one arm raised above, holding a baby upright. Reginald Van Nurden, executive creative director at Equinox, said of Wales, 'She had that perfect tone. We were really going for this early mid-2000s Steven Meisel W magazine kind of feel to it. It's really cheeky. It's got tongue-in-cheek feel to it, but with a bit of swagger, which is distinctly Equinox.' More from WWD Abadia Continues Global Expansion With Debut Pre-Fall Collection Anest Collective Faces Out to Europe, With a Little Help From 10 Corso Como Kiton and Triennale Team Again on Education Showcase During Paris Men's Fashion Week The shoot was done in Barcelona to relay more of a universal look, according to Van Nurden, who joined Equinox nine months ago after working for Annex88, a social and cultural agency, where he specialized in fashion and music for accounts like Louis Vuitton. Additional Wales-shot vignettes will coincide with different Equinox launches this year. One features a model standing beside an AI version of themselves. Each of the eight stories is tied to a different subculture and concept 'to tell a deeper piece of the Equinox heritage,' Van Nurden said. 'There is one vignette that speaks to the rise of OnlyFans and content creators that is really cool and sexy,' he said. Image is 'incredibly important' to Equinox, Van Nurden said. 'We exist in a crowded space, but we really stand out as 'a category as one,' as we like to say internally. Equinox has always had a DNA in fashion and culture so I don't think of us always as sort of a gym brand,' he added. To help support relief efforts following the Los Angeles wildfires, Equinox has recruited the artist Kenny Scharf to collaborate on a T-shirt. The front of the shirt is imprinted with his colorful work and all of the proceeds from the $45 item will benefit the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation. The featured artwork is 'Blobz,' an oil-on-canvas creation from 2000 that is a tribute to unity and resilience. Scharf, who has been on the art scene since the 1980s, has work at the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Broad Institute and other cultural institutions. Shai Baitel, Equinox artistic adviser and director of the Modern Art Museum in Shanghai, lined up Scharf for the project. The pair are also working on a museum retrospective of the artist's work. Van Nurden said, 'Kenny just made a lot of sense, as a born and raised Los Angeles artist. The piece itself is a reflection of the community, which stands for unity and resilience. That sort of futuristic promise that is embedded in Kenny's work is amazing.' Shoppers at Equinox's site can also make donations to the LAFD's Foundation via a link to the latter's site. Separately from the Scharf initiative, Equinox is planning to have group fitness rally classes, where participants will make donations to join the class and those donations will also benefit the LAFD's Foundation. Equinox had to close its newly opened Pacific Palisades club, due to the wildfires in the Los Angeles area.
