To stop misuse, names of castes to be changed: Telangana Commission for Backward Classes

HYDERABAD: Ending centuries of agony, the Telangana Commission for Backward Classes has decided to change the names of the castes Dommara, Pichaguntla, Tammali, Budabukkala and Veeramushti as these names were being misused as slurs. A meeting of the panel, chaired by its chairman G Niranjan, was held here on Monday. After a lengthy discussion, the Commission approved a detailed report with specific recommendations in the case of these castes, which are often used as slurs and abuse. The people belonging to these castes have been persistently requesting that the names of their castes be changed. The Commission also noted that people belonging to Kummara, Rajaka, and Mera castes have sought to add synonyms to their names. The Commission will submit the report to the government in this regard. The panel also decided to hold public hearings on requests for the re-inclusion of 26 castes that were omitted while adopting the list of backward classes for Telangana in 2014 after the formation of the state and to receive representations and objections in this regard. For this purpose, it has decided to issue a notification on May 15.

Cakes, sarees, and a cricket tifo: Kolkata's tributes to Operation Sindoor

The S-400 defense system, fighter jets, and 'Operation Sindoor' on the western frontier against Pakistan have found prideful representation in an unexpected place: cakes, baked at a local bakery at Kolkata's Entally Market, for the Indian Army. Taste & Bite, a bakery in the area, has created two cakes: one features the Sudarshan missile, with the words 'Proud to be an Indian' written on it, while the second cake honors Operation Sindoor, complete with edible missile replicas. Speaking to The Indian Express, Sourav Saha, the owner of Taste & Bite, said, 'These two cakes are a tribute to our armed forces for keeping us safe and protected, especially after the Pahalgam terrorist attack. These cakes are not for sale; we want to give them to the Army as a token of gratitude for their sacrifices.' Each cake took two days to make and weighs about five kilograms. Currently displayed in the bakery, the cakes have garnered much attention, with many customers posing for selfies with the creations. Meanwhile, a saree boutique in SS Hogg Market, better known as New Market, has created a unique saree to honor Operation Sindoor. This limited-edition saree, which is not for sale, features motifs of iconic Indian symbols such as the Red Fort, the Taj Mahal, elephants, auto rickshaws, the sitar, the peacock, and the Ashoka Pillar. The phrase 'Mera Bharat Mahan' is written in 21 languages across the saree, with additional stickers of 'Operation Sindoor' and sindoor pots to further express gratitude for the army's success. Shop owner Navin Israni told The Indian Express, 'We just wanted to thank the army for their dedication and sacrifices. We made around 50 sarees, and they are not for sale; they will remain on display permanently.' The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) also showed solidarity with the Indian Army on Monday by unveiling a colorful tifo at Eden Gardens that read, 'In strength, solidarity, and gratitude, we are grateful, we are proud, we salute our heroes.'

Spanish car-part supplier Gestamp eyes added China capacity as peers back off

Gestamp, one of the world's top manufacturers of metal parts for cars, is pursuing acquisition opportunities in China's automotive sector, where an excess of capacity threatens unprofitable assemblers and supply-chain vendors. Advertisement The Spanish company, which supplies chassis and body products for clients like Volkswagen and Ford, is bucking the trend among international automotive firms that are disposing of their facilities in the world's largest vehicle market amid fierce competition. 'Not every company in China's automotive industry is profitable today, so we think that in the future, there may be some consolidations,' Francisco Jose Riberas Mera, executive chairman of Gestamp, told the Post at the Shanghai Auto Show . 'We could be a very active player. We are open to any kind of cooperation here.' The manufacturer, which has 13 plants and two research and development (R&D) centres in mainland China, is designing and developing technologies that prioritise safety and low weight as the local car market moves rapidly towards electric vehicles (EVs) , he added. Mera's stance represents a rare strategy among foreign carmakers and component suppliers, as they lose ground to home-grown rivals while falling victim to a brutal price war Advertisement 'We want to invest more, grow more, and also develop more strong relationships with Chinese car assemblers,' Mera said. 'We want not only to be their partners here in China, but also their partners when they open plants abroad.'
