Man struck and killed by big rig on Merced County Highway identified
The Merced County Sheriff Coroner's Office has identified a man struck and killed by a semi-truck in Merced County earlier this month as 24-year-old Spencer Marrujo of Inglewood. Authorities said California Highway Patrol Officers responded to the crash involving UPS semi-truck and a pickup truck on northbound Highway 99 just south of Atwater Boulevard at 10:20 p.m. on May 6. The arriving officers found a Marrujo deceased in the roadway and a woman who had major injuries. The CHP said a truck bed camper detached from the 1979 Chevrolet Silverado Marrujo was driving north on Highway 99. The camper fell into the right lane of the highway and the CHP said it appeared Marrujo stopped the vehicle in the right lane and got out to try and move the camper to the shoulder of the road. Both Marrujo and the camper were struck by a 2023 Kenworth big rig driven by a 38-year-old Visalia man who was driving in the right northbound lane. Authorities said the big rig then struck the Chevrolet, pushing the truck into the left lane of the highway. The CHP said the 28-year-old Coarsegold woman found lying in the roadway, was flown to a Modesto hospital and remains in stable condition. The driver of the big rig was transported to a local hospital for treatment of moderate injuries. The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Investigating Officer Nicholas Thornton at 209-356-6600.

Merced County man turns himself in for Turlock shooting
TURLOCK — A Merced County man turned himself in for a shooting that happened earlier this week in Turlock, police said Thursday. Delhi resident Eric Martinez, 25, is accused of trying to force his way into a home on Angelus Street on the morning of May 6, the Turlock Police Department said. Multiple people were inside the residence, including a woman who knew Martinez. As officers were heading to the home upon receiving the initial report of Martinez trying to enter the residence, Turlock police said multiple calls were made to dispatchers reporting that shots had been fired. Officers arrived to find the woman had been shot in the abdomen. She was taken to an area hospital and is expected to recover. A vehicle believed to be connected to the Angelus Street incident was spotted by officers around the same time. Turlock police said the officers attempted to pursue it but eventually lost sight of it. Investigators were able to identify the suspect as Martinez through various witness accounts. Turlock detectives and SWAT obtained a search warrant for Martinez's residence and located evidence they said connected him to the Angelus Street shooting. Martinez turned himself in to authorities at the Turlock Public Safety Center late Thursday morning and was later booked into the Stanislaus County Jail. He faces two counts of attempted murder, one count of child endangerment, one count of evading police and weapons charges, police said. The second attempted murder charge is due to there being more than one person in the home at the time of the shooting.

CHP investigating fatal Highway 99 crash near Atwater involving semi-truck
Authorities are investigating after one person was killed and another injured in a crash on a Merced County highway. Merced area Highway Patrol officers responded to the area of northbound Highway 99 just south of Atwater Boulevard at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, for a report of a crash involving a UPS semi-truck and a pickup truck with a bed camper. When officers arrived on scene, they located a deceased man lying in the roadway and a woman who was suffering from major injuries. The CHP said emergency personnel rendered aid to the injured woman who was flown to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto for treatment. She was listed in stable condition. Authorities said a truck bed camper detached from a 1979 Chevrolet Silverado that was traveling north on Highway 99, driven by a man who the CHP believes to be a 27-year-old from Riverside, and fell into the right lane of the highway. The CHP said it appears the man stopped the vehicle in the right lane, then got out to try and move the camper to the shoulder of the road. The man and the camper were then struck by a 2023 Kenworth big rig driven by Jessey Nothstein, 38, of Visalia, that was traveling in the right northbound lane at about 55 mph. The CHP said it appears that when Nothstein saw the man and camper in the roadway, he swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid a collision. The big rig then collided with the Chevrolet, pushing it into the left northbound lane of the highway. The 28-year-old Coarsegold woman was found lying in the number two lane of the highway with major injuries and the CHP said it is unknown where she was located at the time of the crash. Nothstein was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Merced for treatment of moderate injuries. CHP Officer Eric Zuniga described the crash scene as chaotic and said authorities are continuing to investigate. Authorities said neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be factor in the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact Investigating Officer Nicholas Thornton at 209-356-6600.
