Mercedes Electric Semi Truck Delivers Backwards Load To Break New World Record
This week Mercedes-Benz Trucks set a new record for driving a load over the road entirely in reverse, as well as a closed course record for continuous reversing. The driver, Marco Hellgrewe, described as a German Armed Forces officer and "truck enthusiast" was picked to reverse the brand new all-electric Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 to set the records, and absolutely delivered. The day began at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben where Marco pushed the truck in reverse for a new record of 124.7 kilometers without stopping. Once that record had been achieved, Marco drove out onto the public streets, still in reverse, and drove over 30 kilometers from Oschersleben to the new Daimler Truck Global Parts Center in Halberstadt. The key to breaking a new record in reversing a tractor trailer is taking your time and having a police escort. The 30 kilometer drive in reverse took around two hours to complete, meaning the truck was travelling at just under 10 miles per hour for the entirety of the journey. "For me, a big dream has come true: to drive a long distance in reverse on public roads with an all-electric truck and semitrailer. And even being able to do it with the electric flagship eActros 600 from Mercedes-Benz Trucks – which has now become my second home, so to speak," says Hellgrewe. Back in 2018 Audi and ABT Schaeffler built an electric RS3 that went 130 miles per hour in reverse, which was absolutely trounced by the Rimac Nevera in 2023 setting a reverse top speed of 171.34 miles per hour. The prior tractor trailer reverse distance record was set by an Irish farmer in 2017, running almost 21 kilometers backing up. Mercedes-Benz Trucks worked with the mayor of Halberstadt for this project with both parties seeking attention for road safety, electrification, and "truck driver image." Truck drivers are essential to the mechanics of everyday life, bringing the things we need to live from wherever they're made to wherever we are. The job is a tough one with long hours and challenging working conditions, and truckers are vital to any functional economy. The talent that it takes to drive a big rig in the tight confines of any European city must be commended, but to do the whole thing in reverse must be on a completely different level. Daimler Truck, DHL and hylane partner for electric truck deal
Daimler Truck has partnered with DHL Group and hylane to incorporate fully electric trucks into DHL's fleet. The agreement, signed at the "transport logistic" trade fair in Munich, will see DHL acquire 30 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks through hylane's innovative "Transport as a Service model". Under this model, DHL will not own the vehicles; instead, hylane will charge DHL based on the actual kilometres travelled. This approach aligns with the growing trend of businesses seeking flexible and cost-effective solutions to reduce their carbon footprint. The electric trucks are slated for deployment in the Post & Parcel Germany division, enhancing the efficiency of transport between parcel centres. DHL Group Post & Parcel Germany division chief operations officer Marc Hitschfeld said: 'We are very pleased with the partnership with hylane and Daimler Truck. This solution provides us with the necessary flexibility to significantly expand our transport fleet with a substantial number of fully electric trucks without a long lead time. This underscores our commitment to advancing e-mobility in the transport sector and taking further steps toward zero-emission logistics.' The delivery of the trucks is expected by the end of the second quarter of 2026. For hylane, the acquisition of the 30 eActros 600 trucks represents a strategic extension of its portfolio, which until now has primarily included fuel cell electric trucks. Daimler Truck Germany Mercedes-Benz Trucks & FUSO management board chairman Christian Wilz added: 'With the eActros 600, we are bringing a powerful and highly efficient electric truck to the road, specifically designed for the demands of long-distance transport and which can already be operated economically today. DHL, Daimler Truck, hylane agree electric truck rental deal
BERLIN, June 3 (Reuters) - German logistics provider DHL has signed a partnership deal with Daimler Truck and commercial vehicle rental provider hylane GmbH to rent electric trucks for parcel transport, the companies said on Tuesday. Under the rental agreement, DHL will obtain 30 electric Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks via hylane and pay for kilometers driven, rather than purchasing the vehicles. The trucks are expected to be delivered by the end of the second quarter of 2026, the companies said in a statement. The Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 is a new battery-electric truck targeting the long-distance segment, which is responsible for two-thirds of all CO₂ emissions from heavy road freight transport in Europe, said Daimler Truck.

Telsa rival Daimler Truck wants to know if Elon Musk's Semi EV can actually live up to the hype: ‘We'd love to get our hands on one'
The first Semis are scheduled for manufacturing in Tesla's Nevada factory at the end of this year, after eight years of development and validation. Rival Daimler Truck is waiting to see how the eHGV compares with its critically acclaimed Mercedes-Benz eActros 600. As Tesla inches closer to the start of volume production for its Semi early next year, industry leader Daimler Truck is keen to see whether the model can live up to its hype. First revealed in 2017, the electric heavy goods vehicle (eHGV) came with such demanding specifications at the time that Bill Gates himself doubted back in 2020 that they were even feasible. When it finally hits the market, the Semi will be the model with the longest development and validation time in Tesla's range, after Musk missed his original 2019 launch date. But recently, Tesla has been offering a glimpse into its Nevada factory, indicating confidence that it can move from field testing into what it calls 'first truck builds' by the end of this year. 'We'd love to get our hands on a Tesla Semi, and really test it,' Daimler Truck finance chief Eva Scherer told reporters on Wednesday. 'We haven't been able to, it cannot be ordered yet.' Tesla has enjoyed a first-mover advantage in the EV space for most of its existence. But legacy truck companies, particularly in Europe, have already been quietly selling EVs for several years now. Daimler isn't the only manufacturer with a headstart on Tesla, either. Swedish rival Volvo Trucks said last month that it has already sold over 5,000 zero-emission electric vehicles. But Tesla aims to surpass these volumes, with a Nevada factory designed to manufacture a peak output of 50,000 Semis annually. Depending on whether customers order a standard or long-range version, these vehicles will be capable of driving between 300 and 500 miles, or roughly 500 to 800 kilometers. While Musk plans to use the first Semis built internally before rolling them out to North American customers, project lead Dan Priestley has said a European launch will follow soon thereafter. Due to recent regulatory changes, the Semi will be street legal in Europe and compatible with local trailers, where it will compete with the Mercedes eActros 600 for demand. So, once the Semi launches next year, expect Daimler to stress-test Tesla's claims, such as a 1,700-kilometer drive completed in 24 hours. 'We keep hearing that it's supposed to be next year,' Scherer said. 'And yes, once it's there, we're interested to have a look.' Notably, her company—the largest manufacturer of HGVs in the world with brands like Freightliner—had cast considerable doubt on Musk's ambitious plans just last year. Daimler Truck is also waiting with a competitor of its own. In September, the group won the International Truck of the Year award with its Mercedes-Benz eActros 600, the German brand's first model designed specifically for long-distance hauling, with a range of 500 kilometers (311 miles). Early this year, Daimler Truck followed that up with the largest order for EV trucks Amazon has ever placed, with a commitment to purchase more than 200 units of the eActros 600 (the number designates its battery capacity in kilowatt-hours) over the course of this year. Since diesels have long been considered the most economical option for long-haul freight transport, eHGVs have mainly earned a spot in last-mile transport. In that segment, the expensive batteries can be smaller but still sufficient in size to last the full day before recharging at the end, once they return to the depot. When Musk took the stage in 2017, he claimed the Semi would be so good at long-haul transport that it would be 'economic suicide' for logistics firms to choose anything else. Even in what Musk claimed was a worst-case scenario, a diesel truck would still be 20% more expensive to operate per mile than his Semi. 'This beats rail,' the entrepreneur said, should they operate in convoy.
