Cash payout, cheaper petrol offer relief amid rising costs

PETALING JAYA: The announcement by the prime minister yesterday received widespread public approval, with many hailing it as timely relief amid ongoing economic pressures. Human Resources executive Afaf Radzuan, 35, said the cash handout for all adults is bound to strike a chord with the people. 'It's definitely a popular move. It's not just targeted at specific groups – everyone aged 18 and above will benefit. Families with many adults are especially lucky. Even though it's just a one-off, it can go a long way in helping with daily essentials.' Afaf added that the expansion of the Jualan Rahmah initiative would help Malaysians cope with rising prices of basic goods. 'The freeze on toll hikes also helps ease financial pressure, especially for those of us who travel long distances for work.' Aminurrashid Idris, 37, an executive based in Shah Alam, was thrilled about the extra public holiday. 'It's another long weekend for Malaysians. It gives us more time to be with our families.' He also welcomed the freeze on toll rates, noting it would benefit the many who commute daily between states for work. 'At least that is one cost which will not go up.' Part-time worker Nur Shahiera Hisham Mudin, 24, said the RM100 aid was meaningful, especially for young families. 'The announcement meant a lot to me. Between my husband, my younger sibling and I, we'll receive RM300. It may not seem much to others, but for us, it makes a real difference.' She said the money would go towards household essentials and items for her eldest child, who is nearly two. Radiographer Abdullah Zawawi Fikri Rozlan, 38, from Terengganu, said the cash handout may be small but would go a long way for struggling families. 'Thanks to PMX (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) for the RM100 assistance – it'll help many buy basic necessities. It's not enough to cover a whole month, of course, but it's a welcome help for those who truly need it.' More than 20 million Malaysians will get the RM100 cash handout in conjunction with Merdeka Day. All citizens aged 18 and above will receive the aid via their MyKad, under the SARA programme. The assistance can be used from Aug 31 to Dec 31 this year at over 4,000 participating stores, including major supermarket chains. Besides the cash handout, Anwar said the government would defer toll hikes scheduled this year across 10 highways. The allocation for the Jualan Rahmah Madani programme will also be doubled – from RM300 million to RM600 million. Anwar added that the government will introduce targeted subsidies for RON95 petrol, with the fuel set to be priced at RM1.99 per litre for Malaysians by the end of September. He also declared that Sept 15 (this year) will be a public holiday in celebration of Malaysia Day.

Latest Fiscal Support Measures Positive For Consumer Sector -- CIMB Securities

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- The latest fiscal support measures announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim are expected to bolster Malaysia's consumer sector by reinforcing near-term spending, particularly on essential goods and value-based retail, said CIMB Securities Sdn Bhd. CIMB Securities, however, is keeping its earnings forecasts unchanged at this juncture, noting that the measures would underpin existing revenue growth assumptions for the stocks under its coverage. 'Within the consumer sector, we continue to advocate focusing on companies benefiting from inelastic demand for daily necessities and those well-positioned to capture consumer downtrading trends by targeting the mass-market segment,' it said. CIMB Securities highlighted that food and beverage (F&B) manufacturers, such as Nestle, F&N, QL Resources, and Farm Fresh, are likely to benefit from stronger demand for basic food and beverage products, many of which are likely to be eligible for purchase using the RM100 credit. It opined that other retailers such as Mr DIY ('Buy' call), Padini (Buy), Aeon (Buy), Yoong Onn (Buy), Bonia (Hold), Berjaya Food and SEM (Reduce) could see improved footfall and higher spending per customer as disposable incomes increase, amplified by the recent 25 basis points overnight policy rate cut to 2.75 per cent. 'As such, we maintain our 'Neutral' call on the sector. We believe valuations are fair at this juncture, reflecting the ongoing soft consumer sentiment and higher sales tax on discretionary goods, the impact of boycott activities on selected consumer names and cost pressures from the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST) on rental costs,' it said. Earlier today, Anwar unveiled a new round of fiscal support measures aimed at alleviating living costs, stimulating domestic consumption, and boosting household spending ahead of the upcoming Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day celebrations. Key measures include a one-off RM100 e-credit via MyKad (SARA scheme), doubling the Rahmah Madani Sales programme budget to RM600 million for 2025, a public holiday on Sept 15, 2025, to encourage domestic travel, a toll rate freeze for 2025 and maintaining RON95 subsidies, with the subsidised price to be reduced from RM2.50 per litre to RM1.99 per litre for all Malaysians. -- BERNAMA

All adult Malaysians to receive RM100 under Sara programme for Merdeka Day, says PM Anwar

July 23, 2025 PETALING JAYA – In celebration of Merdeka Day on Aug 31, all Malaysians aged 18 and above will receive a one-off payment of RM100 through their MyKad under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme, announced Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister stated that this assistance is available for use from Aug 31 until Dec 31, and can be spent on essential goods at over 4,100 stores nationwide. Participating retailers include major supermarkets such as Mydin, Lotus's, Econsave, and 99Speedmart, as well as retail shops in every district across the country. 'The assistance is provided on an individual basis, not by the household. It means, for example, a household consisting of a husband, wife, and two adult children will receive a total of RM400,' Anwar said in announcement on Wednesday (July 23). 'This initiative is set to benefit 22 million Malaysians, with an allocation of RM2bil. 'This means the combined allocation for STR and Sara will increase from RM13bil to RM15bil for 2025 – marking the first time in history that cash assistance is being distributed to all adult citizens,' Anwar added. 'Some among us may have the means and do not need this assistance and the government intends for any unused funds by year-end to be redistributed to vulnerable groups next year,' he said. The Prime Minister also announced that Sept 15 would be a public holiday nationwide for Malaysia Day.
