Holiday tragedy in Mersing: Teenage siblings drown while swimming at Pulau Mentigi beach

MERSING, June 3 — What was meant to be a joyful holiday back in their hometown ended in tragedy when two siblings drowned while swimming at the Pulau Mentigi beach here yesterday afternoon. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Mersing Zone director Maritime Commander Suhaizan Saadin said the deceased were Nur Awatif Udaima Mohd Hisam, 15, and her younger brother Ahmad Uwais Al Qarni, 13. He said the Malaysia Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Johor alerted them at 4.25pm to activate a search and rescue (SAR) operation, after which MMEA's patrol boat Perkasa 44 was deployed to the scene. 'According to the information received, the first victim, Nur Awatif Udaima, was found at the location where she drowned by the local community at 4.30pm. 'The Perkasa 44 boat and the islanders then expanded the search sector, and Ahmad Uwais Al Qarni was found through diving efforts by island residents at 6.30pm,' he said in a statement last night. Suhaizan said it is understood that the victims' family had returned to their village at Pulau Tinggi for the school holidays, and the family had gone to the beach, about 19 nautical miles from the Mersing coastline, for an outing. He added that the bodies were handed over to the Marine Police Force (PPM) and brought back to the Shahbandar Jetty. Meanwhile, Mersing District Police Chief Supt Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani said that the bodies of the siblings were sent to Mersing Hospital for post-mortem. — Bernama

Traffic cop claims trial to bribery charge over accident case in Mersing

JOHOR BARU, May 28 — A traffic policeman pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of accepting a RM1,000 bribe related to an accident case he investigated nearly two years ago. The accused, Wan Shazrul Wan Shamsuddin, 47, claimed trial after the charge was read before Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail. According to the charge sheet, Wan Shazrul, an assistant traffic investigation officer at the Mersing district police headquarters, allegedly accepted RM1,000 from an individual as an inducement to hand over documents related to a road accident. The alleged offence took place at a restaurant in Jalan Ismail, Mersing, at 4pm on December 13, 2023. Wan Shazrul was charged under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years and a fine of five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction. MACC prosecuting officer Ameera D'Aneez Mohd Shukari told the court that the offence is non-bailable but requested bail be set at RM10,000 if deemed appropriate. Defence counsel K. Bharathi appealed for a lower bail amount, citing Wan Shazrul's financial obligations, including supporting his unemployed wife and three children who are still in school. The court granted bail at RM5,000 with conditions that Wan Shazrul reports monthly to the Johor MACC headquarters and surrenders his international passport. Judge Ahmad Kamal Arifin set July 8 for mention and the submission of documents.

King unveils and test-drives interceptor boat of his own design for maritime defence

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 — His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, test-drove a new interceptor boat personally conceptualised by His Majesty, in Mersing, Johor, yesterday. According to a post on His Majesty's official Facebook page, the design and specifications of the boat were the result of Sultan Ibrahim's inspiration and expertise, gained from extensive knowledge in marine science and various military training experiences. 'In March, His Majesty bestowed a high-technology interceptor boat named the Ibrahim Class IC 1170cc to the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN). The boat, specifically designed as a high-speed interceptor vessel, is capable of operating in tropical waters,' the post read. Sultan Ibrahim also presented a high-tech interceptor boat to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Pahang last March. According to the post, in November 2020, His Majesty had also gifted a fully-equipped IMG speedboat with a 900-horsepower engine to the Marine Police Force (PPM) in Region 2, for use in island and maritime operations around Mersing. His Majesty also presented a Tornado Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) to the 21st Special Service Group (21 GGK) in 2021. 'The RM1.2 million boat, equipped with a 600-horsepower engine, was gifted to assist the 21 GGK in carrying out their missions and duties. 'His Majesty's contributions reflect Sultan Ibrahim's concern for the security of national waters and the preparedness of enforcement agencies to counter threats at sea,' the post added. — Bernama

'The driver was unable to avoid them and crashed into one of the animals,' he was reported as saying by Bernama on the 9.20pm incident. 'The front of the couple's vehicle was severely damaged in the collision. However, both of them were unharmed.' Yusof said the elephants, including the one that was hit, were believed to have moved to a nearby forest after the incident. The victims have filed a police report for documentation and insurance claim. 'The authorities are advised to increase monitoring in the area, as the route is frequently used by wildlife, especially at night,' he said.
