Meta Quest 4 ‘Canceled' In Favor Of New Style Of Headset
Meta Quest 3 Meta Meta is has sidelined a direct Meta Quest 4 successor to today's Quest 3, with plans to instead release a lower-weight headset next year. This is according to UploadVR, which says it has corroboration from 'multiple sources.' It's bad news for those who love the Meta Quest series as it is. But it is also probably not as bad as it sounds. The suggestion is Meta has cancelled an existing Meta Quest 4-style project, not that Meta will never make another headset in that style. It means Meta next plans instead to release a headset that keeps its power and computing brains in an external housing, a puck, in order to keep the weight of the headset itself low. Such a style is seen in the Apple Vision Pro and the upcoming Android XR-powered Samsung Project Moohan headset. This upcoming Meta headset is expected to be much lighter and slighter than either of those, though. Earlier reports suggest this concept, codenamed Puffin, will look closer to a beefed-up set of sunglasses than a VR headset. You might look to XReal's Project Aura pair for a hint as to how Meta's upcoming headset might turn out. That pair will use Android XR, and is expected to land in early 2026. The utility of such a deviation from Meta's existing headset designs is clear. It's a wearable much more appealing to use when not at home, compared to a Meta Quest 3. It will run the same HorizonOS software as today's Meta headsets, enabling the use of countless apps, if likely with a narrower field of view. This effectively means the virtual screen created by the Meta Puffin will appear smaller. UploadVR suggests the exact display tech for this headset has not yet been picked. Again, XReal's products can be taken as an indicator as to what is already possible. Its Air One glasses have a 1080p microOLED display that, according to the marketing blurb, can create the impression of a 147-inch screen sat in front of you. While Meta has not revealed any timeline for its upcoming releases, this latest report suggests the low-weight headset will be released next year, ahead of a more conventional Meta Quest 4-style VR headset in 2027. This will represent a filling-out of what will eventually become a spectrum of smart wearables. At one end there are screen-free smart glasses, just like the Ray-Ban Meta glasses available today. At the other are full-on VR headsets like the Meta Quest 3.

Soon, Meta Quest headset users will see 2D photos in 3D on Instagram feed
Meta is currently testing a feature aimed at presenting content on Instagram in an immersive way on select Quest virtual reality headsets. This feature enables users to view 3D photographs through their Meta Quest virtual reality headsets. As part of the Quest v77 update, the feature utilises artificial intelligence to convert standard 2D images into immersive 3D visuals, thereby increasing user engagement without requiring specialised cameras. Additionally, Meta is testing several other features and capabilities. Here are the details: 3D photo viewing capability on Instagram via AI integration According to Meta, the transformation is facilitated by AI-based view synthesis algorithms, which modify existing photographs on a pixel-by-pixel basis. This allows any image on the Instagram feed to be automatically converted into a format that simulates depth and spatial realism, resulting in a more lifelike viewing experience when observed through a virtual reality headset. Meta emphasised in its blog post that advanced 3D cameras are not necessary for this functionality. The feature is currently in a limited testing phase. The company stated that not all Quest users will immediately have access to 3D photographs on their Instagram feeds, even if they are part of the testing group. A similar feature was introduced by the company in 2018 on Facebook, which utilised dual-lens image data to simulate depth. Therefore, this is not Meta's first endeavour in the field of 3D photo technology. Navigator interface for simplified access to apps and system settings The 3D Instagram feature forms part of the broader v77 update for Meta Quest, which includes several additional enhancements. One key addition is the "Navigator," a newly designed interface that functions as a centralised hub, providing streamlined access to applications, games, system settings, friends, and notifications. The Navigator is activated by pressing the Meta button on the right-hand controller and permits users to pin up to 10 frequently used items for quicker access. Meta stated: 'You can bring up Navigator without breaking your layout or interrupting your flow. Navigator makes it easier to access system-level controls and then quickly return to what you were doing in-headset.' The feature began rolling out last week and is available for Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest 3S, Meta Quest Pro, and Meta Quest 2 headsets. Additional functional enhancements in the Quest v77 update The v77 update includes several other experimental and functional features, as detailed below: Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) audio support: Devices that support Bluetooth LE audio are now compatible with Meta Horizon as part of an experimental rollout. Movable window functionality: This feature allows a persistent window to follow users as they navigate through virtual environments. It is complemented by a newly introduced unified PC application known as Horizon for PC. This application consolidates Meta Quest Link, casting, and remote desktop functionalities into a single, integrated platform. Spatial audio management: Users are now able to manage which applications and interface panels utilise spatial audio. These settings can be adjusted by accessing the Audio section within the Settings menu on the Meta Quest headset.

I exercised with the Meta Quest 3 and FitXR for two weeks — 3 things I learned
Can you get your sweat on with one of the best VR headsets? Workout apps have become very popular with the Meta Quest 3 for people who want to keep in shape, but don't have the space for a treadmill or some other big piece of exercise equipment in their home. Or maybe, they just want to try something different when it's time to exercise. Needing to get my lazy butt moving after a winter of overindulgence, I tried FitXR's app for the Meta Quest 3 for a few weeks to see if it would get me motivated. Here are three things I learned after trying out this VR workout app. If you sign up for an annual contract, FitXR costs $8.99/month ($107.99 total); if you go month-by-month, it's $12.99 per month. FitXR also gives you a 7-day trial to see if you like it. The Meta Quest 3 is our top pick among the best VR headsets. It has a much improved display over the previous version, color passthrough, and responsive controllers. There's a good variety to all of the workouts in the app, from HIIT to boxing to dancing. When you first launch the app, you're asked about your overall fitness level, as well as the sorts of exercises you want to concentrate on. Once in the app, you can search for workouts based on their type, length, and difficulty level. I bounced around a lot, trying different ones. The avatars for the trainers are a little better than Nintendo Wii in terms of graphics, but they did provide plenty of motivation and instruction during each session. Plus, each workout is gamified; you get points for streaks, and there's a leaderboard to see how well you're doing versus others in the class. Most of the workouts involve you hitting glowing balls that come out of you; in some cases, you'll have to perform uppercuts, jabs, or move to one side of the other to hit them, so you get a bit more movement. However, I did try a few dance-style workouts where I had to imitate the movements of the instructor. Without anything to specifically guide where to move my arms and hands, it was more difficult to know if I was doing the exercises correctly, although the controllers would vibrate if I moved in the right way. All of the workouts rely on the movements of the Meta Quest 3's hand controllers in order to provide feedback, so by necessity, most of the exercises concentrate on your upper body. There were a few that required me to squat down to hit a target, or shuffle back and forth a little, but I felt as if my lower body didn't get quite as much exercise as my torso. Maybe some company will come up with foot attachments for a kickboxing workout; until then, I'll keep running outside and doing some of the best lower body exercises. Most of the workouts in FitXR last from 5 to 10 minutes — there are a handful that last 20 minutes or longer — so I would string together two to three workouts, with a brief pause in between each. Depending on the intensity of each workout, I would work up a good sweat. However, I rarely went longer than about 30 minutes in total. By that time, enough perspiration had built up on the Meta Quest 3's liner that it started to feel a bit icky. And, while I wouldn't call the Meta Quest 3 overly heavy, it did start to weigh on me a bit in a way it didn't when I was using it sitting down and playing Microsoft Flight Simulator or some other game. Finding time for workouts can be tricky, and if you don't have one of the best treadmills or exercise bikes, it can also be a challenge if the weather doesn't agree with your plans. FitXR on the Meta Quest does away with those would-be roadblocks to workouts. Because the FitXR workouts are fairly short, it's easy to sneak them in when you have the time — just make sure your headset is charged up. FitXR isn't the end-all, be-all for fitness apps, but for about $100 a year, it's a nice complement to other exercises you may do, and won't cost you much more than one of the best streaming services. At the very least, it's a fun way to use your Meta Quest headset for something other than gaming.
