The cloudy weather on Friday morning turned pleasant and beautiful for the city residents from noon onwards as showers lashed many parts of Chennai. Chennai which is usually gripped by searing heat in the month of May has got a lot of respite this summer due to pleasant weather and intermittent rains. On Friday, while the maximum temperature was 34 degree Celsius, the minimum was 28-29 degree Celsius in Chennai. For the next 24 hours, Chennai and its neighbourhood areas is likely to be cloudy. Some of the places is likely to have thunderstorm and lightning and light to moderate rains. Meteorological department said there is likely to be light to moderate rains over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Saturday as well. There may be heavy rains in isolated places over Nilgiris, Theni, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari and Ghat areas of Coimbatore and Tirunelveli districts. 'The Southwest monsoon has been active and the impact of it is why we witnessing these spells of rains,' an official said. Rains lashed a lot of places in south Tamil Nadu and in a few locations in the north Tamil Nadu, as recorded by the Meteorological department for a 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Friday. Some of the ghat areas in Coimbatore and Tirunelveli witnessed very heavy rains. In isolated places over Nilgiris, Theni and Tenkasi districts too, heavy rains were recorded. Chinnakalar in Coimbatore district had the maximum rainfall of 13 cm and this was followed by Nalumukku in Tirunelveli district, Valparai PTO in Coimbatore district, Oothu in Tirunelveli district which recorded 12 cm of rain over a 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Friday.

As many as 72 houses were damaged in the Khowai district of Tripura Sunday amid heavy rain and thunderstorm, with no reports of any deaths or injury till the latest reports came in. According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), 64 houses were partly damaged, and 8 were severely damaged in the Khowai district. SEOC said an inquiry is underway, and the financial assistance to be provided to the affected persons is in process. Meanwhile, the Meteorological department predicted a partly cloudy sky with the occurrence of light to moderate rain or thundershower in some areas in the next 24 hours. The MeT department has also warned of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty wind speeds of 40-50 kmph at one or two places in the districts. In April, more than 500 houses were damaged, and two people were reportedly injured in heavy gusts of winds, storms, and heavy showers which lashed different parts of Tripura. Last year, 38 people were killed and over 17 lakh residents were affected in the devastating floods as the state also incurred an estimated damage worth Rs. 15,000 crore across different sectors, including road connectivity, power transmission, flood management infrastructure, domestic households and public infrastructure, livestock, agriculture, etc. Over 2 lakh people were shifted to 889 relief camps across the state last year as flood water submerged large tracts of land in all eight districts. The Sepahijala, Gomati, West Tripura, South Tripura, and Khowai districts were the worst affected.

The Meteorological department forecasts severe heat in Rajasthan from May 15-17, possibilities of heatwave

The Meteorological department has predicted thunderstorms in some parts of Bikaner, Udaipur and Kotal divisions on Thursday afternoon and severe heat in many parts of Rajasthan in the coming days. The Met department has predicted that a maximum temperature of 44-45 degrees Celsius would be recorded in Bikaner and Ganganagar districts on May 15-17. There is a possibility of heatwave in some places, a spokesperson said. The maximum temperature in most of the remaining parts of the state is likely to be at 42-44 degrees Celsius, he said. He added that the weather is likely to remain mainly dry in most parts from May 16.
