What to watch on sports' slowest day
There are very few days on the sports calendar when MLB, the NBA, NFL or NHL aren't on in some capacity, but one of those rare instances usually falls on the day after the MLB All-Star Game, and that's once again upon Metro-area sports fans. While sports fans on Wednesday may feel like they have a dearth of options to choose from without Major League Baseball in full swing and the start of the British Open a day away, there's still plenty of action to tune into for those in need of a sports fix. While baseball's biggest stars will be enjoying some downtime, the WNBA's biggest star, Caitlin Clark, will be in Brooklyn for the first time this season as the Fever take on the defending champion Liberty. Clark, however, is a question mark after she re-aggravated a groin injury in Tuesday's win over the Connecticut Sun. The game between the Liberty and the Fever also serves as a chance for Indianapolis to make up some ground on the Liberty, who lead the Eastern Conference. While the NBA regular season is still months away, the potential stars of the future are in action in Las Vegas for the NBA Summer League, with the Nets facing the Magic on Wednesday night. Aliyah Boston talks with Caitlin Clark after she re-injured her groin in the Fever's 85-77 win over the Sun on July 15, 2025. Getty Images For anyone looking for more soccer after the Club World Cup came to an end last weekend, Major League Soccer has a full slate of matches Wednesday, with the Red Bulls facing the Revolution at Sports Illustrated Stadium and New York City FC traveling to Orlando. Soccer GOAT Lionel Messi will also be on the pitch Wednesday when Inter Miami faces FC Cincinnati. And the ESPYs take place Wednesday night, hosted by comedian Shane Gillis. The annual sports-centric awards show includes former Giant Saquon Barkley being nominated for best men's athlete, and Gillis bringing his brand of comedy to the hosting duties. 'Yeah, I'm excited about it,' Gillis said on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' earlier this week about hosting the ESPYs.
