Penn names ex-Iowa coach Fran McCaffery its men's basketball coach

Philadelphia playground legend and Pennsylvania graduate Fran McCaffery has accepted the men's basketball coaching job at his alma mater, the school announced Thursday. McCaffery, 65, has an extensive coaching career and is one of only five head coaches to guide teams to conference tournament titles in four or more different leagues (Big Ten, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Southern Conference, East Coast Conference). In 29 seasons, McCaffery has a 548-384 overall record with NCAA Tournament (6-12 record) stops at Lehigh, UNC Greensboro, Siena and Iowa. Advertisement For the last 15 years, McCaffery coached at Iowa and became the school's all-time leader in wins with a 297-207 overall record and 143-141 against Big Ten competition. Under McCaffery, Iowa was ranked nationally in eight different seasons and advanced to seven NCAA Tournaments but never reached the Sweet 16. McCaffery was fired on March 14 and replaced at Iowa by former Drake coach Ben McCollum. McCaffery grew up in Philadelphia and his parents were ushers at The Palestra, where he and his brother, Jack, would attend Big 5 doubleheaders every Saturday night. McCaffery played for one year at Wake Forest before transferring home for his final three seasons at Penn. He acquired the nickname 'White Magic' because of his playmaking ability and led the Ivy League in assists in his senior season.

March Madness is over for Mount St. Mary's. It was ‘the best few weeks of my life' for a coach's son

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Silas Lind, all of 9 years old, leaned forward and peered over the microphone at a room of reporters. He was ready to make his March Madness statement. The son of Mount St. Mary's coach Donny Lind had just watched his father become choked up with emotion after the Mountaineers' season ended with Friday's loss to Duke. But it wasn't solely about the game; it triggered by a question about how special it had been to have Silas by his side and deeply involved with the 16th-seeded Mountaineers' latest run to the NCAA Tournament. 'These have been the best few weeks of my life,' Silas said with a soft voice, shortly before fighting back tears like his father. 'And I hope we have many, many more of them.' It was a small but touching moment, one coming amid the chaos of March Madness and the cynicism of the changing state of college sports with money-churning TV deals and conference realignment. It was a reminder of just how cool these moments can be, particularly when it comes for the small programs that receive a rare piece of the spotlight in an event that captivates the country every spring. 'It's amazing,' Lind said, his voice quivering with emotion after a long pause. 'You know, this is a hard business for us as fathers, very difficult. So to be able to bring him with me — my wife and my daughter are here, too — it's been a blast. He's enjoyed missing school, playing with his friends on the court, but he can speak to that, I'm sure. 'But to be able to have these guys along for this ride and to be a part of it and just be having so much fun, I've got the best job in the world.' Silas had earned a bit of a viral following with his connection to the program, sitting on the bench during home games or joining the team on the court at practices for the Maryland-based school that won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. That included being featured briefly on a broadcast segment during the Mountaineers' win against American in Wednesday's First Four. He joined his dad, and Mountaineers players Dola Adebayo, Arlandus Keyes and Xavier Lipscomb in climbing the stairs to the dais for the postgame news conference after the 93-49 loss to the Blue Devils. He sat on his father's left knee as Lind made his opening statement, then later took the chair to the left of his father when the players headed back to the locker room. Lind fought to choose the right words as the emotions took over. 'To share it with the people I love the most, with my family and, shoot, those guys in the locker room has been unbelievable,' the coach said. 'Hopefully he'll talk to the fact that he's had a blast over the course of the last couple weeks. You should see him at home games when he's allowed to be on the bench. He's having a lot of fun. That's what our program's about. We try to have as much fun as we can. This is a fun, fun game. It's a blast to get to do this with him.' When he finished sharing his thoughts, Lind looked at his son. It was his turn. 'You're up, bud,' he said warmly. Another March memory made.

No. 1 seed Duke rolls past Mount St. Mary's 93-49 to open NCAAs in Flagg's return from injury

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Tyrese Proctor had 19 points and freshman star Cooper Flagg returned from an ankle injury as No. 1 seed Duke beat Mount St. Mary's 93-49 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday. Flagg had 14 points and seven boards for the Blue Devils (32-3), the East bracket headliner opening a push for a sixth national title roughly a half-hour's drive from its Durham campus. Duke jumped to a 13-2 lead in a dominant first half marked by clean execution on the way to a big lead. The Blue Devils cooled after the break, but finished at 50% shooting with 14 3-pointers to cruise toward a second-round date with Baylor. Proctor went 6 for 8 from deep. The 18-year-old Flagg — a top NBA prospect and unanimous Associated Press first-team All-American — missed the last two games of Duke's run to the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament title after rolling his left ankle in the quarterfinals against Georgia Tech. He looked comfortable in this one, including when he finished an and-1 drive that left him on his back in the opening flurry and later when he cut backdoor to take Patrick Ngongba's feed and dunk it home. Duke led 54-28 by halftime after shooting 60.6% while committing just one turnover. Arlandus Keyes scored 15 points for the 16th-seeded Mountaineers (23-13), the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champs who beat American in Wednesday's First Four. Mount St. Mary's shot 30.2% from the field, including 5 for 27 on 3s. Takeaways Mount St. Mary's: This was the Mountaineers' seventh trip to March Madness, the first six coming as a member of the Northeast Conference. They fell to 0-5 in the first round, all against No. 1 seeds — including one in this building exactly 17 years ago against another nearby ACC school (North Carolina). This was the program's first NCAA trip since the Indianapolis-bubbled 2021 tournament during the COVID-19 pandemic. Duke: The Blue Devils won the ACC outright regular-season and tournament titles for the first time since 2006, though Flagg's health (and an injury to versatile defender Maliq Brown) was the major storyline. This was a good start to the NCAAs for a team that has lost just once since November. Up next Sunday's game against the ninth-seeded Bears marks a reunion with former Duke guard Jeremy Roach, who transferred to Baylor after last season. ___ AP March Madness bracket: and coverage: Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season.
