Map reveals how much you need to earn in each UK region to be considered wealthy

Despite the fact the average UK salary sits at £37,430 per year, you'll need to earn significantly more to be considered rich. In fact, research shows that nine in 10 Brits who take home a six-figure annual wage before tax don't see themselves as well off. And the amount required to be classed as wealthy eclipses £100,000 in most parts of the country. The figures, from HSBC, reveal a wide wealth perception gap, with people underestimating their earnings relative to others by roughly 30 percentage points. Those in the top 4% also tended to identify as the 'squeezed middle',positioning themselves in the top 52% relative to the rest of the population. Overall, an average annual income of £213,000 was judged to be the amount needed for 'wealth', while higher earners put the figure at a whopping £724,000. Perceptions aren't just affected by income level either, as different regionsshared vastly different views on what constitutes well-to-do in 2025. Respondents in the North East of England said £80,000 would make someone affluent; still higher than the nationwide average, but far less than the £367,000 sum from the South East. Londoners thought earnings of £289,000 meant someone could be considered wealthy, a figure which was (perhaps surprisingly) lower than than Scotland's £331,000 and South West England and Gibraltar's £323,000. When it comes to other signifiers of affluence, 51% of the people saidowning a private jet and 48% owning a yacht. However, high earners are likely to consider non-material factors – such as retiring early (48%), frequently travelling abroad (45%) or having investments (54%) – as more relevant symbols. Additionally, a third of 18 to 24-year-olds believe having a strong work-life balance is a strong signifier of wealth – something 41% are aspiring to achieve in the next two years. Vicky Reynal, financial psychotherapist, commented: 'HSBC UK's findings reveal a paradox: despite having high earnings and ambitious financial goals, many mass affluent individuals still don't feel wealthy. More Trending 'This disconnect underscores the psychology behind people's perceptions of wealth. 'Anxieties about rising costs, inadequate savings, and the pressure of social comparison create a sense of scarcity, even when objective wealth exists. 'By redefining wealth beyond the bank balance, focusing on our achievements, reducing unhelpful comparisons, and prioritising financial actions within our control, people can move confidently toward the future they aspire to.' Travellers are 'cheating' expensive fares to save 40% on train tickets

Train tickets can reach dizzying costs in the UK, with travellers going to great lengths to save cash. One Londoner recently went viral when he swapped a £130 train ticket from Manchester to London with £57 flights — going via Reykjavik, in Iceland. So it's no surprise that rail travellers are coming up with inventive ways to keep costs down (and thankfully, not every hack requires your passport). One such hack is utilising split-tickets, which is when you buy tickets for individual segments of a journey, rather than one, straight through ticket — which is often more expensive. There are many instances of how split-ticketing can save you cash across the UK network. Here at Metro, we've already talked you through the so-called Didcot Dodge, which saves money on the journey from Bristol Temple Meads to London. Fuel your wanderlust with our curated newsletter of travel deals, guides and inspiration. Sign up here. Instead of purchasing one direct ticket for £138.70, travellers buy one ticket from the capital to Didcot Parkway (£43), and then a second ticket onwards to Bristol (£43.80), saving £54.90. And now, there's another hack you need on your radar, which we're lovingly calling the Chester Cheat. This one is handy for any commuters who regularly travel between Shrewsbury to Liverpool. If you buy a single ticket from Shrewsbury to Liverpool, it'll set you back £35.40. We checked prices for May 28 at 8.27am, but the standard single is the same cost no matter the time of day. However, if you use the Chester Cheat, you would buy a ticket from Shrewsbury to Chester for £11.40 (on the same 8.27am train), and then a second ticket from Chester to Liverpool (jumping on the 9.31am train) for £9.25. The split-ticket means you'll pay just £20.65, which is £14.75 cheaper than the direct chain, giving travellers a 40% saving. More Trending What's perhaps even more baffling, is that the change at Chester is something you would need to do regardless — even with a direct, more expensive, ticket. Yes, it feels illegal, but it's all completely above board, and there are even website such as TrainSplit or SplitTicketing that can help you work out the cheapest routes. But, make sure you shop around to find the best deal – and if your split ticket involves changing trains, make sure you have enough time to switch. Do you have a story to share? Lidl just launched brand new sweet treats for summer — with prices from 15p

If there's one thing Lidl is known for (aside from the bargain prices), it's the sweet treats. The supermarket's bakery has a cult following online, with shoppers buying 122 of the retailer's All Butter Croissants every single minute. But as well as baked goods, they also have some desserts that are bound to prove popular now that the warm weather has arrived. And the best part? Prices start from just 15p. We're talking, of course, about Lidl's ice cream range, with numerous lollies, ice creams and cones on offer. When it comes to the classics there are Milk Lollies in a pack of eight for £1.19, which works out at just 15p per lolly. Or if you prefer a little more flavour, you can opt for orange or bubblegum lollies, which are a little more expensive at £1.59 for six (26p each). Lidl's also just launched a few brand-new products ahead of summer, including new Soft Scoop Vanilla and Chocolate Waffle Cones, as well as Strawberry and Vanilla and Caramel and Hazelnut flavours for £2.79 a pack (69p each). If that weren't enough, there's new Double Ice Cream Lollies in either Coconut, Caramel or Pink Lemonade options as well (£3.49 for four, 87p per ice cream). And dairy-free shoppers don't have to miss out either, as the retailer is selling assorted sorbets, priced at £3.79 for a 100ml tub. Flavours include Mango, Lemon and Raspberry – yum! With the weather reaching scorching highs, you'll be glad to know that all of these cheap sweets are available to buy in Lidl stores acorss the nation as of right now, while stocks last. This comes after Lidl announced a major UK expansion plan, with £500,000,000 put aside for the creation of new stores, many of which could be in London. Lidl already has more than 120 stores within the M25, but is looking to open hundreds more, with a list of proposed locations being shared in its site requirements brochure for 2025. More Trending In this document, it was revealed that Lidl desires to launch new stores in more than 200 places across London and from Richmond to Chelsea some of the areas on the list are rather unexpected. While these are only potential locations, not confirmed places where supermarkets will be built, it's still interesting to see where the budget retailer is setting its sights, especially when it comes to some of the city's more affluent boroughs. View More » Other target areas include Barnes, Battersea, Chelsea, Chiswick, Greenwich, Ham, Highgate, Kensington High Street, South Kensington, Knightsbridge, Nine Elms, Kew, Paddington, Richmond town centre, Soho, Mayfair, Teddington, Twickenham, Westminster, Waterloo, and Wimbledon.
