Union asks for more rakes, personnel for Purple, Orange Lines
Kolkata: The Pragatisil Sramik Karmachari Union has urged Metro Railway to add rakes and traffic personnel for the Purple and Orange lines, which are set to extend operations now that they are equipped with the advanced signalling system. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On behalf of the INTTUC-affiliated Metro workers' union, general secretary Samir Bera wrote to Metro's chief operations manager. With no fresh recruitment and staff members continuously being transferred out of the North-South (Blue) line, the situation is worse for the truncated Purple (Joka-Majerhat) and Orange (New Garia-Ruby) lines. "The launch of the Yellow Line and the Green Line's last leg is imminent. We welcome the opening of new lines. Unfortunately, the workforce is dragged from the Blue Line, which is already reeling under an acute staff shortage," wrote Bera. Union vice-president Subhasis Sengupta said, "So many extensions but there aren't enough rakes, motormen, or traffic personnel to operate them." In a report titled "Lone rake pulls Purple Line ops, normal services from today", TOI highlighted the rake and manpower personnel issues. Until April, the Purple line offered 18 services at 50-minute intervals. Following the signalling upgrade, 44 services were added from May 9, and the six-hour services doubled. However, a single rake continued to run up and down the 8-km corridor, while another remained on standby.

Water Metro In Mumbai, Other Places Soon? What Head Of Kochi Project Said
New Delhi: The Water Metro in Kochi has been successful and the Centre is now planning to start the ferry transportation system in 21 other places, the project's Managing Director Loknath Behera has said. Speaking exclusively to NDTV on Thursday, Mr Behera said the places where the system is likely to be introduced include Goa, Ahmedabad, Srinagar, Lakshadweep and Guwahati, and a feasibility study in Mumbai has already been completed. Mr Behera, who is the Managing Director of Kochi Water Metro, said the system is cheaper and more sustainable than other means of transportation. "It also causes very little pollution and is much cheaper than Metro rail projects. Kochi Metro has 20 electric boats as of now, and our target is to increase the fleet to 78. Building the boats takes some time and they are being manufactured by the Cochin Shipyard," he said. "The Union Shipping ministry wants to start Water Metro projects, on the lines of the Metro Railway, at 21 places in the country. We have completed the feasibility study in Mumbai and similar studies are being undertaken in the other places, including Goa, Ahmedabad and Guwahati," he added. The Kochi Water Metro began operations in April 2023 and has ferried over 40 lakh people in two years. "Our boats are always full. People are enjoying using them... Launching the service in other places will have its challenges, but that is what the feasibility study is for. The state governments will also have to be involved. You may see Kochi-like Water Metro services in other places in three to four years," he said.

From June 1, Rs 250 fine for crossing ‘yellow' line in Kolkata Metro
A fine of Rs 250 will be imposed on those crossing the 'yellow' safety line on the Kolkata Metro's platforms from June 1, officials said on Monday. 'Unnecessarily crossing the yellow line will be considered a nuisance in the Metro station and will attract a penalty of Rs 250,' the Metro authorities said. The measure is being taken to ensure the safety and security of passengers, it said. 'It has been found that a section of commuters unnecessarily crosses the yellow line when there is no train at the station in spite of repeated requests. In order to curb this tendency, Metro Railway authorities have now decided to launch a special drive against the erring commuters,' it added. Announcements have been made for weeks through public address systems, urging the commuters to stay behind the yellow line. Initiatives like putting up posters and counselling people to refrain from stepping into the yellow line have also been taken, it is learnt. The idea is that a higher penalty will act as a stronger deterrent, officials said. The announcement prompted a mixed reaction from daily commuters. 'Rs 250 is too heavy a fine for taking just one step across the line. What if you just lose your balance or simply don't see it?' asked Anindita Das, a first-year student and a daily commuter. 'If it saves even a life, maybe it will be worth it. People need to understand that a suicide attempt in a metro station also impacts lakhs of other passengers. We all have busy lives and people take the Metro for a hassle-free journey,' said Partha Mondal, a bank employee. — PTI
