Trump says he would back GOP Rep. Meuser for Pennsylvania governor bid
President Trump on Friday offered his support for Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.) if the congressman opts to run for governor in Pennsylvania, which Meuser has said he is considering. Trump quipped during a rally in Pittsburgh that he heard a 'rumor' that Meuser was weighing a gubernatorial bid, which would pit him against Gov. Josh Shapiro (D). 'If that's your decision you've got my support,' Trump said. 'He's been a great congressman,' Trump added. 'And if you run, you have my support. And you'll win. The people are going to get it real fast.' Mueser told The Hill in January he was seriously considering challening Shapiro in the 2026 election. 'I'm considering it,' Meuser told The Hill. 'I mean if I get in it's because I think I can win and that means beating the incumbent, which is Josh Shapiro. So it's no easy task.' Meuser has represented Pennsylvania's 9th Congressional District since 2019. He previously served as the state's secretary of revenue from 2011-15. Shapiro defeated his Republican opponent, state Sen. Doug Mastriano, in 2022 with 56 percent of the vote. While Mastrano was considered a weak general election candidate, Shapiro has continued to maintain his popularity within the state while building a national profile. He is considered a potential presidential candidate for 2028. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

PA Congressman spoke to Schuylkill County business leaders about tariffs
BARNESVILLE, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It's top of mind for many Americans: Tariffs. On Tuesday, Congressman Dan Meuser spoke to business leaders in Schuylkill County about President Trump's tariff policies. As the trade landscape under the Trump administration continues to change, some tariff plans have been paused while others remain in place. Congressman Meuser recognized that while the tariffs have impacted the markets and area industries, he believes that in the end, President Trump's plans will benefit the US. 'The goals with the tariff are to strengthen the American economy but not forsaking our allies in other countries,' Congressman Meuser told 28/22 News. At a forum held by the Schuylkill County Chamber of Commerce, Congressman Meuser spoke to a crowd of business leaders about President Trump's tariff policies as negotiations continue with several United States allies. 'We're now working through trade agreements. And as you've seen, the president has postponed some of the largest tariffs that were initially set to go into effect,' Congressman Meuser explained. Anti-gang efforts in NEPA target youth A 25% tariff imposed by Canada on the US has already hit home at Hydro Extrusions in Schuylkill County, the largest aluminum extrusion plant in the western hemisphere, producing for several markets, including transportation and distribution. '85% of our aluminum is imported from Canada, you know, so we've been subjected to the tariffs basically since earlier this year,' Hydro Extrusions Vice President and General Manager Mike Hammer said. Hammer says that while the company supports the administration's agenda to grow manufacturing, it doesn't align with the strategy. 'So it has driven up our prices and our costs and hurt us in terms of losing business both domestically as well as exports,' Hammer added. As trade talks continue, Congressman Meuser says he remains firm in President Trump's plans. 'The results should be very beneficial and I think will be for the United States,' Congressman Meuser said. Officials at the European Union are currently pushing for a trade deal with the Trump administration to avoid a 50% tariff on imported goods. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Rep. Meuser celebrates President Trump's action to keep U.S. Steel in America
May 24—WILKES-BARRE — U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser said President Donald Trump has reinvigorated American manufacturing by keeping U.S. Steel at home in Pennsylvania. "Today he has truly proven himself to be the Man of Steel," said Rep. Meuser, R-Dallas. "Keeping U.S. Steel here at home protects Pennsylvania jobs, fuels a modern manufacturing revival from Pittsburgh to the Mon Valley, and sends an unmistakable message that Made in the USA is back for good." Rep. Meuser said he knew that once President Trump brought his great business acumen to the table, and saw the opportunity for the country, he would secure the best deal possible. "With 70,000 new jobs on the way and billions of dollars flowing into our communities, Pennsylvania is ready to lead the steel industry once again," Rep. Meuser said. "It's enough to make me become a Steelers fan!" On Friday, Rep, Meuser applauded President Trump for successfully negotiating a record investment and record job creation for Pennsylvania and America's steel industry through a landmark partnership between the United States, U.S. Steel, and Nippon Steel. Rep. Meuser said the agreement will keep U.S. Steel's headquarters in Pittsburgh, generate at least 70,000 family-sustaining American jobs, and inject $14 billion into the U.S. economy — the largest steel-sector commitment in Pennsylvania's history. Rep. Meuser said his tireless efforts included meeting repeatedly with Local 2227 Steelworkers to gather shop‑floor priorities; conducting rigorous oversight and vocal opposition when the Biden Administration attempted to block this historic investment; engaging colleagues across Capitol Hill to build bipartisan momentum; conferring directly with Nippon Steel executives to guarantee America‑First terms; coordinating personally with U.S. Steel President & CEO Dave Burritt to arrange high‑level discussions in Washington; and directly with the White House and President Trump — an America‑First blueprint the "Dealmaker‑in‑Chief" embraced to secure record investment and record jobs for Pennsylvania and the nation. U.S. Rep. French Hill, R-Arkansas, said, "The merger of Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel will greatly benefit many of our steel-producing states like Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan, and my home state of Arkansas. Foreign direct investment is a vote of confidence in our country, and in my view, this deal is an important win for President Trump. I thank my colleague and friend Rep. Dan Meuser for his leadership and commend his longstanding support for this important merger." David B. Burritt, President and CEO, U.S. Steel, said, "Congressman Meuser's support and advocacy over the past year has been invaluable. His leadership on behalf of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is deeply appreciated by the U.S. Steel team." Key highlights of the President's announcement —U.S. Steel headquarters to stay in Pittsburgh — safeguarding legacy jobs and local supply chains. —Strategic partnership with Nippon Steel — combining advanced technology with American innovation. —70,000 new, family-sustaining jobs — the largest single-investment jobs surge in Pennsylvania history. —$14 billion economic impact — majority of spending and hiring to occur over the next 14 months. —Nationwide manufacturing revival — benefits extending from Pennsylvania to Arkansas, Minnesota, and Indiana. —Strengthened national security — President Trump's tariff policies ensure American steel remains the backbone of critical infrastructure and defense production. Rep. Meuser said he will be joining the President's plan to celebrate the milestone at a rally on Friday, May 30, at the U.S. Steel facility in Pittsburgh, calling it "a fitting tribute to the men and women whose skill and determination will forge the next chapter of American leadership." U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pittsburgh, said, "Only Donald Trump could have made this happen and I'm grateful to him for having me, Congressman Mike Kelly (PA-16), and Congressman Dan Meuser (PA-09) from our Pennsylvania delegation in the Oval Office yesterday to discuss it. I told him what I have said all along. My priorities are preserving and expanding jobs and investment in the Mon Valley. This partnership gets it done." Bresnahan, Meuser vote in support of Trump's ‘Big Beautiful Bill'
Two local lawmakers voted in support of President Donald Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill.' U.S. Reps. Rob Bresnahan, R-8, of Dallas Twp., and Dan Meuser, R-9, Jackson Twp., voted to usher the multitrillion-dollar tax breaks package through the House of Representatives early Thursday morning. It passed with a one-vote margin. In a press release issued around 10 a.m., Bresnahan touted the benefits of the legislation. 'This package is a win for working families, small businesses, and anyone tired of Washington stacking the deck against the working-class people of Northeastern Pennsylvania,' Bresnahan said. 'It locks in the Trump tax cuts, delivers real relief to mom-and-pop shops, and ends the Biden-era tax breaks that reward big corporations and send our tax dollars to special interests in China.' Meuser echoed Bresnahan's sentiments in his own press release, issued around 7:30 a.m. 'I believe we were elected to work with President Trump to improve our country — to improve our national security, strengthen our economy, bring fiscal sanity to our budget, deliver accountability, and lead the world toward peace,' Meuser's press release said. 'And frankly, to bring back common sense so people start trusting the government again. That's what this Big Beautiful Bill is about.' Meuser added the legislation is 'designed to fortify our now-secure border, responsibly grow our domestic energy supply, and create more opportunity for all Americans.' 'It gives small businesses the kind of tax environment and certainty they need and deserve — not one where they're slammed by massive tax increases,' Meuser said. 'Passing this bill will increase production so supply better meets demand, thereby reducing inflation. And with lower inflation comes lower interest rates, which leads to greater investment and more American production.' In Bresnahan's press release, the congressman explained that the bill has language than bans taxing tips, overtime pay and auto loan interest. 'It also tells service industry workers, overtime workers, and retirees that we've got their back by not taxing tips and overtime and allowing deduction for American-made auto loan interest,' Bresnahan said. It also makes the 2017 pro-worker tax cuts permanent; doubles the Child Tax Credit; offers added tax relief for seniors; presents $140 billion in investments in technology, construction and front-line personnel regarding the border; directs $12.5 billion toward air traffic control modernization; and includes protections for Medicaid and other social safety net programs, the congressman said. Bresnahan said the bill's Medicaid work requirement exempts individuals under 18 and over 64; pregnant women; parents, guardians or caretakers of a dependent or disabled individual; full-time students; disabled veterans; individuals with physical, intellectual, mental health or developmental disabilities; those who are blind; those with substance use disorders; those who live in households that receive SNAP (food stamp) benefits; those in rehabilitation programs; and inmates in public institutions. At 8:37 a.m., Trump took to his account on Truth Social to enthusiastically emote about the legislation moving on to the Senate, and to rain praise on Republicans who supported the bill: ' 'THE ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL' has PASSED the House of Representatives! This is arguably the most significant piece of Legislation that will ever be signed in the History of our Country! The Bill includes MASSIVE Tax CUTS, No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime, Tax Deductions when you purchase an American Made Vehicle, along with strong Border Security measures, Pay Raises for our ICE and Border Patrol Agents, Funding for the Golden Dome, 'TRUMP Savings Accounts' for newborn babies, and much more!' read his post. Suzan DelBene, chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, issued a statement criticizing the bill and addressing Bresnahan by name. 'Brian Fitzpatrick, Ryan Mackenzie, Rob Bresnahan, Scott Perry, and House Republicans have broken their promise to help the people they were elected to serve,' she said in a press release, claiming the legislation will hurt 'working people' in favor of tax breaks for the ultra wealthy. 'By passing the largest cut to Medicaid in history, Fitzpatrick, Mackenzie, Bresnahan, Perry, and their fellow Republicans are ripping away health care from millions of Americans and levying a de facto hidden tax on working class families,' DelBene's statement said. She also called the cuts 'cruel' and said they'd take food away from millions of children at the dinner table and school cafeteria, as well as cut Medicaid and harm seniors.
