F1 agrees extension with Mexican Grand Prix despite absence of key driver

F1 has agreed a three-year extension with the Mexican Grand Prix, taking the race to at least the 2028 season. Mexico City's previous deal with the sport expired after this year's race in October, with an extension seemingly up in the air given the absence of home hero Sergio Perez from this year's grid. Advertisement But despite that, on Wednesday, F1 announced the contract extension, with a three-year deal taking the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez into a 13th year in the modern era. Perez, who was dropped by Red Bull after a poor 2024 campaign, is also being strongly linked with a 2026 race seat at Cadillac, with the American-owned outfit joining the sport as an 11th team next season. 'We are very excited to announce that the Mexico City Grand Prix will continue to be part of our calendar through the 2028 season,' F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali said in a statement. 'Formula 1 is energy, passion and emotion, and every year the unique atmosphere created by our fans in Mexico City is one of the most incredible and energetic experiences of our championship.' Advertisement The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit has been renovated in recent years, with the famous stadium section in sector three now covered by a roof. Mexico hosted a race on the calendar for two clear periods – 1962-1970 and 1986-1992 – before a 12-year absence. The race returned in 2015 and has been held every year since, apart from 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Four-time F1 world champion Max Verstappen has won the most races in Mexico, finishing on top of the podium on five occasions. This year's Mexico City GP will be held on 24-26 October.

Mexico City GP Set For Three-Year Extension With F1; To Be Hosted Through 2028

Last Updated: The Mexico City GP returned to the F1 calendar after a two-decade absence in 2015. The Mexico City Grand Prix is set to renew its Formula One contract for three more years through 2028. The head of government in Mexico City, Clara Brugada, made the exhilarating announcement during a press conference, unveiling that the highly anticipated three-year extension with F1 is set to be inked imminently. 'Next week, we will be signing the agreement with F1," she said when asked about the future of the race. Brugada's bold declaration has confirmed that negotiations with Formula 1's management have reached a successful conclusion, paving the way for an electrifying future for the Mexico GP. This monumental contract extension follows a series of successful renewals for the beloved Grand Prix, ensuring its continuity under a privately funded model. The Mexico City GP returned to the F1 calendar after a two-decade absence in 2015. Since federal support was withdrawn in 2018, the event has been sustained by local organizers and private stakeholders through a dedicated trust fund, demonstrating unwavering commitment and passion for the sport. The agreement lasted until 2022, although in reality only two races were held because in 2020 F1 did not leave Europe and the Middle East due to the COVID-19 health crisis. Another new three-year contract allowed the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez and F1 to extend the deal until 2025. It had been suggested that the race's future had hinged on Perez's involvement in the championship, given his popularity had been one of the catalysts for the race's reinstatement after 21 years away from the calendar. But evidently, the desire for the race remains without him. The 2025 race is scheduled for Oct. 26 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Spain's Carlos Sainz is the defending champion.
