F1 agrees extension with Mexican Grand Prix despite absence of key driver
F1 has agreed a three-year extension with the Mexican Grand Prix, taking the race to at least the 2028 season.
Mexico City 's previous deal with the sport expired after this year's race in October, with an extension seemingly up in the air given the absence of home hero Sergio Perez from this year's grid.
But despite that, on Wednesday, F1 announced the contract extension, with a three-year deal taking the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez into a 13th year in the modern era.
Perez, who was dropped by Red Bull after a poor 2024 campaign, is also being strongly linked with a 2026 race seat at Cadillac, with the American-owned outfit joining the sport as an 11th team next season.
'We are very excited to announce that the Mexico City Grand Prix will continue to be part of our calendar through the 2028 season,' F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali said in a statement.
'Formula 1 is energy, passion and emotion, and every year the unique atmosphere created by our fans in Mexico City is one of the most incredible and energetic experiences of our championship.'
The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit has been renovated in recent years, with the famous stadium section in sector three now covered by a roof.
Mexico hosted a race on the calendar for two clear periods – 1962-1970 and 1986-1992 – before a 12-year absence.
The race returned in 2015 and has been held every year since, apart from 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Four-time F1 world champion Max Verstappen has won the most races in Mexico, finishing on top of the podium on five occasions.
This year's Mexico City GP will be held on 24-26 October.

"It has actually been very easy [adapting to life in Miami], and we're all happy about it. Our main concern was that the kids might not like it or adjust well, but from day one, they adapted very well." Messi echoed the thoughts of his wife as he spoke about the "amazing" city of Miami and how quickly they were able to become comfortable following a recruitment pitch from Beckham that went on for years. "The school too has helped us get comfortable and get settled in in our day-to-day lives, so it was a lot easier than I thought it would be because our experience of changing from Barcelona to Paris was very complicated and this has been completely different." Having been awarded an OBE award in 2003, Beckham's long list of sporting ventures and charity endeavours will finally see him get his own way and seal his dream of becoming a Sir, as The Sun report he will be awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours list next week. And Beckham's care for the Messi family is just one example of how his attitude in life has finally led to him being rewarded with the knighthood. What critics think of F1 movie as they all say same thing about Brad Pitt
Formula 1 fans aren't sure what to expect from the blockbuster summer movie starring 61-year-old Hollywood star Brad Pitt as a driver alongside Britain's Damson Idris The first reviews are in ahead of the hotly-anticipated release of the new Formula 1 movie later this month. There is a lot of hope that the film, starring Brad Pitt, will further boost the popularity of the sport, particularly in the USA. Pitt stars as Sonny Hayes, an American former F1 driver who is brought out of retirement by the team owner of APXGP, played by Javier Bardem, to race alongside talented young British starlet Joshua Pearce, portrayed by Damson Idris. It is directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer who last teamed up on Top Gun: Maverick. And Lewis Hamilton also served as a producer, providing Hollywood filmmakers with crucial details of what the F1 paddock is really like to help them make the movie as authentic as possible. Filmed largely on location at real-life races, Hamilton also features on screen alongside his fellow F1 drivers up and down the grid. They were all treated to a special screening of the movie at last month's Monaco Grand Prix and spoke positively about it afterwards. The F1 movie is in cinemas at the end of June, but the first reviews are now in from critics who have been given early access. And everyone who has posted online about it so far seems to have been left very impressed by the finished product. The film has received widespread praise from critics, with the main stars in particular getting positive reactions. That's despite concerns over the casting of 61-year-old Pitt in the lead role, given his age. Maude Garrett, from Nerdist, said the film is "so freaking good", adding: "It has all the adrenaline, heart, pacing, story and character that completely fleshes out this movie into excellence. I can only imagine how much more I would love this movie if I was a fan of F1 racing. Maybe I am now?" And Erik Davis, a Rotten Tomatoes contributor, said: "The F1 movie hits the gas and doesn't stop. The races are epic, the sound design, editing, cinematography, performances and music are all top notch. You definitely feel shades of Top Gun: Maverick in that it plays like an old school summer blockbuster. What a ride." For Hamilton, the most important reviews were from his peers as he said: "I really care what the drivers think and I wanted them to think highly of it. I think the great thing is the sound is great, the image is incredible. It's something that's never been done in Formula 1 before, so it's something I'm really proud of."

FIA respond as driver deletes social media after abuse for Monaco GP crash
Formula 2 driver Alex Dunne has deleted social media after the 19-year-old received some "really bad and quite upsetting" abuse after he crashed during the Monaco Grand Prix The FIA have spoken out after a driver was forced to delete social media as a result of the abuse he received following a crash at the Monaco Grand Prix. Formula 2 driver Alex Dunne was sent some "really bad and quite upsetting" messages after he crashed in Monaco, causing an 11 car pile-up. The 19-year-old, who is top of the driver standings, has since revealed that the abuse he received after the incident has prompted him to remove social media from his phone. "I got a lot of stuff after Monaco, normally I'm not someone who reads things and gets annoyed by them," Dunne said. "But, I think an hour after the race, I deleted social media off my phone because I've never received such bad messages in my life. A lot of the stuff I got was really, really bad and quite upsetting to be honest." And the FIA have now released a statement condemning the abuse, which reads: "On behalf of our Teams and Drivers, F1, F1, F3 and the FIA, through their United Against Online Abuse campaign, firmly condemn abuse and harassment of any form. "We'll continue to collectively act upon and report abuse to social media platforms. Whether you are a fan or a part of the motorsport world, we are all driven by passion. At the heart of it all, there are humans. We urge everyone to remain respectful towards the athletes and their teams." Dunne is not the only driver who has been targeted on social media this year, with former Alpine driver Jack Doohan forced to ask online trolls to "stop harassing my family" after a fabricated social media post from his father went viral. "As you can see, the story circulating above is completely false," Doohan said in response to the fake post. "It was fabricated... to portray me and my family in a negative light. "They edited the original content to make it appear as though my father posted it, which is entirely untrue. Please stop harassing my family. I didn't think it would get to this point." FIA president Mohammed ben Sulayem also condemned the abuse of Doohan and his family, stating: "Motorsport is built on competition, passion, and commitment, and ever race drivers take to the track representing these values. "The passion and excitement that we feel for our sport should unite us and never be twisted into abuse or hatred. I stand in full support of Yuki Tsunoda and Franco Colapinto, and I thank them for speaking out against the growing issue of online abuse in motorsport. "No-one should be subjected to threats, hatred, or discrimination. There is no place for abuse or toxicity in our community. Through the united against online abuse campaign, we are taking decisive action - raising awareness, providing support, and driving change. "We are committed to safeguarding the wellbeing of everyone in our sport, and together we can build a safer, more respectful environment for all."
