Former teacher arrested for operating fraudulent Matric school

More than 100 completed matric examination papers were found in the suspect's possession. A Northdale man has been arrested on charges of fraud, forgery and uttering, and theft by false pretences after allegedly operating a bogus finishing school that scammed adult students seeking matric qualifications. The students who fell for the scam were unaware that the school was illegal. According to the Mi7 National Group, the arrest, which took place on Friday, 13 June, was the result of a multi-intelligence-led operation. The operation was reportedly conducted by Pietermaritzburg Police in collaboration with Mi7 Crime Intelligence & Investigations, the uMgungundlovu District Crime Intelligence unit, Mountain Rise Visible Policing, and the KZN Department of Education. A residential room had been transformed into a classroom complete with desks and a whiteboard where lessons were being conducted. 'They found a group of pupils, aged between 23 and 50, writing their matric examinations. Unbeknownst to them, the papers they were writing were fraudulent,' said Mi7 National group director Colin David. The suspect, believed to be a former educator, though this has not been immediately verified, had been charging admission and examination fees to approximately three dozen students who trusted him to provide legitimate matric education services. Matric fraud evidence seized During the search of the premises, investigators uncovered extensive evidence of the fraudulent operation. 'In his possession, the team found more than 100 matric exam papers already completed, fraudulent letters of admission containing falsified details and signatures, falsified documents, and a receipt book for payments from pupils – among others,' David revealed. The team also discovered various fraudulent documents and a receipt book documenting payments collected from unsuspecting students who believed they were investing in their legitimate educational advancement. David praised the coordinated effort that led to the successful arrest. 'We commend the extensive effort by all role players which led to the arrest,' he said. Students left in limbo The Citizen's sister paper, The Witness, reported that the scammed learners had been writing their last exam paper, a Business Studies paper. According to information given to The Witness, the police halted the make-shift exam and collected the pupils' exam material as evidence. One student reportedly revealed that their relative was also a former student who received their matric certificate from this school, which led them to assume it was legitimate. Furthermore, the students reportedly stated that they were given Department of Education examination numbers, textbooks, past exam papers, and other study materials. KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Constable Theniswa Ngcobo confirmed that Mountain Rise police have arrested the 45-year-old. 'The suspect will appear before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court soon,' said Ngcobo. READ NEXT: Bela Act guidelines issued, minister accused of 'worthless' delays

KZN former teacher arrested for matric scam

A former teacher has been arrested in Northdale, Pietermaritzburg, for allegedly running a fraudulent school and charging adults admission and examination fees under false pretences. Mi7 National Group director Colin David said the man lured adults into attending his unregistered school by promising them a chance to obtain their matric qualifications. He converted a room in a residential home on Innes Avenue into a classroom, fitting it with desks and a whiteboard. Police and education officials raided the property and found a group of adults writing matric exams. The group, aged between 23 and 50, had no idea the papers were fake. Authorities later confirmed the exam papers were fake and not recognised by any official body. 'The suspect, believed to be a former teacher, had up to three dozen pupils who paid him admission and exam fees,' David said. Police recovered over 100 completed fake exam papers during the raid. They also found forged admission letters with false details and signatures, along with a receipt book showing payments from students. Officials also found other fraudulent documents at the scene. Authorities arrested the man on charges of fraud, forgery, uttering, and theft by false pretences. 'We commend the extensive effort by all role players which led to the arrest,' said David. The KwaZulu-Natal education department, police intelligence from the uMgungundlovu district, and officers from Mountain Rise police station jointly carried out the operation. Miracle in Northdale: Abandoned baby found alive, highlighting the need for compassion

Image: Mi7 National Group KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating a case of child abandonment after a baby boy was found wrapped in a white cloth and abandoned on a pile of dirt in Northdale, Pietermaritzburg, on Sunday night. KZN police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said Mountain Rise police are investigating the incident that occurred in Champa Place, Northdale, on Sunday. 'Reports indicate that a baby boy was found by a passer-by in the bush, and he was wrapped in a white cloth. The child was taken to the hospital for medical assessment,' Magwaza said. The Mi7 National Group's control room received a report concerning a potentially abandoned baby after 9pm on Sunday. While walking through an area, a member of the public heard crying and found a baby wrapped in cloth on a dirt pile. The person sought help from a nearby residence, whose occupants then contacted Mi7. Mi7 armed response officers immediately went to the location and met with the person who reported the incident. 'Upon locating the baby, who was found alive, Mi7 EMS was dispatched to the scene for urgent medical assessment,' Mi7 said. 'Mi7 paramedics arrived within minutes and confirmed the infant was in a stable condition. On-site medical evaluations were conducted to ensure the child's immediate well-being, after which the baby was transported to a local hospital for further care.' Isiaiah 54 Children's Sanctuary director and Open Arms SA founder, Youandi Gilain, said they are relieved the baby was found alive and is receiving medical care. 'We are deeply relieved that the baby abandoned in Champa Place in Northdale was found alive and is now receiving medical care. This could have ended in tragedy, like so many other cases across our country. However, this time, a life was saved. And for that, I am grateful,' Gilain said. She said at Open Arms SA, she works with mothers in crisis daily, especially those facing unplanned or traumatic pregnancies. Many of them feel alone, afraid, and unsure of where to turn. Some are young girls. Some are victims of rape or abuse. Some simply lack the support they need. Their desperation is real, as real as the judgement a lot of mommies face at the hands of those who should support us at clinics, hospitals, and child protection organisations. 'But baby abandonment is never the answer,' Gilain said. 'This heartbreaking reality calls all of us to act, with more urgency, more compassion, and more accessible support systems, where there is no judgement but support offered.' Gilain helps women explore safe alternatives to abandonment. She walks with them through the fear, confusion, and pain, connecting them to clinics, adoption agencies, or simply someone who cares. Open Arms SA is an online helpdesk in Durban. Pregnant individuals who do not know what to do are urged to reach out. Open Arms SA can be reached via Facebook or WhatsApp 084 488 1359 for confidential support. Ethembeni Tribe of Hope managing director Gail Louw said there is a lack of support for women in the society, and many find themselves in a desperate situation when they are abandoned by the baby's father, and sometimes parents reject their daughters who come home pregnant. 'Ethembeni Tribe of Hope operates a pregnancy centre in Mpophomeni, KZN Midlands, providing antenatal classes to prepare women for motherhood and offering counselling,' Louw said. 'Ngizohambe Nawe is our motto, and the women we work with become responsive mothers who cope better with the situations they are in.' Louw added: 'Unfortunately, there are not enough NGOs working in areas focusing on maternal health when a woman feels so vulnerable.' [email protected]

Pietermaritzburg man brutally killed by mob

Graphic content warning: The article below contains graphic details. ——————————————————————————————————————————————— A Pietermaritzburg man was brutally murdered by a mob on Ash Road near Masukwana Street on Friday evening. The man was bludgeoned to death with cement blocks and believed to have then been set on fire. The details leading to his death is under investigation by authorities, The Witness reports. Community members said the man, a Malawian national, was assaulted earlier Friday evening then allegedly dragged to the roadside where he was further assaulted and killed. A resident who lives near where the attack took place, Saleem Moosa, said the man had lived in the area for some time before moving. 'He returned to the area on Thursday. There was an altercation between himself and another man. Residents intervened but that ended tragically. I have no details of what the altercation was about, but the manner in which he was killed was brutal. Our area is not safe and people are getting killed almost every few days. It's drugs, crime, and lack of police visibility that exposes every resident to danger of being attacked,' he said. Mi7 National Group spokesperson Colin David said they responded to the emergency call where they found the man already deceased. Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Sergeant Sifiso Gwala confirmed the incident adding that the matter was under investigation. He said a preliminary report indicates that this was a case of revenge attack. 'The police are still following on information that there is someone still in hospital after he was allegedly attacked by the deceased. At this stage we are following all the leads to get every detail of the matter,' said Gwala. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
