'I'm surprised I was fired from The Apprentice for designing skirts for men'
Mia Collins narrowly missed out on The Apprentice's final five when she was fired alongside Liam Snellin. Collins persuaded the project manager Jordan Dargan to design a crop top and skirt for men in a fashion task. Throughout the process, Collins had consistently performed on the BBC show and taken risks. Here is her story. If you look back years ago, David Beckham wore skirts so I didn't really think we were doing anything that outlandish — if he can do it, why can't we? What I was trying to do is bring Jordan's idea to life and that's why I backed him for project manager because I felt so inspired and emotionally connected with his story. Look — I know I push quite a lot, I'm quite a strong character, I know that, but maybe I should have acknowledged the fact that he was project manager and let him make more decisions. But it was only through good intentions that I pushed and I think there is a positivity I can take away from it. Whether it's the right idea that I have or not, I do think it's good to be able to communicate in a way that brings people on side. The Apprentice line-up included a hair transplant consultant and a pizza company owner. (BBC) Even watching it now, I'm still surprised that I go. Given how I felt about how the process has been and what's been shown. I'm really happy about how my contributions have been shown on TV and that's come with a lot of lovely support. Given how much lovely commentary I've seen about me, I think people probably would be quite surprised. You enter the process thinking you want to win it. For me, I'm a big believer that everything happens for a reason and so maybe it's a good thing that my business plan wasn't scrutinised and I can leave with 10 weeks of good. Obviously I haven't had any commentary on my business plan, so I don't know whether it was good or bad but I'm definitely gutted. I would have loved to have been in the final five. Thank you everyone for all of the 10 weeks of support and just encouragement throughout and I'm sorry I didn't get to be in the final like everyone wanted me to be. So I feel like I've let people down a little bit but I just want everyone to know that I'm so thankful for all of the support, because obviously we get a lot of commentary online and you know we do read all of it, and it's meant the world knowing that I've had people supporting me that don't know me. I do wish I fought my case a little bit harder in the final boardroom because as Anisa [Khan] rightly pointed out, I did take all of the accountability which I still do. I just wish I fought a little bit harder but I can't change that now. Obviously I didn't get my one mistake and I think it was definitely a lack of experience being in the boardroom. It was high risk in a very high pressure situation at a very important stage. So maybe I wish I'd been in the boardroom more, just to know how to handle it, but to look back and know that I never got brought back, it's still good. No matter what way you look at it. I'm still happy with how it all went. I asked Liam [Snellin who has a workwear business brand] what his concept is for the task and he didn't have one. To lead from the front you have to get people on the side. And Jordan put forward a concept that I liked and I could envisage and I could back, as did Anisa. We both agreed that Jordan's concept was really tangible and we liked it. If Liam put forward a concept with the same gravitas of what Jordan did, he very well could have been project manager. I just felt quite strongly that I liked what Jordan was talking about. I love looking after people and feeding people. At the house, knowing I was feeding 18 hungry mouths at the end of the task — that's my love language. I know that people are eating my food and they're enjoying it, especially knowing how long and difficult the days are. It makes my heart warm, knowing that they're all enjoying my food and they're all looked after. There was a time where Jordan had the flu or something and I would continuously make him honey, lemon and ginger; I like looking after people. Since the show, I've actually set up a new business. I'm like the queen of side hustles. So my meal prep business was a side hustle while I worked in cybersecurity sales. I wanted to win the investment because I wanted to set the meal prep business back up again. However, setting up a meal prep business in London requires a lot of capital and maybe for me the future is more being in front of people rather than cooking and not seeing them. Now I've set up a sales coaching business Prep and Perform which essentially the framework of all of the teachings are based around athlete level discipline and a sporting mindset. For me, bodybuilding has a lot of attributes that really help my sales career and I'm now able to understand exactly what it is that makes me good at both. So if I can go into businesses and offer their sales teams and their execs support from, you know, someone who's been there and done it, I'll really enjoy it and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes. Getting a compliment from Lord Sugar about TV selling was the highlight of The Apprentice. I still beam about that episode. It's the thing I've been looking forward to the most since we filmed it and. To now have a sales coaching business with that under my belt. I'm proud that something I am passionate about was recognised by arguably the person whose opinion matters the most in the process. Obviously, Tim [Campbell] and Baronness Karren [Brady] have been super supportive and complimentary throughout it as well but to get the big man to recognise my sales efforts, it was just such a win! Mia Collins told her story to Lily Waddell. The Apprentice continues at 9pm on BBC One on Thursday.
