Flyers legend, Pacers forward Obi Toppin hosts annual basketball camp for local kids
Dayton Flyers legend and Indiana Pacers forward Obi Toppin is hosting a two-day basketball camp at the University of Dayton Rec-Plex. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] The camp, now in its fifth year, focuses on teaching boys and girls from 1st to 8th grade critical basketball skills. He said he has learned lessons to use on and off the court. 'Like good sportsmanship and being kind to your opponent,' Woodard said. Toppin said he considers the Gem City a second home and enjoys coming back. 'My family loves coming here as well, seeing all the familiar faces. It's amazing this, this community, and I'm glad I'm a part of it,' Toppin said. Toppin teaches aspiring young athletes skills like dribbling, shooting, and defending. 'They're going to these camps, working on a game, getting better every single day. That's all they can do. But the most important thing is just having fun with all of it,' he said. For the first time, Toppin's son, Daniel, is participating in the camp. 'I wish I had this when I was a kid. I didn't get to go too many up to too many of these. So for him to be here like I love him, being around all other things, he's having a fun time,' Toppin said. The family said they heard a loud boom and saw a white flash of light. When the husband went to check it out, he saw a tree covering his windows and leaning on the telephone poles near his yard. Shelby County was hit hard by the rain as well. One man said he found two inches of standing water in his basement when he went to check the sump pump. He said he has lived there for 50 years and has never seen this much flooding. 'I had to go down and switch it over to the overflow tile that just comes out into the yard. I got about two inches of water in the basement, which we can manage,' Tom Steinke of Botkins said. Homeowners are still dealing with the cleanup now, and the family in Clark County has a landscaper coming out later this week to help them out. No severe weather is expected tonight as the heavy rainfall Saturday evening stabilized the atmosphere. Dayton unofficially received 0.11' as of 7 p.m. Saturday while other locations in the Miami Valley saw more than a half of an inch of rainfall, most of which fell in a short period of time from non-severe storms. TONIGHT: Partial clearing with a slight chance of showers. Patchy fog possible. Muggy. Low 73. SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Heavy rainfall possible. High 86. SUNDAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy with widely scattered showers. Low 68. Monday will only have isolated showers with rumbles of thunder possible, primarily in the morning, along with milder conditions. Tuesday is the pick-day of the week to be outside with manageable humidity and sunshine. Summertime sweltering heat returns Wednesday and sticks around through the rest of the week. The second winning ticket was sold at Hunter IGA Express located at 4077 State Route 122 W. in Franklin. A Lebanon man won $20,000 playing the VIP Millions scratch-off. UPDATE @ 5:55 p.m. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued until 6:45 p.m. for Darke, Miami, Montgomery, and Preble counties. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued until 6:15 p.m. for Butler and Preble counties in Ohio. Parts of the Miami Valley could be affected by strong to severe weather this weekend. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Storm Center 7's team of meteorologists continues to track dangerous heat and the risks for severe weather over the next 24 hours. We could see numerous scattered showers and thunderstorms before sunset, according to Storm Center 7 Weather Specialist Nick Dunn. 'Isolated instances of flooding are possible as well. Not every storm that pops will turn severe.' The severe threat is expected to diminish by around 10 p.m. tonight. Dunn said there could be a few lingering showers into the overnight, but coverage looks sparse. The chances appear scattered, and not everyone will get rain. The best window for severe storms on Saturday will be from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Storm Center 7's team of meteorologists will continue to track the upcoming storms.
