EXCLUSIVE Aussie rocker spotted in late-night LA hangout with popular singer as collaboration rumours swirl

Aussie rocker Michael Clifford was spotted in a rare sighting this week, hanging out in Los Angeles with a popular singer. On Wednesday, the 5 Seconds of Summer guitarist was snapped spending time with Waterparks frontman Awsten Knight in a rare sighting that's already sending fan theories into overdrive. The pair were seen chatting and laughing on a rooftop carpark in LA during what appeared to be a low-key link-up, dressed in their signature alternative streetwear. The Aussie rocker, 29, was seen in an oversized black hoodie layered over a striped shirt and adorned with silver jewellery, clutching a pink plush toy as he scrolled on his phone. He completed his look with dark jeans and a thick winter beanie covered in star motifs. Meanwhile, Knight, 32, kept things casual with his icy green hair standing out under red sunglasses worn on his head. He wore printed cargo pants and a loose black jumper while toting his own pastel plush character. In one candid moment, the musicians appeared engrossed in conversation while inspecting the plush toy, joined by a mystery brunette who wore an oversized graphic tee with the words: 'You'll never get the same moment twice.' The unexpected meeting comes amid ongoing online buzz around a potential collaboration between the two artists, who have been exchanging flirty banter and cryptic posts on social media for months. Clifford recently uploaded a photo making a heart gesture with his hands - just minutes before Knight posted an eerily similar snap from what fans believe was the same location. The coordinated timing sent stan accounts spiralling. 'MICHAEL X AWSTEN IS REAL,' one fan wrote, while another commented: 'They're about to drop the alt pop banger of the year, I feel it.' Neither artist has officially confirmed whether a musical project is underway, but both have solo endeavours in the pipeline. Michael has been producing behind the scenes and teasing new material, while Knight continues to promote Waterparks' recent releases. 5 Seconds of Summer were formed when the band members were just teenagers, but they are now considered one of Australia's most successful exports. 5SOS were invited to join The Chainsmokers on the road after previously collaborating with them for the hit song, Who Do You Love? The band, which was formed in western Sydney in 2011, won three ARIAs last year, including Best Group, Best Australian Live Act, and Song of the Year for Youngblood. Michael, along with bandmates Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin have been living in Los Angeles since 2013. Clifford, who welcomed baby Lua in October, 2023 with his wife Crystal, revealed on Nova show Smallzy's Surgery last month that having a daughter made him 'way cooler'. 'It's the best thing and the most exhausting, fulfilling, emotionally draining and fulfilling thing at the same time,' he said. When Smallzy pointed out that Michael's daughter is going to be a ' nepo baby ', a term used to describe a child that benefits from their parent's fame, success and money, the rocker replied: 'Damn right'. He went on to say that he wanted Lua to be 'the craziest, best nepo baby on the planet'. 'Anything she wants, anything I can facilitate, she'll have,' he shared. The 5 Seconds of Summer band member and his glamorous partner revealed in July that year that they were expecting a baby girl.

5 Seconds of Summer's Michael Clifford Launches Solo Career With ‘Cool'

Michael Clifford, the lead guitarist of Australian pop-rock outfit 5 Seconds of Summer, has become the latest member of the band to embark on a solo career, with debut single 'Cool' launching his new journey. The track follows in much the same vein as what fans of 5 Seconds of Summer may have expected from a Clifford solo venture, with 'Cool' capturing the polished rock sound he's become associated with and pairing it with more introspective songwriting. 'I've been deliberating on this music long enough, so I can't wait for everybody to hear it— and 'cool' is just the beginning of what's to come. 'I want this project to make people smile,' he added. 'I'm just out here doing a bunch of sidequests. Now that I'm a dad, everything other than that feels like a sidequest!' Released via the pop-punk label Hopeless Records, 'Cool' is a taster of Clifford's forthcoming debut album, SIDEQUEST, which will be detailed at length in the near future. The track was co-written by Clifford alongside his bandmate Calum Hood, and features co-production from acclaimed musicians JT Daly and Andrew Goldstein. It also comes accompanied by a Bobby Hanaford-directed music video. 5 Seconds of Summer first formed in Sydney, Australia in 2011 and released their self-titled debut album in 2014. All five of the band's albums have peaked atop the Australia ARIA charts, while only 2020's Calm and 2022's 5SOS5 prevented the same feat on the Billboard 200, with the records reaching a very respectable peak of No. 2. Members of the six-time ARIA Award-winning group began launching solo careers following the release of Calm, with drummer Ashton Irwin releasing his Superbloom album in 2020, with second album Blood on the Drums arriving in July 2024. Vocalist and rhythm guitarist Luke Hemmings would follow suit in 2021 with his debut album When Facing the Things We Turn Away From, following it up with the Boy EP in April 2024. Currently, bassist Hood is the only member of the group to have not issued solo material, though he has been active in the fields of songwriting, composition, and production.
