Celebs gather at Moco Museum for launch of Robbie Williams' new art project

The art show comes on the back of a prolific time for Williams during which he has released a documentary on Netflix and then partnered with director Michael Gracey for Better Man, a film about his life. Williams is portrayed as a monkey in the feature, which received positive reviews for its originality and unflinching content but, although the soundtrack album went to number one, it did not make a box office profit .

Disney ‘pauses' live-action Tangled remake after Snow White flop

Disney has 'paused' a live-action remake of one of its films after Snow White flopped at the box office following a series of controversies, according to reports. A remake of the 2010 film Tangled had been in active development with Michael Gracey, the director of The Greatest Showman, at the helm. Studio insiders told The Hollywood Reporter that the production has been 'put on pause' amid the disappointing opening of its Snow White film, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. The film suffered one of Disney's least successful box office opening weekends for a live-action remake, grossing only $69 million (£53 million) domestically and $145 million (£111.5 million) worldwide. The remake, which had its production budget inflated to £207 million because of the Hollywood strikes, was less successful than Disney's 2019 Dumbo remake, which was widely considered a flop. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it remains unclear whether Tangled will move forward to a later stage or 'undergo a creative rethink'. Snow White has been engulfed by a string of controversies, from the leading star's outspoken political views to criticism over the use of CGI in depicting the seven dwarves. Zegler, who stars as the titular character, was criticised for calling the film a 'politically correct' remake of the 1937 hit animation. She was also accused by Jonah Platt, the son of the lead producer, of hurting the film at the box office with her political social media posts. These included a pro-Palestine tweet and an anti-Donald Trump post in which she said she hoped the president and his supporters 'never know peace'. Snow White has been widely regarded as a financial flop and currently has dismal rankings on the two largest movie rating platforms, including an IMDb ranking of 1.6 out of 10 and a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 40 per cent. The remake, released in cinemas last month, was meant to be an easy win for the studio after the success of other live action remakes, including 2010's Alice in Wonderland, 2016's The Jungle Book and the following year's Beauty and the Beast, which all took in excess of $1 billion at the box office. Disney has embarked on a live-action feature strategy since these successes, returning to its library of intellectual property and repurposing the old titles. Releases in recent years have included The Little Mermaid, which earned $570 million (£438.2 million), as well as Mufasa: The Lion King, which made the studio $718 million (£552 million) globally. Disney will release a live-action remake of the 2002 animated film Lilo & Stitch in May, and has scheduled a live-action production of Moana for release in July next year.

Disney's Live-Action Tangled Just Hit A Major Setback, And It Sounds Like The New Snow White Might Have Played A Role

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Disney's live-action remakes/re-imaginings have been a key staple of the Mouse House's cinematic output for more than a decade, and that's not ending anytime soon. Following the release of Snow White a few weeks ago, Lilo & Stitch is arriving on the 2025 movies schedule next month, and Moana is slated for July 2026. While that's just the tip of the iceberg of what's in development on this Disney front, we can no longer count Tangled among that lineup. This particular remake has been paused, and it sounds like Snow White might have factored into this decision. This updates comes to us from THR, which has heard from insiders that the live-action version of Tangled, which was announced last December, is no longer in active development. The Greatest Showman's Michael Gracey had been tapped to direct, and Thor: Love and Thunder's Jennifer Kaytin Robinson was writing the script. The article notes that it's unclear if Tangled will move forward in its current form at some point in the future or 'undergo a creative rethink.' Either way, it's worth clarifying that the project has not been permanently shelved. Although no specific reason was provided for why Disney has paused this remake of the 2010 animated movie starring Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, THR does note the decision comes as the Rachel Zegler-led Snow White has been underperforming. The movie has received mixed reviews from critics (although the Rotten Tomatoes audience-produced Popcorn meter is more cheerful), with our own Sarah El-Mahmouh resting on the more positive side by giving it 3.5 out of 5 stars in her Snow White review. Commercially, it's only made a little over $145 million worldwide, and it reportedly cost between $240-270 million to make. Disney+: from $9.99 a month w/ ad-supported planThere's a whole lot of family-friendly entertainment to stream on Disney+, including the studio's extensive library of animated movies like Tangled and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The ad-supported plan starts at $9.99 a month. Go ad-free and pay $15.99 a month or save 16% and pre-pay $159.99 for a Deal Along with these underwhelming numbers, there's also various controversies that surrounded Snow White even before its release, from Rachel Ziegler being cast in the title role to the way the Seven Dwarfs were reimagined as CGI creations. So it's abundantly clear that Snow White will not go down as one of Disney's successes. That's ironic considering how its 1937 predecessor not only catapulted the company to new heights, but made waves across the entire filmmaking industry as the United States' first animated feature film. Again, we don't know with 100% certainty that Snow White is the reason the live-action Tangled was paused, but noted by THR, the former movie 'seemed to test the limits' of Disney live-action remake strategy. Maybe this version of Disney's version of Rapunzel might get a second chance someday, but let's also not discount the possibility that other Disney remakes could also be paused down the line. Perhaps the chances of seeing new takes on Hercules, Robin Hood, The Aristocats and Bambi aren't as strong anymore. If any updates come in on where things stand with the Tangled remake, we'll let you know. For now, stream the original with your Disney+ subscription and catch the new Snow White in theaters.

Disney shelves live-action 'Tangled' following 'Snow White' box office failure signalling shift in animated remake strategy

The live-action remake of Disney's 2010 animated hit Tangled has reportedly been placed on indefinite hold, following the underperformance of the studio's most recent adaptation, Snow White. According to industry sources, Tangled, which was in development with The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey and writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, is no longer moving forward in the immediate future. This strategic pause reflects growing internal concerns at Disney regarding the viability of live-action remakes. The decision follows Snow White's disappointing box office results—grossing only $69 million domestically and $145 million globally—despite being one of the company's most iconic properties. The release was also plagued by online controversy, critical backlash, and a polarising public reception. Tangled was initially announced to strong anticipation, having earned nearly $600 million worldwide during its original run and receiving critical acclaim with an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes as well as an Oscar nomination. Despite successes like The Lion King and Aladdin, recent efforts such as The Little Mermaid and Pete's Dragon have also underperformed financially and critically. Upcoming projects like Lilo & Stitch, set for release in May 2025, and the Moana remake starring Dwayne Johnson, scheduled for 2026, remain on track.
