Disney shelves live-action 'Tangled' following 'Snow White' box office failure signalling shift in animated remake strategy
The live-action remake of Disney's 2010 animated hit Tangled has reportedly been placed on indefinite hold, following the underperformance of the studio's most recent adaptation, Snow White.
According to industry sources, Tangled, which was in development with The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey and writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, is no longer moving forward in the immediate future.
This strategic pause reflects growing internal concerns at Disney regarding the viability of live-action remakes. The decision follows Snow White's disappointing box office results—grossing only $69 million domestically and $145 million globally—despite being one of the company's most iconic properties. The release was also plagued by online controversy, critical backlash, and a polarising public reception.
Tangled was initially announced to strong anticipation, having earned nearly $600 million worldwide during its original run and receiving critical acclaim with an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes as well as an Oscar nomination.
Despite successes like The Lion King and Aladdin, recent efforts such as The Little Mermaid and Pete's Dragon have also underperformed financially and critically.
Upcoming projects like Lilo & Stitch, set for release in May 2025, and the Moana remake starring Dwayne Johnson, scheduled for 2026, remain on track.
