Jason Segel hails Shrinking co-star Michael J. Fox

Michael J. Fox has been a "huge inspiration" for Jason Segel. The 63-year-old actor stars alongside Jason, 45, in the Apple TV series 'Shrinking', and Jason has relished the experience of working with one of his idols. Jason - who starred on 'How I Met Your Mother' from 2005 until 2014 - told People: "I got the chance to tell him that he was a huge inspiration to me while I was in a weirdly similar situation doing 'How I Met Your Mother' and movies at the same time and being tired. "We always would talk about Michael J. Fox and what he was doing with 'Back to the Future' and 'Family Ties' at the same time. He's an idol for sure." Bill Lawrence, the co-creator of 'Shrinking', previously revealed that Michael served as the inspiration for the comedy-drama series. The 56-year-old producer explained that Michael's journey with Parkinson's disease inspired Harrison Ford's on-screen character, who is also battling the neurodegenerative disease. Bill - who previously worked with Michael on 'Spin City' - told People: "It's cool to get to write about things you care about now. And Michael J. Fox is my first mentor. So we wanted to represent it in hopefully an inspiring and not sad or tragic way." Bill has been amazed by how Michael has coped with his health struggles. He shared: "I found the first mentor in my life and career, Michael J. Fox, to be so inspiring with the way he took it in stride and continues to work harder than anybody I know. And we want to kind of carry that spirit if we can into the show." Meanwhile, Michael previously admitted that his meteoric rise "made no sense" to him. The actor - who moved from Canada to the US at the age of 18 - initially struggled to find work in Hollywood, but he ultimately shot to international stardom as Marty McFly in the 'Back to the Future' franchise. He told 'Entertainment Tonight': "I was dumpster diving because I knew the grocery store would throw baked goods out. We'd steal jam and peanut butter from the IHOP or Denny's. It was a tough existence. "But in a relatively short period of time I was famous and I was the biggest movie star in the world ... It was crazy. It made no sense."

Michael J. Fox to guest star on next season of 'Shrinking'

Michael J. Fox is returning to his roots. The five-time Emmy Award winner will guest star in the third season of the Apple TV+ series 'Shrinking.' The streaming service and the actor shared a collaborative Instagram post with the news Thursday. 'Big feelings incoming. Michael J. Fox joins the Shrinking cast as a guest star in season 3,' the caption reads. 'Shrinking Season 2 — Now Streaming.' There are no details on what role Fox will play. In 'Shrinking,' Harrison Ford plays a therapist who, it's disclosed at the end of the first season, has Parkinson's disease, the same disease Fox revealed in 1998 he had. Fox recently partnered with Apple TV+ on the 2023 Emmy-winning documentary 'Still,' which chronicled his life and history with Parkinson's. 'Shrinking' will reunite Fox with co-creator and executive producer Bill Lawrence, who co-created the sitcom 'Spin City,' which Fox starred in before leaving the series and retiring from full-time acting in 2000 to instead focus on his foundation. Fox won his fourth Emmy Award for 'Spin City' after he won three for 'Family Ties.' Fox made many more appearances on the small screen over the years, even winning another Emmy for his guest role on the FX series 'Rescue Me' in 2009. He would earn another five Emmy nominations for his work on the CBS drama 'The Good Wife.' Fox also appeared on 'Designated Survivor,' 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' and 'Boston Legal,' and he starred in his own short-lived series, 'The Michael J. Fox Show.' 'Shrinking' will be Fox's first on-screen TV acting role since he appeared on 'The Good Wife' spinoff, 'The Good Fight,' in 2020. That same year, Fox revealed he planned to retire from acting for a second time. 'The nascent diminishment in my ability to download words and repeat them verbatim is just the latest ripple in the pond,' he wrote in his memoir 'No Time Like the Future.' 'There are reasons for my lapses in memorization — be they age, cognitive issues with the disease, distraction from the constant sensations of Parkinson's, or lack of sensation because of the spine — but I read it as a message, an indicator,' he wrote. 'There is a time for everything, and my time of putting in a twelve-hour workday, and memorizing seven pages of dialogue, is best behind me,' he continued. 'At least for now.' Fox also poked some fun at the challenges acting presented to him, although he didn't necessarily close the door on returning to his trade. 'In fairness to myself and to producers, directors, editors, and poor beleaguered script supervisors, not to mention actors who enjoy a little pace, I enter a second retirement,' he wrote. 'That could change, because everything changes. But if this is the end of my acting career, so be it.'

Michael J Fox making acting comeback

Michael J. Fox is returning to acting. The 'Back to the Future' star stepped back from his career in front of the camera in 2020 amid his struggles with Parkinson's Disease, but will appear in an undisclosed role in the third season of Apple TV+ series 'Shrinking'. Michael's casting marks a reunion with co-creator and executive producer Bill Lawrence, who he previously worked with on 'Spin City'. Bill previously explained 'Shrinking' was in part influenced by Michael and his diagnosis with the incurable condition, which Harrison Ford's character also has in the series. He told People magazine: 'It's cool to get to write about things you care about now, and Michael J. Fox is my first mentor, so we wanted to represent it in hopefully an inspiring and not sad or tragic way. [I was] obsessed with showing the portrait of living [with Parkinson's]. 'I found the first mentor in my life and career, Michael J. Fox, to be so inspiring with the way he took it in stride and continues to work harder than anybody I know. And we want to kind of carry that spirit if we can into the show.' Harrison himself said he takes his role "deadly f****** seriously" and felt a responsibility of showing the reality of life with Parkinson's. He added to People: "There's no intention to make it into a joke, but there are people that absorb these kinds of experiences with grace and courage and a little bit of wisdom. And that is not to say that some people do not. 'It's just to say that this is a person particularly equipped to communicate what it is that it's like, and that is something that I feel that is worth sharing with our audience." Michael teased last year he would consider an acting comeback after working on his documentary 'Still'. He told 'Entertainment Tonight': "If someone offers me a part and I do it and I have a good time, great. I mean, the documentary was a big thrill. "[The documentary] was fun. I never would have set that as a goal. It just happened. I would do acting if something came up that I could put my realities into it, my challenges."

Michael J. Fox Joins ‘Shrinking' Cast 5 Years After Retiring From Acting Amid Parkinson's Battle

Michael J. Fox is pausing his retirement to join the cast of Shrinking season 3. Fox, 63, will guest star on the Apple TV+ series starring Harrison Ford and Jason Segel, according to Deadline. Details of his role are under wraps as season 3 is currently in production. By joining the Emmy-nominated dramedy, Fox will be reunited with creator Bill Lawrence. The pair previously worked together on Spin City from 1996 to 2001. This is Fox's first role since he announced his retirement from acting amid his battle with Parkinson's disease in his 2020 memoir No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality. 'Shrinking' Cocreator Reveals How Michael J. Fox Inspired Show's Portrayal of Parkinson's Disease "There is a time for everything, and my time of putting in a 12-hour workday, and memorizing seven pages of dialogue, is best behind me … I enter a second retirement,' he wrote at the time. 'That could change, because everything changes. But if this is the end of my acting career, so be it." Parkinson's is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by the nerves, per Mayo Clinic. In most patients, symptoms typically start slowly as the first symptom may be a barely noticeable tremor in one hand. Other symptoms include slowed movement, rigid muscles, impaired posture and balance, speech changes and loss of automatic movements. There is no cure for the condition. Before retiring, Fox's last onscreen role was as a guest star on The Good Fight in 2020. However, he did make an appearance in his docuseries, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie, which detailed his struggles with Parkinson's. Despite retiring, Fox teased that he would make an exception if the right role came along. "I would do acting if something came up that I could put my realities into it, my challenges, if I could figure it out," Fox said in an April 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight. Michael J. Fox Through the Years: From 'Family Ties to 'Back to the Future' and Beyond Shrinking is seemingly the perfect fit for Fox as Lawrence, 56, previously revealed that Ford's character, who also suffers from Parkinson's, was inspired by the Back to the Future star. 'It's cool to get to write about things you care about now,' Lawrence said in a December 2024 interview with People. 'And Michael J. Fox is my first mentor. So we wanted to represent it in hopefully an inspiring and not sad or tragic way.' Lawrence teased that the third season would show a 'portrait of living with' the condition.
